I have a theory that Kris was actually a kid that was scared of the dark and creepy stuff. He surely had incredible imagination, since he played pretend with a plug adapter.
If you notice, in his room, the lamp is closer to the bed than Asriel's, and he sleeps with the curtains open so the light of the moon goes inside.
