This general encompasses all board game genres - Eurogames, Ameritrash, Ameritreasure, Abstracts, Wargames, and especially the game that one anon is autistic about at this very moment.
TQs:
How much does component quality matter to you when deciding on a purchase?
Do you have any favorite games with abysmal pieces?
Why aren't you pnp'ing that OOP game you really want? If it can't be replicated with cubes and cardstock, was it ever a good game?

I guess Netrunner (if that counts) since the new sets are fan-made and the cards arent printed with the level of QC that officially-supported card games have. set-to-set quality varies, within-set quality varies, etc.

I didn't want to reshill it, hence the quote at the beginning of my post
But yes, I think Civolution is very much excellent. In short, it honestly isn't as interactive as I would prefer either, but it more than compensates with insane replayability and a very, very great balance of longterm planning and tactical improvisation. You CAN do what you want, but it poses the interesting question of how much time are you willing to sacrifice doing it and if just going with the flow of your dice isn't more efficient. Love it.

The biggest L is the COIN game that was supposed to get non-COIN players excited about COIN was a flop for both new players and existing players. There are so many CDG based/asym faction games now (that are better in everyway) that most players have just moved on.

I have a few criteria with component quality
>Is the quality so bad it negatively impacts the gameplay in some fashion (1st and 3rd editions of potion explosion)
>If the quality is bad, would it be a hassle to improve it (Can cards be easily sleeved, cardboard pieces replaced with plastic, wood, or metal, etc)
>Is the quality so bad relative to the price that the box is a scam (go fuck yourselves Splotter)
If the answer to all three is "No", then I won't have a problem. I haven't bought Twilight Imperium 4 yet because I'm not paying $160 for a coffin box and cards of an annoying mini size to sleeve. I want Twilight Struggle but I know I'd have to buy the plastic counter set and a counter tray first, so that $65 game is really more like a $120 one.
That being said, War of the Ring has some pretty shit pieces but I like the game a lot. But you pretty much need the colored figure bases, extra dice, and a third party box insert for the game to even be playable. The playmat helps hugely, too so the text isn't so tiny.

>How much does component quality matter to you when deciding on a purchase?
I can deal with subpar component quality up to the point where the game is going to be damaged through regular play. I generally avoid anything like that unless it can be solved by sleeving, proxying pieces, or whatever.
I recently picked up Port Royal: Big Box on deep discount at my FLGS. The cards starting showing wear after our first game so I ordered sleeves for it. I would've been more annoyed about it if I didn't get the game for so cheap, but it was weird paying more for sleeves than I did the game.
>Do you have any favorite games with abysmal pieces?
I wouldn't call it abysmal (nor is this one of my favorite games), but the lane trays in Battle at Kemble's Cascade suck. I need to find 3D printed alternatives, but the game flew under the radar so I haven't had any luck yet. Maybe I'll commission someone to make some one day.
>Why aren't you pnp'ing that OOP game you really want?
I made a PnP copy of Shadow Hunters which came out pretty good. The only issue was that I printed the board too small, but I made do and had fun with the game. Then recently my awesome wife surprised me with an actual copy of the game for my birthday so I'm passing along my PnP to a friend who is a fan of the game too.
Next I'd like to print the spirits from Spirit Island Promo Pack #2. I already printed the spirits from Promo Pack #1 and I don't want to spend $30 to get them officially in Feather & Flame, but I haven't found scans yet.
Any anons know where I can find them?

You could try throwing ZunTsu into a disassembler to see how it decrypts the files but that's a lot more effort than I'm willing to put in and might be too complicated for you to do yourself.

This map is just 4 DIN A3 sheets slaped together and the first try. Future prints will absolutely be bigger. Probably 3x2 pages. Printing something bigger than A3 is unreasonable expensive.

Necromancers>horselords>Dragonriders>Corsairs>Trolls
Necromancers have a nice alrounder feel to them. Trying to pick off targets early to get zombies is great but they function well even if you don't have the necromancer+cavalry in your hand right away.
Trolls are just lame and boring. The added mobility through mountains is still very costly and turtling as a strategy is just bad unless Chaos Horde is in the game.
>Chaos Horde

