The Imperium didn't take anything back in Damocles though (well, they did for a moment but then the campaign ended and it was the Tau's again). Plus let's be honest, the Imperium is never going to be able to afford to wipe out the Tau. They couldn't afford the resources required back before the Tyranids were a thing and before the Necrons had woken up en masse. They're sure as fuck not gonna be able to do it now that the Tau have tripled in size and gotten a bunch of new technology.

So yeah, the Tau are pretty safe from the Imperium. Other factions maybe not, but the Imperium will never be able to afford the resources they so desperately need on other friends to fight the Tau to extinction.

I got these guys + vanguard box (the one w/ eliminators and suppressors) for free from a coworker who apparently didnt realize you needed to put these guys together and paint them yourself. Gonna clean these guys up and fill the gaps with greenstuff.
Getting an extra set of suppressors for free though is the real bonus. You can't get them on their own so that was a pretty big score.

When it comes to Chaos and the Tau generally speaking there's a sort of....weird dynamic at play. Chaos has trouble affecting the Tau, and the Tau have trouble affecting Chaos, since they're both pretty resistant to each other. That said, because the Tau were having trouble damaging the Death Guard (Chaos + Nurgle blessings was making for a godawful tanky combo) they've since then created their own psyker corp to help combat it, as well as created warp-weapons via experimentation with some of the warp artifacts they found that have seen success against the Thousand Sons.

That's sort of the Imperium's major downfall desu. The Imperium treats humanity like a disposable swarm to be thrown at our enemies en masse.....except that doesn't work against basically every enemy the Imperium has.

Okay but what ELSE can mankind actually do? They cannot fight better, as only a few are Schola grade, and if you run the numbers, only one person per world gets to be a space marine (1 million planets, 1000 chapters of 1000 marines). Mankind cannot shoot better, as top production already pumps as many plasma guns as it can, and a trillion lasguns can still only do so much. So what's Mankind going to do, NOT sacrifice people?

Now? Nothing. It's too late for the Imperium, the rot is too deep. The time to change their strategy and ways was way back during the Great Crusade era, now they are left to deal with the consequences of their own actions.

But, had I been the Emperor, I would not have done the things he did. Instead of a handful of fanciful supersoldiers and a massive but ill-governed territory, I would've focused on improving the territory I did have to the best level that it could be, and then giving my soldiers better gear and training such that each individual Guardsmen would be Tempestus Scion tier, and well-supported with air cover and mechanization to boot. Quality over quantity in every aspect.
