I think the timeline works.
Noelle and Kris have drifted apart, and may not have had a full conversation in years.
Susie's new to the class. We aren't sure how long exactly, but it might have only been a few weeks.
We know the soul's been controlling Kris since before we start playing (Kris has clearly had that cage for a while), so she may have never seen Kris acting normally.
They also didn't get along before now, so maybe Susie thinks the louder voice is just them getting more comfortable.

I'd really love some tension between these two about what is and isn't normal with Kris.

I really like the Mantle Zelda game's concept. The idea that Kris is playing his own Deltarune is great. Look at how both us the player and Kris don't hesitate to kill on what they know is a videogame. This is fun to Kris, we know he's the kind of guy to kill Yoshi on purpose already, but it's funny how the morals of not killing all fall apart here.
You can kill, it won't count as a real kill anyway, right? But even in a videogame Kris still looks aside when you kill Ralsei and Susie, despite them not being real. And the funniest part is, because it's a videogame, you're above consequences, until Mini-Kris comes out of the screen, sword in hand, then Kris backs the fuck off at the prospect of having just trained a murderer version of himself.
The weird sense of detachment even at a coding level for the Zelda game is what makes it great. It's a mere test of morals with no consequences for you the player, but maybe for Kris who is playing.

I'm not seeing anything about taking more damage the higher your HP is on the shitty wiki, just that DF is more effective when you'd take more damage proportional to your max HP, assuming 3/4 run off the same formula as 2 did because I can't find anything about 3/4's damage formula with 30 seconds of googling.

Base damage is still usually the enemy's 5 ⋅ AT, but DF is factored in differently to account for party members' variable HP values.
For each point of DF, damage is reduced...
...if the current damage is greater than 1/5 of the party member's max HP, by 3.
...if the current damage is greater than 1/8 of the party member's max HP, by 2.
...otherwise, by 1.
For example, an attack with a base damage of 30 against 120 max HP and 4 DF would be reduced by 3 (to 27), then by 3 (to 24), then by 3 (to 21), then by 2 (to 19). Defense is thus more useful against attacks that deal higher damage relative to the party member's max HP.

Given the above, and how there's no mention of the enemy's base damage actually changing that I can find with a quick search, just cranking your HP and DF through the roof should give you plenty of survivability if you really lack the fucking opposable thumbs to play Deltarune.
