I honestly wouldn't mind just having xeno rules. Orks at least have barely changed since the Heresy.

The Eldar should probably be very different since they were mostly proto dark eldar during the Heresy. Craftworlders existed but spirit stones and the path system only became widespread afterwards when Asurmens temple city was overrun by daemons and the phoenix lords went walkabout.

Some anon a while ago said something about how it would have been cool to have had a Great Crusade generic Xenos list. Where like the Daemon list, you could just add rules to fit your force. Mixed with some Militia Provenance type stuff and it sounds like a lot of fun. People would have carefully converted Hrud armies and Rangdan and so on.

I would like to fight xenos battles in the Great Crusade with my Dusk Raiders, then fight legion battles in the Heresy with my Death Guard, then fight the newly founded Inquisition forces in the Scouring with my Legiones Hereticus. But we can't have anything nice because three year cycle and blanding.

The ease of playing Pinning 3 artillery car park with SA or Arquitor grav-cannons (possibly even scarier) is why I'm strongly considering a Termite DS squad instead of the usual Thallax. Thallax can multimelta one tank, but the termite has a blast meltagun so if they're hull to hull behind a building you can get two, and the squad inside can shoot a different one.

The Praetor and all the other tiny superheavies like the Macharius also get pretty brutally mistreated by Giant Killer - you can kill a Praetor with two meltagun shots, and a baneblade/fellblade chassis with only three, and that handing over 2-4 VP is pretty brutal when the Kratos is happily doing more work for more points, rewards its killer with precisely nothing and doesn't have armour that infantry meltas can reasonably pen.

That being said, here's the Missile list:

3000 pts, AL:

Centurion, Command rhino with havoc

3*10 tacs in rhinos with havoc launchers
(Couldn't put any missiles on the tacs so gave the Sgts grenade launchers)

RoT: 1*7 Tyrant Siege Terminators

A generic xeno list wouldn't work without modifying the providence list somewhat.

I'd do a 2 part system personally.

Origin-Culture

Origin would determine the statline of your armies generic trooper as well as the base ppm. There would be Eldar and Ork equivalents as well as a few other interesting bodies.

Culture would basically be your providence equivalent. Each Ambition would unlock some bonus units, rules or wargear as well as having its own unique auxiliary detachment. You could have 1 or 2 culture selections but taking a second culture selection would also give you a debuff rule you'd have to select from a list as well.

After that you'd have a number of extremely generic unit types with a shit load of weapon and wargear choices. Could be fun.

Personally I like it. We could use more tribalistic elements in our Space Marines. Shows that for all their embellishment they aren't that different from the techno-barbarians of earth, they're all just psychos who were gifted supertech they don't even understand. It's part of why I love HH, where you have stuff like SoH being gangsters or WS having disgraced seppukku soldiers gives the faction A TON of flavor.

So what I'm saying is give me more feather cloaks you cowards. The winged jump packs are already one of the coolest bits in the range

That's not what happened. As narrated by Jonathan Keeble:

