I get where you guys are coming from, but I don’t think it’s completely over. Yeah, things have slowed down no denying that but scenes always ebb and flow. I remember when late 2nd felt dead too, and then 3rd came out and suddenly the store was packed again for a few months. I think part of it is just fatigue. Too many changes, too fast. Most people don’t want to relearn the game every couple of years. But once things settle and GW actually focuses on building up the factions again instead of constant resets, it might find its footing. The Old World’s cool, sure, but it’s also a nostalgia project. Give it a year and it’ll be the same pattern hype, burnout, quiet. I’m still running games when I can. As long as two players show up, it’s not dead yet.

I would say Idoneth, and it was originally, but GW's sort of mis-management(for lack of being able to think of a better word as I type this) of Idoneth as a faction is slowly wearing down my enjoyment of them and Lumineth are filling their place.

Didn’t expect this many replies, honestly. Feels weirdly comforting knowing it’s not just my corner of the realms going quiet. Reading all your takes the hopeful ones, the cynical ones, the guys still fighting the good fight it’s like looking at every stage of the same slow farewell. I’m not angry about it anymore. Just tired, I guess. I loved AoS for what it was the wild, messy, overblown thing it tried to be. It had heart, even when it didn’t make sense. But maybe that heart’s just beating somewhere else now. I’ll probably dust off some square bases, see what The Old World feels like. Not out of spite, just... curiosity. Maybe that’s where the spark went. Either way, thanks for the talk, anons. Yeah, we're definitely in a trough, but it's by no means over. Sadly since we're heading into the yearly holiday season lull a bit earlier, the doomposting is going to skyrocket.
As for my personal experience, 4th has been my most active edition. From about the middle of 2nd I played almost exclusively with my friend and his brother, then just my friend. A local store within a reasonable distance happened to start doing RTT's. We had regularly 8 or so dudes, then the local tourney grinding team had some guys come in and double our attendance, but it was a double edged sword since I'm not very good and they bring GT practice lists, so it's basically an autoloss vs them. A store closer to them is starting RTT's back up, though, so who knows how that'll affect their attendance to ours. I don't know what it is about the metroplex I live in, but it is DEAD comparatively for wargames. Sure game stores are a dime a dozen, but trying to find one where you don't get looked at like a second-class citizen for asking about wargames or that stocks Warhammer beyond the tiny shelf full of dust-covered kits and outdated books is hard. I'm lucky I enjoy painting so I can just keep my head down and work on my models until the community excitement starts back up again.

Always buy second hand, if it hasn't release in the last couple months there's going to be cheaper options on ebay and in local stores. I've been grinding ebay auctions and bids and have bought the better part of a 2k KO list. Some factions like gitz are quite expensive unfortunately. I was looking at a second hand squiq battleforce box and it was like $200 for less than 700 points of units, even if your building them to be the higher point cost ones. Unfortunately horde armies are just always going to be more expensive, but if your smart, you can find deals on /r/miniswap, local stores/discords, else where online second hand to make whatever army your trying to build more affordable.

the entire fyreslater faction is 1 unit, 2 if you want to be generous and say that putting the same unit on a lizard makes it different. GW has painted themselves into a corner by calling them slayers and defining slayers as naked dwarves, so every unit is just a naked dwarf in a slightly different pose. There's no expanding that can be done, they just have to admit they fucked up and either soup them with the dispossesed or squat them entirely.

They're the most boring heroes to someone who's already an aos customer, because what's otherwise most appealing to an aos customer is at a first glance repulsive and confusing to anyone else, and Warhammer quest boxes try to appeal to an outside demographic.

The important part of the cover was putting front and center the human male fighter and the dwarf, the two women are there because they are boring and don't change the scene.

I like the fluff on the quest characters so far. Except the dwarf. I dont really even hate him, I just dont see how his background is gonna materialize in the game. Maybe he gets moments of shame? idk.

