Real Traveler's map™ thread, sponsored by SPLORED.COM©
Post your travel maps in this thread. Pic related is the official /trv/ Real Traveler's map™, edition 4.0.5

Fill in the countries and subdivisions you have visited, talk about your map and ask others about their maps. You can use the map however you like, the colors are more like suggestions, you don't have to use them, and you don't have to use all of them. You can add or remove colors and change the map as much as you want in any way you want. Don't like this map? Upload a completely different one. Up to you. Despite what some might say, there's no "wrong" way to use the map, and new posters and less travelled people are welcome and encouraged to stay and post :) This map is a group effort by our board, and we can only improve it if people reach out to share suggestions or corrections.

This is the newest edition of the map, edition 4.0.5, updated for September 2025. Thanks to an Anon in the previous thread, it is now easier than ever to fill in the map. You can use the website splored.com to easily color in entire countries with a single click. At the time of making this thread, it uses the old 4.0.4 template, so you still need to update it to 4.0.5 with the simplified template, but hopefully Anon will update the website after I make this thread.

Topic for this thread: Should we have a Real Traveler's Discord? Just something I've been thinking about. I don't use Discord myself, so it's not important to me, but it could be nice to have a hangout for the regulars or a "backup" in case 4chan goes down again or somewhere to share subdivision news if there's no thread up. Just interested in hearing your opinions on this.
Anonymous No.2819223 [Report] >>2819885
Pic rel is a simple template you can paste over your old map to update it, but only if your old map is the 4.0.4 edition. Otherwise you have to use the template in the OP.

Changelog for the 4.0.5 edition:
>changed to the borders of the Historical Latvian Lands, formerly the Cultural Regions of Latvia
>added three new provinces of Angola
>added nine new regions of Mali
>reduced the number of provinces in Burundi as per their new administrative reform
>added five new city and city-and-county councils in Ireland (Galway, Cork, Dublin)
>merged the provinces of Vietnam following their regional reform
>tweaked the borders of Iraq and the Republic of the Congo
>joined Trinidade and Martim Vaz to Espiritu Santu in Brazil, as per an Anon's request
>fixed some pixels in Indonesia
>new DLC, Danish counties and Montenegrin municipalities (IMHO they didn't turn out that pretty, but hey, they're there if you want to use them)
>the British Indian Ocean Territory will be handed over to Mauritius, but the deal isn't ratified yet so I've waited to include it on the map
Philippines. Too complicated for a single line of greentext. Fixed the regional borders, I added Negro Islands Region as well as separated Sulu from Bangsamoro, Sulu is not a part of any region anymore but it's not a region in itself either, so who knows what they're doing. I then replaced the regions with the provinces, as those are the ones actually used for administrative purposes, I THINK. It's not entirely clear. I asked /asean/ on /int/ and that was how I understood it, that the provinces are the primary administrative division, and the regions are more statistical groupings. Manila and Zamboanga City are not part of any province, so they are added separately. The city of Isabela is part of Zamboanga REGION, but Basilan PROVINCE. Correct me if I'm wrong in any of this. In any case, the regions have been added as DLC.
Anonymous No.2819225 [Report]
This map comes with "DLC", which are optional regions you can add for a few select countries. It's hard to make a good Real Traveler's Map without having some regions be too small or too large, or sometimes the official divisions are not perfect for a traveler for whatever reason. Up to you if you want to change one or more countries. Feel free to add or suggest others if you want.

What counts as having visited or lived in a subdivision? Completely up to you, use your own definition. If you need official guidance however, I personally like this Anon's post:
https://archive.4plebs.org/trv/thread/2337267/#2340603

In short, any visit of any length counts as a visit as long as you made a conscious effort to go there for touristic reasons. This excludes layovers and transits and such, but includes short visits such as leaving the airport for a few hours during a layover. For living, more than a month for non-touristic reasons, meaning you could travel around while there, but the reason you went was work or study or such.

There's also the Ultra Deluxe Autism Edition, with second level subdivisions for the USA, Canada, Russia, China and India. This was made as a one-off and won't be updated regularly. It's accurate as of March 2023, if you spot a mistake, please notify OP and it'll be fixed.
Changelog for US and Canada:

There's also this map:

with more second level subdivisions, but I haven't gone over it and can't guarantee its accuracy.