>chaos horde
have you seen the rules changes to the faction?
- No longer start the game with 10 VP.
- Do not have the initial 5 build points during setup (but still start with 9 tiles).
- The initial unit must be built in an empty area at the edge of the map (with a few exceptions to cover edge cases, like the map with no land area at the edge, or when all edge areas are occupied).
- Can build units in areas at the edge of the map or in uncontested areas where they already have units (can no longer build units in an area containing any enemy unit).
- Now capture villages like other factions, at the start of their turn.
- Score +2 VP each time they score VP (+2 VP per village captured, +2 VP per battle won).
- Enemy factions score 0 VP when defeating Chaos Horde in a battle (except Corsairs which score 1 VP with their bonus).
they also altered capturing villages in general (amongst some other changes):
- Capturing a village now scores you 2 VP instead of 1 VP.
- You score captured villages immediately rather than at the end of the game.
- Captured villages are returned to their owner's supply, meaning they can construct them again later.

>How much does component quality matter?
A lot. Card construction, token construction, pretty much any aspect that will get handled, shuffled, and jostled routinely should be made so that it can take abuse. There exists work around like sleeves, coin holders, and other after market solutions to address these short comings, however, I have zero issue paying more for a game that doesn't have these problems or AT LEAST has the storage setup for those that will use the after market solutions in mind.
>Do you have any favorite games with abysmal pieces?
Marvel Legendary USED to fit that role but the cards are no longer able to be shuffled so it's a non-functional game now. It was THE game that made me go sleeve Nazi after it died and Too Many Bones was the game that made me realize better components are worth the price because I've played that fucker to death and it still looks basically new. Maybe not as shiny but that's all.
>Why don't you PNP that game?
Other than legendary dying early on in my early collecting days, I've taken steps to protect my games, so I've never really had to use the PNP option for stuff I want and most pure PNP stuff is kinda shit from my experience.

Ark Nova is a 9/10 but there are some massive caveats.
>Teaching games are 4 hr sessions. Once you know the game you'll avoid newbies like the plague
>It doesn't really open up strategy-wise until you have multiple plays
>It can be very easy to miss passive effects from your tableau unless you know the card effects really well
>Some of the asynchronous maps are very unbalanced, Silver Lake and Ice Cream Parlors mog most of the other maps
The new edition having 4x copies of all the maps is a game changer though. The game really shines balance-wise when all players are using the same map. Unlike Terraforming Mars, a vast majority of the cards are playable in every game. I can really only think of 2-3 cards that are outright bad, and even they can have some niche scenarios where you can extract value from them.

Troyes is good but the teach can be a pain in the ass. You'll be explaining the two dice allocation phases multiple times to newbies, and looking up how each activity card works on the reference sheet each round is super aggravating, especially if you have the expansion cards which includes two more reference sheets that you have to juggle. The six round structure is also weird for 4-players since it's not evenly skewed. Some players will bitch about 1st player not being evenly distributed even though going first is often a hindrance to your dice pool.

Ark Nova is a heavy euro, but it's incredibly well designed. I didn't appreciate it my first play, but if you're willing to give it the time it deserves it really opens up. You can play 100 games of it and get a different experiences and strategic lines each game which is not something you can say for most euros.

In a 4 player game, starting 2nd is probably best, but the difference is minor. I have thought about trying out a house rule where turn order depends on something players do, like spending in brass.
I think Troyes is really more of a 3 player game, but it works well at 2 and 4.

I have played over 100 games of it and wouls not say it is well designed. Sure there is a high power ceiling and +500 elo players mostly crush me with a ~20-30 point lead but that doesn't I have to pretend it's well designed. As you say, it sometimes takes, especially with new players, far FAR longer than it has any right to. Opening hands can catapult you forward or stifle your start etc. It is, however, the equivalent of boardgame fast food, there's enough variance to keep it fresh

You can get lucky with opening cards aligning with the conservation projects, but I've found 8 cards is usually enough to form a decent starting hand most of the time and you can have strong starts without having to do a round 1/2 project.
I've never felt the need to do this in an over the table setting, but I have wondered how a draft or london mulligan would work out for your opening hand.