>โ€˜How would you like this to go, Eidolon?โ€™ Torgaddon inquired. โ€˜Would you, perhaps, like to go home with my cock stuck up your arse?โ€™
>โ€˜You are a base-born cur,โ€™ Eidolon hissed.
>โ€˜Just so you know,โ€™ replied Torgaddon, โ€˜youโ€™ll have to do an awful lot better than that. Iโ€™m a base-born cur and proud of it.'
>Before Eidolon could react, Torgaddon pounced on him, tackling him to the ground and pinning him there.
>โ€˜W-what are you doing, you degenerate!?โ€™ asked Eidolon, momentarily wrong-footed.
>As Torgaddon pinned his weight down on Eidolon, he began to rip away at the power armor covering his backside, tearing away ceramite and plasteel before ripping open the Lord Commander's bodyglove, exposing his shaved rear.
>โ€˜The point is, Iโ€™m the designated commander of the Luna Wolves speartip, come to rape your sorry backside. I do this by warrant of the Warmaster himself.'
>'N-NOOOO!!!!" roared Eidolon, furious. It is said that astartes knew no fear, but in that moment, a hint of that alien feeling entered Eidolon, and he despised himself for it.
>'Lucius!!! Get this barbarian off of me!!!" growled Eidolon, before he let out a deep, guttural scream. Torgaddon's raging cock was inside of him, 12 inches long and almost as thick. It was ripping his hole apart.
>As Torgaddon began to thrust, Lucius watched on his horror, before ripping away at his own armor near his groin, pulling out his own member and stroking silently. Yes, he had earned this, finally the Lord Commander would learn his place!
>"Y-YOU-" Eidolon let out, before screaming again, louder, as Torgaddon's pulsing phallus grew ever larger.
>Torgaddon tensed, hard, gripping Eidolon's pauldron to the point that the ceramite began to crack, before...
>"'AUUUUGGGHHH!' cried Eidolon as Torgaddon's gene-seed entered his rectum, spreading deep inside of him, soiling the purity of the Emperor's genetic craftsmanship.

Well, none of the superheavies are practical for the same reason we don't have gigatnaks IRl and big boats are always followed by an entire fleet of AA boats: Big slow things die to planes. And I'm not counting any of the self-propelled artillery pieces like the Arquitors because at that point we're not examining the tank, just the gun that would work just as well mounted on the ground and crewed by 5 guardsmen. So we're left with... Sicarans, Kratos, and the transports. I'm gonna go with Land Raider, probably one of the variants like explorator or Achilles. Virtually indestructible, best AI in the market, enough firepower to melt tanks, etc. The big honkin' ramp to disgorge angry men with axes is the impractical part, but that's solved by EWAR equipment or just another gun like the variants

Special Assignment is an odd one, honestly. Praetors aren't a huge step up on regular Champs in anything but Master of the Legion, you can't put a unique character in the SA slot so Mech can't do, say, Draykavac for the cool gambit w/ Macrotek apex, and at that point I may as well just buy more regular Magi because they give me more detachments. Solar Aux don't get shit. I suppose upgrading a shield-captain to a Tribune or a Magos to an Archmagos is at least a bit more substantial statline-wise.

On top of a tank is okay, but even then the additional height is one of the reasons they're not used frequently. On the sides of a tank it's much worse because now they impede mobility by making the tank wider and they're more susceptible to damage by getting caught on something and torn off and reloading them means you either need to exit the vehicle or open the hatches on the side which are now big weak points.

I had a 2000 pt Alpha Legion vs Thousand Sons game today, no pics. My 3rd, his 1st. He won 24-22.
Observations:
>Champions are dead 'ard. He and his tac squad tanked 50% of the TS dumping all their ranged weapons, then he by himself spent 2 turns locked in combat with the Sekhmet
>my Araknae was like an inverse Distraction Carnifex (Danger Zoanthrope?). He was terrified to move his tacs close enough to contest because the one time he did I got LOS and deleted half his squad
>the issue of what is majority in a unit of 2 models came up a lot and had to be decided with roll-offs
>Exodus was fun
>he used the current Asphyx bolter with the pistol rules and they were annoying but not terrible impactful
>Volkite Kratos is the answer to the tacspam question. Forget AT for LRs, bring it for the Kratos.

Out of curiosity I did the math, and rounding up the Kratos kills 7 tacs in 3.0 as opposed to 9 in 3.0.
However the main gun is now suppressive(1) instead of essentially pinning(0) in 2.0 and it's also cheaper and more durable. It can also run over infantry better and can't be moveblocked.

Overall I'd say it's an improvement, at 295 instead of 320, and its now much harder to put down. Having a better chance of denying the enemy scoring is arguably a bit better than killing the two extra guys, and a locus on it would make it surprisingly good at killing laser rapiers other annoying higher toughness units.