I combined it all into one map for simplicity. Link to the individual countries here:

Instructions on how to use the map with MS Paint, courtesy of Dutch Anon.

How do you fill in the map? It's very easy. You only need to use two buttons, which I have circled in red.
Say you want to colour a specific region light red, you click the tool that I marked B, and you'll see your cursor takes the shape of that tool. Then you left click the colour you want to use, i.e. the big circle. You'll notice that colour 1, which I marked C, changes to light red.
If you repeat this process but you RIGHT click a coloured circle instead of left clicking it, you will select the colour as colour 2. Let's click dark red. This way you can have both shades of red selected at the same time, which makes colouring in the map more convenient, especially when doing big countries.
Now you select the tool which I marked A. Let's get to colouring. Say you want to colour Indiana in light red and you want to colour Ohio in dark red. Easy. Left click Indiana and right click Ohio.

Damn, appreciate your thread as always. Just updated mine. It was fun (but predictable) to shade the provinces of Philippines again.
Anywho, from my previous update, I just came back from 2 trips. First one was a first time visit to Fiji & Tonga to swim with the whales. Expensive but one of the most fucking kino experience ever. Really highly recommend.
Second was my family's dream trip to Japan, though I've been there many times so the trip didn't excite me that much. Shaded Tochigi and Yamanashi prefectures. Nikko & Kawaguchiko were great. Definitely don't recommend traveling in August though unless you don't mind the summer heat.

This is splored anon, great work bro.

I'll add the map update to the todo list. I'm currently working on a map model which can be used to add a bunch of new features like map region labels, more advanced filters for the community page, give stats for your map and other stuff. It's a pretty long tedious task so it won't be that fun but I'll chip away at it.

I think the discord is a good idea, if you set it up I'll add a link to it in the sites nav.

Yeah, that was a fun trip. It was my first proper solo backpacking trip, just a student with all the time and not a care in the world. This was back in 2014 too so it was very budget friendly.
>What'd you do in Belarus and Moldova?
In Belarus I stayed mostly in Minsk. I found it difficult to get around as not a single soul in the entire country speaks a word of English, and I was very much a travel noob at the time too. The hostel I stayed at was quite dead, but me and a guy there went to the Khatyn memorial. Minsk itself was a very fascinating city to stroll around in, the city was completely demolished in the war, so everything was rebuilt in grand communist fashion. I went out for drinks by myself a few times, but the nightlife there was non-existent. Highly rated places on Google were completely dead, as in I was the only guest there. It was really weird, worst nightlife of any city I visited in Eastern Europe. I wish I had any exciting stories from Moldova, but alas I got a nasty case of food poisoning literally my first day there, so I spent most of my time on the shitter in Tiraspol and Chisinau. I spent a week recuperating in Brasov afterwards.

Just got back from Japan and I'm already thinking about a second trip there.

But before that I probably will want to do a trip to Italy and one to Poland for genealogy stuff.

My trip to Japan was two weeks but now I think it might be a more efficient use of PTO to do two one week trips a year than one two week trips. At least until I switch jobs and have an opportunity to take a longer one between jobs.

Learned a few things from Japan, including not to go there during the summer and also it's probably worth not being so cheap with hotels and also that it's a good idea to include rest days on a longer trip.

If I go to Italy I can't decide if I would rather do Florence Rome and Naples or a Northern Italy trip to Venice during Carnival and then go skiing and see an Opera in Milan.

If I go to Poland I'm not sure if I would rather do the entire trip in Poland, or add on either Ukraine or Czechia.

>Thanks man. I really like your map, you must have a lot of exciting stories to tell. Please share some photos from Fiji and Tonga :)
Yeah for sure. I honestly have no exciting stories to tell since I only did the normie stuff, but it was an adventure nevertheless. Traveling to this part of the world was interesting & I'm glad it wasn't dull as people on /trv/ make it seem.
Fiji is honestly what you'd expect: tropical paradise, boat cruises, expensive. But it's not sovless. Locals were very welcoming and laidback, cuisine was delicious, and the airport was interesting.
It's interesting how Fiji and Tonga are practically neighbors but are very different. Fiji's islands are mostly mountainous. Then you see Tonga and realize how the environment changed quickly. Landing in Vava'u, you're greeted by cliffs, deep blue waters, islands filled with palm trees with no resorts in sight. Driving from the airport was wild. Unpaved roads, chickens, cows and pigs running about, a boring main town, no infrastructure for tourism at all. But I was there for the whale swim (which I saw plenty), so it was great.
If traveling around Polynesia wasn't so expensive, I could probably do 2 separate trips there per year. I'm already planning for another visit 2 years from now to other nations.