You would be EXTREMELY hard pressed to find one.
Apocrypha has a ton of great stuff going on with it. The characters being regular joes and janes that basically get saddled with acting as some kind of Hunter the Reckoning PCs. Like, actually common people like a frumpy, middle-aged lady who plays scratch off tickets for fun just suddenly has to go rip the head off a demented fey.
The game is very much just a respin of the pathfinder adventure card game, however, all the dice are d6 and you just make a bigger pool through card manipulation making the checks to clear cards far more straight forward. The cards you play might be effective at helping someone or not depending on their physical position IRL (card applies a buff to the player on your right, for example). The halo concept is neat. You take a 9 card storage sheet, like the kind used to store your collection for a TCG in a binder, and slot your character in the center pocket, the 8 card slots around them are your halo that may be good effects, bad effects, or just empty depending on what kind of outcome you got on a given adventure and there is a lot of adventures.
That is all hidden behind one of the worst, if not THE worst, rulebooks ever printed and a shockingly retarded way of explaining every single adventure setup in the book laying out said adventures. It is downright unplayable if you are just going by official documentation, be it written or video. The kicker? It was NEVER fixed, no attempt was ever even made, and the creator doesn't seem to give a shit because his "baby" didn't move a gorillion units. The game is finished, as in all parts planned are released, but you can frequently find it direct from the publisher for next to nothing.
Fantastic game, but I do not blame a single soul that shits on it hard because of how mind rapingly awful the rulebook and scenario book are.
What's in the box /bgg/? The hint this time is that it's a small box game and It doesn't have very good ratings on bgg.

I hated this game, everyone I played with (including Innovation fans) hated it, and other groups that tried it never even got through a couple turns. It's probably the worst game I've played in the last couple years outside of Search for Planet X but even then, I'd play that over AS.
What games have the largest space for players to discover new strategies and new paths to victory? I dislike where games have an obvious, clear path to victory and there is no discovery in subsequent plays.
Agricola would probably fit this bill with the starting cards where you have to play a new way that you did previously and try to discover a new strategy. I'm sure other games do this better. But it does feel like most games just have a clear path or they present different paths to victory but it becomes clear that there is a clear dominant strategy.
Hansa T would probably also fit, Skymines/Mombasa, Ark nova???

Agree - but anyone going into this game thinking this was a game instead of a fun time with a bunch a chaos was misled.
>About Civolution: "..the dice system is hancuffy and painful to interact with.."
Disagree 100% - getting the tokens that let you change your dice is pretty easy and one of the things you try to upgrade first so this is a tard take. There are a lot of other things that make this game boring - how the dice work ain't it.

Regarding Stationfall they seem to think it's too complex - hard to remember each time and hard to teach to new players. They also mention that the whole hidden roles become obvious halfway through the game.
Civolution - I think the big problem they seem to have is that if the game requires you to mitigate the dice each turn to do the actions you want then the luckier player wins as he had to mitigate less. On the other hand, if the game is meant to be played by "riding the dice", going with the dice you get than you lose any strategic value as you just follow the dice.
They don't seem to have played it much so it might just be that you have to navigate between the two options to have an optimal game. But it does seem as a problem if the random dice are really so important for each turn - at least that's the impression you get when a game that is supposed to be heavy on strategy and is run by the luck of the dice rolls. It is not a mechanism that is usually used or even liked in these type of games.
What do you do in this situation
>Get a desirable, hard to get, out of print game new and cheaper than the original retail cost, and a LOT cheaper than the market value
>nothing changes with the tracking number for over a week
>message the seller, ask if I could get packaging
>"oh yeah man, I'll see what I can do and tell you tomorrow"
>radio silence
>message asking if everything's okay, maybe he forgot and needed a notification

Great Western Trail seems to fit this. I have played it 20-30 times and i am still discovering new strategies all the time. There is quite a bit of nuance involved with most decisions in that game and i think it is a lot about adapting to the situation.
Superficially you could think of it as being like "you either go builders, cowboys, or engineers" but actually you will end up doing some sort of hybrid most times and the choices depend on the variable setup, available buildings, the available workers, available station master tiles etc. It feels different each time

Dragons Eclipse. The idea of a game where you collect and tame or raise monsters is something I desperately need in my collection. By DE seems very much like cashgrab sloppa from the hour or so of research I put in. It's also ridiculously overpriced for what it is in my region. Is there anything out there that can give me that kind of , at the very least, raising individual unique individuals/monster, if not collecting them as well.
Is dragons eclipse the only one, is it actually worth the 200 local currency it would cost vs the average 80 dollar high end game i can get. I want to fill this niche but Ive already got dozens of games and dont want to buy just for the sake of it unless im getting that unique pokemon/digimon/monster rancher feeling

I'm not aware of any other expansion but what they seem to add is just more of the same, nothing that changes the core of the game which is poorly disguised resource conversion after resource conversion

How much to invest in mitigation and the tension between mitigating and following a longterm strategy vs using more but less efficient actions the dice give you is precise the tension that makes the game delicious, I would say
Plus there is a LOT of possibilities for mitigation.
Went to a indie game designer meetup to playtest some games and noticed the designers don't really play that many games?
Every time I tried one I would reference some other game use of the mechanics and without fail they would say "idk about that one", and I'm like wth? You people never heard of Bohnanza, Hansa Teutonica, Condottiere, Century Spice?
I'm not saying they are ripping off games, it's perfectly fine to iterate on an already established mechanic or game, or to even discover it on your own, but you would expect a designer to be knowledgeable in a fair amount of board games, let alone ones that aren't even that obscure.

