I've been holding off painting them for the longest while. Assembled all 30 and painted their armors with an airbrush, doing the rest in batches of 10 with a brush and I'm just not feeling it. Didn't attach heads for some reason, for anything that's not a character I'm not sure if it's worth it.

I've got about 4 hours to kill but there's nowhere on campus to paint

When I was younger I did all meme things like subassemblies, but as I got older... as long as the model is painted everything it is good enough.

That's actually another thing that bothers me about Tau lore, the Guardsmen are allowed to kill daemons because daemons are not immune to guns, just somewhat resistant to them. If you shoot a daemon enough times with a lasgun they will die. Hell, Cadia has literally established itself as a fortress against daemons manned by regular dudes with guns.

But then whenever the Tau are fighting daemons for some reason they suddenly become basically completely immune to regular weapons and they need to pull out something supernatural to do any damage. It's silly.

Alright so this is bad but you're first 20 models will be terrible. The idea here is that you mostly painted in the lines and put a lot of effort into a single model. You didn't really know what you were doing but you tried. Take this and slow it down, work on basic intercessors - clean up your metallics. Try priming white with a spray can and then watery layering your blues twiceover. Take your time with it and keep painting. Don't go back to redo this guy (except when you redo his base at the end).

Don't get discouraged - but clean up your painting area. Get 9 papertowels on a flat board, put your paints into a shoebox, and keep your area clean. Clean up trash. You also need to look at tutorials for basing after you've painted a few more models. Some really basic steps or texuture paint + your flock is what you're going to go for. What you have now for basing is a hard no from anywhere.

I say it mostly to mock taufags, but the intent of the article put the Tau in the level of a conscript thanks to all the tech (armor, helmets, drone, markerlight, gun, etc) they had. Space marines are the cheapest and easiest to start, plus there's enough overlap in space marine factions you can change the paint scheme and try another subfaction for a lot of the stuff or even just field them unpainted for a while to see which you like playing more. World eaters just chase melee, death guard focuses on being hard to kill/debuffing enemies, Not sure about night lords or ECs, both dark angels and space wolves focus on melee, while ultramarines are just whatever generic SM you like, and eldar focus on using speed and elite units to control the battlefield

Those three definitely have good aesthetics. I think night lords just use default CSM rules. Eldar and Dark Angels play very differently so if that matters to you you should consider that

Anyone know how to stop the grainy looking paint from drybrushing? Its fine for sharp surfaces but for something like skin i tend to use contrast and from a distance it looks fine but once I take a photo and post it here for example it looks hilariously bad

All the things you're struggling with are things that can be solved via the proper process, the only one of those that is up to feel and experience is thinning paint, which is something that is hard to wrap your head around, but becomes easier the more you do it, AND the closer you pay attention to what you are doing when picking up water, picking up paint, and mixing them. How deep are you dipping your brush in your water cup(yes this matters, where do you think the water further up on your brush goes after you rinse it), how much paint are you picking up to place on your palette, how long are you painting for before rinsing your brush and reloading? Take all of that into account and literally anything else you are doing with your water and your paint.