Just finished up a trip to Iceland with my girl, was a pretty amazing place. Reminded me a lot of Alaska and Highlands Scotland, really enjoyed getting off the beaten path and dipping in random hot springs
Mostly focused on hitting all 50 states right now. Just in the preliminary stages for a few potential trips

Indiana: I think it would be cool to see the Indy500, poke around Indianapolis and go to the Indiana Dunes

Mississippi: For this I'd either chill in some town on the gulf, I've heard they have some underrated spots for that, or do a civil war trip with my dad for the Mississippi river campaign. We went to Gettysburg and Antietam already

Washington: I've always wanted to take the sleeper Amtrak to Seattle, would be fun to check out Spokane as well.

I'm sure there are a lot more I could do, I prefer to spend about a week in each state driving around and doing stuff so I can actually see a fair amount. Suggestions appreciated

Efate / Port Vila is okay but the outer islands are much more interesting
I mainly went to Malekula
It felt like a true adventure as it's so remote & the lifestyle is bamboo huts and living off the land etc.
Tropical paradise and very friendly locals
A village chief whose BnB I stayed at showed me the skull of a man his father had killed and eaten when cannibalism was still practised on the island (until the 1960s!)
Drank a lot of Kava with the locals, it's a drink made from a root which has mild intoxicating effect a little like weed. Tastes awful but feels pretty nice.

>How was Lebanon and Jordan?
Jordan is comfy, it's basically a vast desert with some real hellholes of cities sprinkled in between. Amman is fascinating for being so incredibly soulless, it was a tiny village of only a few thousand people 100 years ago, today it has 4 million people. The only sights are the Citadel and Roman theatre in the centre, the rest of the city is an endless sprawl of sandstone houses. Outside of the cities it's actually quite a beautiful country though. The centrepiece is of course Petra and Wadi Rum. You should spend two or three days in Petra and hike to the lesser known places, once you go away from the Treasury, there are no crowds. Or there weren't at least, I was there in 2014, which is starting to become a really long time ago lol.

I have mixed feelings about Lebanon. I lived there for almost a year and didn't really have a good time (it's a long story), also Lebs are some of the unfriendliest people I've ever met. At the same time it's hard to deny that Lebanon is a real treasure trove of a country, there's millennia of history around every corner and the nature is simply amazing. The highest peak of the Levant is in Lebanon, it's over 3000 meters tall. As for food, you should absolutely try "manoushe" or "Lebanese pizza". It's sold everywhere and was by far my favorite Lebanese food.
>Would you recommend?
If the situation there is calm, absolutely. On a good day both are safe and easy countries to visit, very entry-level Mideast countries. Lebanon is by far the more liberal of them, Jordan is very conservative, with poor nightlife and very few chances to talk to the local girls. Even during times of conflict, Beirut is mostly safe. The bombings are almost exclusively in the southern suburbs, where no tourist ever goes (except to and from the airport). But the situation can change from day to day, so you'll have to update yourself when you decide to go.

My recs for Indiana:

Indiana Dunes is great whenever, dune hikes are fun, a beach day is great is mid-late summer, and if not it’s still pretty cool to check out the shore.

The rest of the region is home, some people come just for urban exploration in Gary. Pierogi Fest in Whiting is great (but that’s late July so detached from an Indy 500 trip)

Outside of the region, South Bend and Fort Wayne, the north is really only known for little lake towns and Amish country, Nappanee / Shipshewana is IMO a less touristed version of Lancaster county PA, but if you’ve already done Amish country elsewhere you can skip it. They serve pretty good food.

Indy has got a lot of museums and bars, my favorite part is walking around by the canal. I really wanna see the Regatta one year. Get a pork tenderloin sandwich at a suburban dive bar on race weekend and just mingle.