Is the success of SETI due to it's availability? Low price point, wide release paired with a pretty cover.
Shackleton base or Civolution on the other hand are pricier, less available and don't have attractive covers. Most reviewers rank these two above SETI.
What is you most played "big" game (not fillers, short-ish games that would skew the count)? Lets say in the last year.

Games that pay for reviewers to begin buzz, or pay to boost their kickstarters/gamefound, fraudulently raise their FOMO, etc. All little tricks that determine success. Very little to do with the game being good. Just look no further than miniature IP games constantly raking in money despite consistently being uninspired boring repetitive designs. SETI has a much better production than either of these games and appeals to the broader euro heads that play Terraforming Mars. It's a real head turner when setup on a table, and I think the five round game arc is more appealing. I'd actually argue that SETI is a better game than Terraforming Mars for a number of reasons.

When thats the only thing you mention mattering to make it better than other games thats how I know the industry is cooked. The average gamer will always chose an average quality game with great visuals over an average with game with great quality every time and that is why mediocre stuff like SETI takes off. Most of the mainstream just wants something pretty on the shelf and for photos but fuck actually playing them more than once or even at all
>>96375582
SETI is not a mediocre game. I've played a dozen other games that came out this year that I'd happily never play again, and I'm still happy to play SETI when someone breaks. It's having a lot of success because it's an incredibly well rounded experience.
Want to get a new game. These are the ones I'm currently interested in.
>Shackleton base
I saw some positive reviews by anons her. It looks like an interesting game but doesn't stand out just by looking.
>DS Marine
I love playing the shorter version of original DS. But it's harder to get 5+ people and get them to play it. This one is supposed to work at lower player levels but has some other differences that make it somewhat different and I'm not sure it's for the better.
>Skymines
Never played Mombasa but I always wanted to try it. Good reviews, interesting gameplay. Won't be a problem to get others to play. But I hate the card colours and design as it all seems the same. At least in video and pictures.
>Civolution
A game that wasn't on my radar until anons here started shilling. Now I really want to play it. I almost convinced myself to buy it but the big problem is the space it takes. It wont fil nicely on my table at 4p. Seems weird but it's hard to play if the whole table is cramped full of stuff and everything is mushed together just to fit.
>Argent
Similarly to Civolution, it's a table hog. The art might be a problem for some of the other players and the I suspect the game might be too mean for one player that sort of avoids direct actions that hurt other players. He plays the games but usually avoids such actions and I suspect he would enjoy playing.
>Sol
Game looks weird. I like the idea of shared infrastructure and positive interaction. But I'm not sure of the rhythm of the game. Does not seem to be much feedback on this game overall.

And I've played a dozen other games this year that do exactly what it does just without the overproduction and that's the only reason why it's having success because of the marketing push it had to showcase that. You can't honestly try to argue that if it looked like castles of burgundy it would have sold half as well, or that the way it looks isnt part of the 'well rounded experience' you mention.

You've seen over a dozen games this year that offer a 3 tier rotating board that positionally abstracts opportunity cost and area control mechanisms?
>>96375725
The alien modules do introduce some interesting mechanics beyond scoring options, but some are definitely better than others. I didn't love the Starship trooper bug aliens that basically just tacks on a pick up and deliver mechanism with dynamic rewards. The card rewards you get from the aliens I think are the best part though. They're all fairly strong and feel relatively thematic. One of my criticisms is that if you don't get early investment onto the aliens it's really tough to stay in the game without the strength of those cards. I can see the aliens getting old if you play it all the time, but I think they're releasing an expansion with more aliens fairly soon.
My main criticism of the game is that it's 30 minutes too long. A teaching game or any AP at the table and you'll be nearing the 3 hour mark.

Knizia says he doesn't really have time to play other games on his own but is shown them sometimes by his playtesters. Granted he's making a bajillion games, but those indie developers you're talking to are far less talented and probably spend the same amount of time on just one.