I never understood how that actually worked, as far as I could figure out you could never actually use the clause on the other side about using your remaining movement because you were specifically not allowed to keep going.

Ramming is interesting in 3.0 because you can tag as many units as you can touch so you could send a rhino for example barreling through an objective and getting d6 s6 autohits on any unit it goes over. It's a real shame you can't ram enemy vehicles any more though

The loadout I think is meanest and also possibly a good bit undercosted is melta main gun + volkite wherever else it'll fit. Throw the Decurion Locus on one of them and you have a damn near invincible tank that can freely engage any unit going, atomise even AV14 vehicles with a D8 mega-melta at 24" and Return Fire with same. Suffers slightly from the silly split fire rules, granted, but I'm not entirely sure what you're meant to do about someone rolling up with three of them short of deploying the Brass Scorpion or running only TEQ.

Castellax are solid line bots whatever you equip them with. The basic model is quite cheap at only 50ppm so you can take big blocks, and will happily sit there soaking fire while you buff them with cybertheurgy and fire 8-16 shots at enemy infantry per robot because they fire everything at full BS in the Volley phase. Don't expect miracles, but they're tough and with a Cybernetica priest in the unit they score as if they were Line 1-2 depending on the HQ choice. The special weapons guys have less brutal volley fire but solid anti-Terminator and anti-light vehicle guns, so tailor to taste.

Ursarax are a personal favourite, but you'll want your army led by a Lacrymaerta archmagos to get the best out of them - his special detachment lets you bring up to three units of Ursas and makes them S6 and W3, so you have 81 wounds of feral bear hugs charging up the board. They lose to terminators and dreads, but at S6 AP3 they'll blend any power armour they touch, are fast enough to get into and out of trouble and require a truly herculean amount of fire to put down unless someone has a ton of demolisher cannons or Phosphex. Don't really need buffing or attached characters, and the whole wave of 27 is about a quarter of your list, so just let 'em rip with almost all claws, maybe a couple of fists per squad to can-open vehicles.

For once, a model that looks like it deserves T8 and double figure wounds. I thought the Calix was a bit overpriced this edition until I realised that the Sicaran Venator was about 70 points less, had the same gun and wasn't almost indestructible, even if it is a bit annoying that the Calix can't split fire that mauler cannon.

Normal castellax are a nuisance unit that are cheap, but need fairly serious weapons to remove efficiently, destructor castellax are genuinely threatening to elites, dreadnoughts and light vehicles, darkfire cannons are exceptionally good weapons because they are Supressive and also good at dealing damage, so your opponent will waste shooting at a 130 point unit so their expensive units don't end up suppressed.

It varies from Magos to Magos. That said one thing to keep in mind is that usually the Magi on campaign are the most militant of their kind.

There are plenty of Magi who either have no personal army at all or a personal army too small to be relevant on even a small scale. Those guys are usually exempt from most musters because bringing them would be pointless. Instead the Magi who go to war are those who for one reason or another have girded themselves for war.

Another thing to keep in mind is that the Horus Heresy is not most musters. There's a lot of interesting narratives you could draw from with a Magos or even a group of Magi who have no experience in war desperately trying to defend themselves with whatever they could throw together because the galaxy is in flames and it is all hands on deck.

Archimandrites, Lacrymaertae and Macroteks both work real well for such a theme with Cybernetica and Malagra being edge cases who would usually have at least have some experience.

The Myrmidax see war as a act of sacred communion with the Omnissiah and the Ordo Reductor are lunatics who worship Entropy. They're always prepared for a fight.

The mental stats are worth it. Thallax and Ursarax can't be joined by mechanicum characters because none are fast enough, and they can't get a nuncio-vox equivalent to clear Routed. They're Cool 12, so they don't give a fuck about most statuses, but you don't want them running every time they get slightly outkilled in a combat or get hit by a flamer, because they're very point-efficient blenders if they can stick in it.