I can't get invested in the AoS lore. I tried so many times but I simply can't find anything to get me hooked.
I'm playing/collecting AoS since the day 0. I remember talking people into giving it a try, explaining to the LGS owner what the first GHB was since people were giving literally no fucks back then. I'm still around, managing the local playgroup that exists for 10 years now and sharing stuff here as well and yet I can't find anything in the lore that would see me even remotely interested in the story.
I like some of the battletomes in the vacuum but the general setting premise is so inconsistent, detached and chaotic, it makes me actively avoid getting attached to any characters or locations.

Tahlia herself is doing what she can to secure Embargard since the crusade, Teclis is out of commision and is likely whats going to be what lets slaanesh have an opportunity to be set free in 5th edtion which has been something that's been in progress since the settings inception. Also lumineth in general are kinda fucking with elf-human elf relations right now because they keep forcibly trying to enlighten everyone, can probably blame his lack of supervision on that too.

who is in said Embargard with Tahlia, and is on speaking terms with her, which that alone already sets up an insinuation he and his anti Har Kurnon/ anvilgrad loyalist base even stronger, and between his faction and morathis already preexisting opposition makes Har Kurnons future kinda iffy. Not to mention shes already one of the central figures actually holding BACK the rats back, she might end up returning to a city that already has eyes on it with exhausted resources to contend it with.

I think this idea that actually they’re going to be a completely seperate group of survivors of the khazalid empire who were hidden away in their surviving holds (unlike the Helsmiths, who… are also that, and have their justification for not doing anything be that they spent that time killing the holds that refused to submit to Hashut) and that the disposessed are going to be kept in cities as a major presence alongside the two other factions of khazalid duardin, is just pure cope to avoid thinking too hard about how dumb the idea is. If this is real cities are going to lose disposessed, whether literally in lore they decided to abandon them to join the soup or they’re just quietly downplayed and GW pretends they’re not there and more populous than the new guys, and the khazalid holds are going to ape their aesthetic to just be dwarf holds 2, with fyreslayers shifted to lose a lot of their uniqueness in service of being a subfaction of the army.

Not really. We got supposed list of Fyreslayer models staying, though we still don't know if, for example Vulkites are actually being squatted or just refreshed or replaced. We got a rumor from a different guy about a Grimnir Golem (With Boole later confirming golems but not necessarily that specific type of golem) and a Battering Ram with Slayers, and we know the update will be at least 9 kits and mostly focused on the Nu-Dispossessed side.

GSG are probably the best army in the game and one important part of that is their visual and thematical cohesion that were already present in fantasy.
Age of sigmar took those traits and enhanced them with new units, the giant was replaced with the much more fitting dankhold troggoth that fills the niche of big beefy beatstick, sneaky snufflers give thematic buff that fit the bad moon fluff etc.
Spiderfang goblins are the only thing that clashed a bit with the rest of the range but everyone was expecting them to be updated into moonclan goblins or something more fitting.
Wolves just don't fit into the army visually, them using sun energy to "kill" the sun is also garbage when put together with gitz and that the wolves were meant to replace spiders having poison bites and all is just a middle finger at that point.

Some people will disagree, but I think Warcry suffered mostly from GW deciding that Warcry was going to be a game about players buying expensive plastic terrain.

I'll admit it works for Killteam, but that's because terrain is insanely important in 40k, and just works better generally in a game where literally everyone is packing at least one gun.

Every Warcry set came with a giant pile of terrain, even when GW did a half-hearted pivot at the very end, every box still came with a single massive terrain piece as the center. While Warcry does have cool terrain rules compared to normal AoS, it's still a fantasy game which means it's mostly melee and terrain is mostly for atmosphere. You simply didn't have a playerbase itching to buy all the plastic meat trees they could get their hands on.

The OG Warcry box was a sick deal, but on average they were about the same cost as a Battleforce or Edition Starter, aka $200+ for two warbands, a bunch of terrain, and cards, booklets, etc.

Not a terrible deal if you really wanted the terrain, but if you just wanted the warbands...awful, paying basically double what it would cost you to just buy them separately. I suspect that what happened is that once Warcry transitioned from once in a blue moon starter boxes to Killteam style quarterly big boxes is that sales fell off hard as people just waited for the individual warband releases instead of buying the box.