Sol, DS, or Argent. FWIW the rhythm of Sol, that circular mother ship movement you can't really avoid and must time right, is really unusual and I find that fun. The other great part is, as another anon recently realized, the absurd amount of variability in the (rather strong) powers.

It's forgiving enough. There's so many different avenues, you don't get shut out of optimal moves completely in a frustrating way. I have heard people compare the feel of it to Hansa Teutonica. Imagine if in that game your place a cube action was only allowed in one quadrant which cycles each turn, but the other actions worked as usual, and you have something approximating what the mothership orbit does to gameplay.

Aaaaand thats a Collapse trigger at 26 minutes in, W goes to the Bot.
I even had a turn with 3 unrest in hand, could have wasted the turn to return them all.
I decided to take even more Unrest with the Japs Clans card and be greedy.
I am impressed. This bot is very straightforward to run. Reveal card, look on bot checklist for card type, execute effect. Rolled die will match a bot card and cancel it from resolving that turn, plus dictate some bot effects. In this case, T1 rolling a 6 did not neutralise any bot card, but did prevent it from adding population tokens to the market to later acquire when multiple pinned cards showed up.
But the Qin end of turn auto adding pop to cards led to it acquiring and ending game anyway.
Im going to run this again with better unrest management and see how intuitively I notice the bots play patterns and can disrupt/counter its actions.

The other half is most of the fags who play said classics are either established or too autistic to go to meetups
I know the frustration though, I've made it a point to not even mention other titles until I clarify what their inspirations were. And at this point I keep musing just going more and more to solo because of slowly burning bridges with the former camp

Wow, game two went the distance.
An hour and forty five minutes later, the Japs declared a masterful victory over the mainland yellows, 101 vp to 52.
Triggered game end 3 ways to Sunday, depleting the Market deck for initial trigger, while final round saw Qin also claim King of Kings and I developed the final card in my development deck.
The Japanese develop a disgusting board with tons of pinned cards, exhaust triggers off of plays you already want tondo, and great abilities to profit off of said board state.
The Qin bot was fairly peaceful, acquired a ton and amassed a large population. Never achieved an Empire, and by late game once when regions were gone, it cycled through playing Regions (unable to acquire more), attack cards (forcing me to lose regions at the cost of giving up its own) and Glory (usually not having enough region in play to obtain Fame cards).
Final impression of Imperiums solo mode: very nice! Resolving the bot was a breeze, so my attention stayed focus on piloting my own deck.
>>96378988
My understanding was the errors were mostly in the bot flowcharts in the solo rulebooks. I played with the Horizons bot cards that are all up to date, and so dont suffer from their dumb printing errors. If you teach people, it shouldnt habe an impact.
That said, in general, man that Legends/Classics rulebook is BAD. Not an all time stinker, but jarring flow, unclear terminology, and central keywords buried at the back. Even horizons has key details like how you obtain new cards left on PAGE THIRTY SIX.

DS: Marine is very very good. Argent is EXCEPTIONALLY good. I think the only worker placement I would rather play over Argent is Three Kingdoms Redux, and that's a 3-player only game with space and time requirements that limit how often I can table it, so Argent still comes out more often.

Watched one of his reviews w/o the wife. Actually liked his review style. No jokey, how the game makes me feel shit, moreso talking about how it actually plays. Went to his channel to see if he had more only to discover he's fallen prey to the "five games I'd play in a gas station bathroom" style slop videos. Too bad, but I'm sure it gets him some views and much easier to pump out in comparison to a review.

Ebay will cover you if you don't get it, don't worry. It's longer than that. Hopefully the seller didn't flake on you anon. I've had that happen and it sucks. What game?

I like it more as a solo game than a multiplayer one, but I don't like playing board games solo so it's not for me.

In almost 2000 games, most of them arena, I have never encountered this at any point. BGA is an incredibly well mannered place.
Which game were you playing? Maybe the reason is to be found in there

I'm curious about this game too. Not so much for the cheesecake art as much as the theme. (I'd be willing to play the real photography version too, even if the colors are a bit dull with seemingly all the pics being black & white.) Deck-building a panzer battalion sounds fun.

I've occasionally had shipping stay stuck on some step like, "Package dropped off at carrier," for a over a week until the day before it arrives when it's retroactively updated with all the stops along the way.
Could be the case here. Who is the carrier?
