Well it's all about token gains. Powerful nets you 15, Popular ultimately nets you 15 (from your Innocents,) and Dark Past nets you 10. Team Kid, Prince Charming, and Font of Wisdom are all ultimately the same as each other, dedicated to one kind of relationship. You only get a significant bonus if you sync this up to your age for the betrayal point. Well, you can theoretically get over ten of one if you dedicate yourself to it, but the bonus is only for betrayal, which only refers to you backstabbing the hero party. The party is limited to five members, so even if you turn the entire party into your harem/mentors/apprentices, the absolute most bonus points you can get from betrayal is 5. On its face, this means that Team Kid, Prince Charming, and Font of Wisdom are all inferior to Dark Past, which is inferior to Popular and Powerful who are equal to each other. However, you can also make the Overlord your lover/mentor/apprentice, for a max gain of 3 more tokens per the relevant event. So a total of 8 for those options. 15 is better than 10 is better than 8, obviously.

Technically Powerful is better for tokens than Popular. Because Popular only lets you get basic tokens, as where Powerful lets you select whatever you want. As far as the number of tokens it may be the same but advanced tokens do let you buy stronger powers.

Personally I take Powerful because I'm pretty satisfied with just one romance and one apprentice, and I don't actually want five of either the Innocents or Villains.

Powerful is just great as a life improvement pick, you don't need to be a minmaxer and choose characters and events only for their points so you could take a specific skill you want. You can actually choose stuff more freely and use the fluid points of powerful to fill in all the holes.

How many factions are best for a thinking man's strategic cyoa, I wonder. Perhaps eight, ten factoring in hazards? Two humans, four aliens, one robot, one questionable multi-culti arrangement, and then the rogue bioweapons and preexisting defense grid. The player could be someone that found a genelocked nanofactory allowing them to make their own industry and minions. Sci-fi, but post-apocalyptic with some contrivances to explain why orbital combat doesn't trivialize it all- former prison planet with an autonomous orbital quarantine, collapsed after a breakdown of FTL travel, now a warzone torn myriad directions. Hmm, yeah, I think that could work.

You don't really need to take it 5 times, Sincere Plea can get you one, the Healer Ood can defect for free, Chryseis also a healer could potentially defect if most of the party does and you were her dedicated protector, the Hero Eve would likely defect if she is your lover or apprentice if the majority of the heroes defect, and the Fighter Haruko would also defect if the majority of the party do. So really if you take Ood, Eve(as apprentice or lover), and Haruko, you can get the entire party with Sincere Plea and taking Rotten Apple one time. If you do that and your Overlord is Yazata, there is an argument to be made that the entire hero party defects, and the world at large doesn't even notice. Except that the old gods might laugh so loud the world notices something weird happened.

One of the biggest issues with the powers bought from the cyoa is that they don't contain enough spells, so you'll have to learn most spells without the cyoa making the learning fated. Skills like swordsmanship, sailing, rhetoric, and politics also cannot be bought.

Depends on if your just making some video gamey battle royal. In that case you just need to make the factions mechanically distinct and focus on a specific playstyle offensive, defensive, mob tactics, industry, etc. Lore is less important if your main focus is gameplay

If your actually making a setting and are mostly focusing on story than better make a few fleshed out factions than a lot of wishy washy ones you need to make them distinct, have at least partially compelling ideology and actually make the factions interconnected and have history whit each other instead of them just existing in isolation.

It's by far the safest because of how you'd play it, it'd revolve around finding at territory to do you work in and ensure that you'll always have the benefits of instant casting that Projection has with far more endurance then they do and outspeed any Incantation user's casting. Hell it doesn't take too much to set up another Territory either, it just is difficult to try and sustain multiple at a time without running into issues. It may be one of the more boring methods but its still one of the best.

I think that's more a side effect of the authors being fanboys in love with the show, rather than the property itself.