West Central / covered bridge land - these things make it on all our state symbols, our license plates have these now. They’re kinda cool to see if you pair it with a hike in turkey run.

Bloomington is pretty, IU campus is scenic with all the limestone, and then Brown County is right there which is probably the best place to see fall in Indiana - again maybe not perfect if you go in May for the 500 but wouldn’t be terrible.

My ex wife is from Southern Indiana, Jasper, French Lick and Santa Claus is a good trifecta to hit while you’re down in that corner.

Tunisian motherfuckers are insane. They are legit spice fanatics. My guts have barely survived a week of eating ultra-spicy tunisian food. I like spicy food occasionally but this is something else. Even asking for "sans piquant s'il vous plait" will get you a plate of food that is spicier than what would be considered "spicy" in most places in Europe. These sons of bitches would use chili pepper paste to brush their teeth if they could. They use fucking chili pepper paste instead of butter to put on their bread. The standard appetizer at restaurants is straight up bread + chili pepper paste. It's wild.

Other than that Tunisia is really fun desu, I loved it, would recommend but bring stomach protectors because jesus christ eating like this for a week will do a real number on your GI tract if you're not already used to consistently eating very spice food

>Any Carthage kino there?
I went with my gf and we're both history buffs, so our trip was mostly focused on Carthage kino and other archaeology stuff. We went to Carthage to see the sites, the most prominent ones being the Tophet (ancient carthaginian sanctuary/cemetery where child sacrifice is rumored to have taken place), the Punic Port (ancient carthaginian harbor) and the Antonine Baths (roman-era thermal baths with also some carthaginian and byzantine stuff, the most well known and most impressive site). We also saw Carthaginian artefacts at the Bardo museum in Tunis and at the Sousse archaeology museum, although most people go there for the impressive collections of roman-era mosaics, Bardo has the biggest collection of Roman mosaics in the world, some of them are big enough to occupy a whole two-story wall.
>Also, it seems like Tunisia has lots of islands nearby, and some interesting salt lakes. Worth visiting for the nature and unique environments?
Yes, but we didn't really go to the desert and salt lakes, we only saw them by driving past them (flamingoes included). Sadly we only had a week, so we opted for the cities and archaeology sites in the north-west corner of the country. From what I understood, most of the interesting nature is in the south-east

>Did you get hassled / attempted to be scammed by locals? Like Egypt?
I've never been to Egypt, so can't really compare. Hassling did occasionally happen in souks and other very crowded/touristy places like the Antonine Baths, but it wasn't bad - we just said "no merci" and kept walking, and people stopped bothering us. Most "scam attempts" were people telling us to go to this or that shop, which was clearly ran by their friends/family - but again it wasn't hard to shake them off. People did tend to be quite chatty, especially when they figured out we were Italian. We were often given advice by random people on stuff like tourist attractions opening times or how to visit mosques without getting thrown out, people gave us directions, but nobody ever outright asked for money. We never felt threatened or uncomfortable interacting with people, actually most interactions were quite pleasant (my gf speaks fluent French and a lot of people there speak Italian, which helped us - English is not nearly as widely spoken).
People did warn us multiple times about pickpocketing, which apparently is a serious problem in Tunis and you need to watch your stuff closely, so we were always mindful of that. It didn't happen to us though, and we never noticed anyone attempting to pull moves on us. It was overall a rather chill experience

I really only stopped in Paramaribo. One tourist street, a few landmarks, bars, markets and casinos. Kind of ghetto, but nothing will happen unless you are a complete fool. Interesting mix of people speaking dutch, taki taki and their indian dialect, met some interesting characters. Good vibes and nice food overall though. I didn't hear there was much to do outside the city, and I didn't see much of the nature stuff either, but I don't think there's anything in SR you can't find in more interesting countries in the Amazon. Check it out if you're passing through or know someone there, but I wouldn't go out of my way for it.

Massive update. Just got back from a bicycle trip starting near Paris and ending near Madrid, collecting Basque Country, Cantabria, Asturias and Galicia in Spain and every single district of Portugal along the way. Picked up Poitou-Charentes, the last old region of France that I needed as well. About 3600 kilometers of cycling.

The Iberian peninsula is now complete, as is Western Europe as a whole.
I'm kind of starting to run out of European subdivisions to collect, which is somewhat worrisome.
