I thought their discussion of ENM is kidna spot on.
It sounds good, but it's always mired by the complications of being human
Ultimately, I think the show did a good job at depicting Connie as a realistic person. You can see the effects of her parent's actions in childhood. She's never really been interested in Chane (is it Chang or Chane? I always thought Chang, but it seems the sign spells "Chane" for bobby's restaurant), but her parents have always pressured her into a relationship with Chane because it'll improve her station in life and get them closer to the Wasonasongs. I think this is what led to this. Chane is kinda an asshole, and isn't really interested in Connie, or anyone specifically. He is self centered and wants to enjoy his college frat life. ENM was just a means to say they were going out without the consequences of going out, and naturally makes Connie an always available source of sexual gratification... a backup if you will. It was a situation not unlike Connie's parent's situation of lying about their divorce for the sake of appearance. If left unchecked, they would've probably ended up in a very similar position, putting on the appearance of dating while in reality they're unhappy.