The faction stuff is representing the fact that each Mech force is a combination of the personal retinues and assets of the Magi that make it up, so your main det can mix arcana because that's just where all your techpriests go. How this squares with having no aux detachment for actual Retinue slots is beyond me, but it works lore-wise. Mechanically, it mostly just breaks the Macrocarid and half the Macrotek Apex because Macrotek-keywording your transports prevents anything good from getting in them.

Although looking at the ol' Land Raider does remind me how the old Mk1 tanks from WW1 never had any suspension either and that never stopped their crews from doing dumb shit like this.
It fucking SHOULD HAVE you understand, but carbon monoxide and wanting to impress the king of england make people do dumb shit that knocks out two thirds of the crew apparently.
Seriously, if anyone hasn't already, the Bovington Tank Museum channel on YT has a really good rundown of what the inside of those tanks were like. No stowage on ammo racks so the slightest crash would fling the cannons shells about the compartment, braining people. They can't facecheck them in melee 90% of the time, but they have a lot of units that can chip down a few terminators in shooting for an affordable price. If you want a direct counter to 2+ Save 2W models it's a squad of three or so Domitars, which can be easily boosted to BS5 WS5 and then absolutely eviscerate a termie squad with an ungodly amount of S6 D2 Breaching 5+ shooting because they hit very nearly as hard in volley fire as they do in the shooting phase, they can put out 9 shots per model and then charge with 4 attacks of a similar statline, killing about two Cataphractii per bot on average before thunder hammers can swing.

Mech struggles against EW terminators in particular unless they bring very particular gear, but only the Huscarls, Morlocks and Deathwing can really fuck them up in return, Red Butchers and Deathshroud just don't have the damage and Custodes usually have bad enough invulns that you can just blast 'em.

More specialised solutions beyond Domitars or statusing them into oblivion include "throw Scoria at them" - he will beat any five terminators you care to name and even a full squad of ten thunder hammer justaerin probably take over half the game to bring him down if they don't run first - or "Deploy Brass Scorpion", which can't be locked in combat, will easily be repaired for the scratch damage that thunder hammers can do to it and can spam D3 Breaching 5+ large blasts at them every round because it just backs up slightly, then shoots + volleys. There's no real Mech melee counter to a primarch + elite termie deathstar beyond statuses, the Primarchs add too much beef, but that's not a surprise, that's a unit Marines can't facecheck without a matching primarch either.

I choose to believe this is how land raiders work, because marines can just lock up their armor to prevent them from bumping around wildly and land raiders aren't using huge 6 pounder shells. Well, tthe land raider achilles could, but a marine won't care about a few shells hitting his power armor, right?

This would also explain why IG can't use the things

The reason IG can't use "marine" vehicles is because GW wants the factions to be separate but equal. SoB, Inquisition, Arbites, etc. all use Rhinos. It's a simple, rugged vehicle. The idea they had to make an even simpler version for the elite SA is butt fucking retarded and exists purely because someone didn't want SA sharing vehicles with marines. The Emperor talked a big game about unification and manifest destiny and mankind's dominance of the galaxy but legitimately did not give a rats ass about any of those things.

All he cared about was the survival of humanity as a species. The entire imperium was built to secure him the time and resources he needed to finish the webway project but when it was finished he was only gonna bring in the people he thought he needed for his post Chaos society. Like a room on Terra filled wall to wall with calls for assistance no ones ever going to read because the office that used to process them was moved who knows where during the age of apostasy but no one knows how inform the wider bureaucracy of the problem so you have generations of clerks shovelling urgent aid requests into a furnace to stay warm while billions die preventable deaths.

How?? You have superheroic primarchs running around fixing things and having slapfights with other characters where no one fucking dies. You have cawl and his primaris marines undoing the '"forget the power of science and technology, for so much has been forgotten, never to be relearned" part of the foundational intro text. It's turning 40k into a generic science fantasy universe where "da good guys win."

