Well... I wasn't exactly planning to do that. I did the gradient with my airbrush and decided it looked good-enough in person, at least by the metric that I had no clue how I'd clean it up without ruining the smooth gradient.
I will definitely add some yellow to the highlights though. Think they should be more towards the bottom with the dark green or the top with the teal?

I am now working on the the vox casters. I plan to make the “vox radios” red but the antennas metallic instead of a dark metallic for the whole vox case we part.

you're thinking of Warwick Kinrade, he was one of the main writers on the early IM books. Bligh wasn't involved in a major way until like, Badab War. A lot of Bligh's fluff contributions were from him writing for the Fantasy Flight RPGs, not the Imperial Armour books.

It's supposed to be thinned quite a bit and done in super thin coats with an airbrush. Thin it like 50:50 with water and get a wide flat brush, and apply it in a thin layer across the model. You don't want to flood it, you just want to moisten the surfaces with it. If you let it pool or build up too much it'll go glossy in the recesses and is hard to get that to go away with more coats. When you load your brush you want to wick most of the varnish away before hitting your model, and also be rinsing your brush between models or large parts of a model because it will start skinning on your brush faster due to the smaller amount in the bristles and could introduce texture that you don't want

don't thin down varnishes, just keep your brush moist, rinse frequently, and work pretty quickly. you can soak up excess pooling a bit but otherwise don't touch it once it begins to dry. most problems people have with brush on varnish come from fussing over it too much. if it does dry cloudy or rough you just apply another layer later.

It is not a quality product, it's an absolute dogshit product made of the cheapest of shits. Mine's tip broke after priming 40 models and basecoating some more but I got a replacement for $4 or so for it, the portable compressor is still functioning. It's not precise as well so even when I'm only trying to paint the armor it got on other spots as well.
That being said it still does its job.

Acrylics are non-toxic so you won't need a mask unless you are airbrushing enamels. Unlike spray cans which rely on toxic propellants, airbrush merely works off creating a vacuum and shooting out paint via air pressure so it isn't inherently toxic unless the thing you are spraying is toxic.
Airbrush paints are just pre-thinned paints so you can just buy thinner and thin down the paints you already have. Bottles of primer and varnish will run you far less than spray cans.

You don't need special paints for airbrushing, any normal paints can be thinned and sprayed even craft paints. And as long as your spraying in a ventilated area and not spending excess time in the area afterwards then a cheap amazon respirator is more than enough.