99% of the time people even use the word "grimderp" nowadays they're not even describing the bad writing it originally described, they're just complaining about servitors or 40k era imperial navy ships using slaves manually loading massive macrocannons using pulley systems and chains while singing sea shanties and being whipped by their overseers, which is thematic and badass and gets across the themes of societal degradation. Is that what you're complaining about, anon? Because anyone who does needs to be beaten to death with hammers.

GOOD. Ynnari are a remnant of when GW was toying with the idea of killing Slaanesh, and once they noticed that Slaanesh still sold, they reversed that decision quickly. Ynnari's entire faction identity is based around the idea of killing slaanesh with Ynnead early. And being humanity's bitch to do that, which is lame. Eldar should be assholes and craftworlders in particular should sometimes be allies of convenience, not buddies with the Imperium. This is 40k, not Fantasy Battles.

The wood elves and dark elves, yes, but the high elves are allies of the Empire. They don't really get along that well, but they're formal allies, which is extremely different from 40k where the Imperium wants to exterminate the Eldar and even craftworld Eldar will kill human civilians without a second thought, but they both have bigger fish to fry so they'll occasionally team up against a bigger threat.

Yes, I'm aware of them being the revenant legion and having a few dark moments, but in the HH proper they're not all that dark. And Flesh Eaters are a third founding chapter, so they didn't emerge from the legion itself but rather after the codex iteration of the chapter had been thoroughly tainted by the Red Thirst in the absence of their primarch, not to mention the Black Rage being a thing.

pre 8e and the HH does something similar with lots of clunky special rules and exceptions.
None are depth rulesets and never have been.
Streamlining is about avoiding unnecesary stuff while keeping the same outcomes, and by that metric 40k was only streamlined with during very early 3e.

A lot of what used to be listed as wargear is now part of a model's statline. It is more streamlined and easy, as you no longer have to look up what a refractor field does for example. But it does remove a lot of flavour and fluff from the game sadly.

Jump packs are another example, they're no longer listed as wargear but instead models with them have a movement value of 12 and the deep strike special rule.

GW is schizophrenic. They split unit profiles because explaining what a jumppack does is too complicated, but they changed (most, but not all) wargear to be army wide wargear lists instead of listing them per unit entry.

The Krios costs half as much and has a much better gun for this - AP3 base, plus a status. The main advantage of the Thanatar is that it has Barrage and is much tougher, neither of which matter much against tac blobs in the open.

What problem? I'd like jump packs for my Magi too, but until we get them, Thallax simply aren't for scoring, unless you just want an opportunistic couple of points on T1 and don't want to daisy-chain the squad back towards your DZ to temporarily attach a magos. The upside of Comptroller is that we can score with basically whatever the fuck we like, so once you do get that triple Domitar squad with a magos attached onto the point they're sure as hell not getting it off again with a few assault marines.

\hhg\ is my theory crafting here off or do vet breachers look really fucking good for World eaters?
Just a fat 10 man blob of them, giving them all a power weapon of some sort, and then like 4 las cutters and then just throwing them at things?

World Eaters in general look like they make a lot of things pop off, but those guys especially, yeah. I'm making an Istvaan 3 Survivors force as a fluffy list, and if Morturg had had more than seven world eaters with him I'd be doing exactly that. As is I have Paragon Champ + Six Praetorians in a Land Raider and I'm still considering going for termie champ + six vet breachers instead for lascutters and Vanguard.

I don't believe they do, since the wording of the WE bonus is "modify their Attacks Characteristic" and the weapon replaces your attacks characteristic with 1, regardless of what it is after buffs.

no they would not reason being is that the WE special rule increases the MODELS attack characteristic by 1.

Before Sanguinius died you could give almost anything sanguinius blood and it would become a space marine. Even knuckle dragging mutants dying of super cancer would get a progenitoid and a sippy of the angels blood and then turn into angelic figures in a week.

The only reason they were not the biggest legion is because the red thirst made sanguinius keep a hard cap on their numbers so he could keep them under control.
