I think Sisko is an extremely kino captain up there (And I'd say bested by but ADMITTEDLY Sisko's kinocitsticity was muffled by the fact that DS9 largely had better stories than TOS so there's less focus on the ham so there is still an argument for Sisko but) with Kirk

ALSO every once in a while I get the slight urge to load up STO again. I don't even know if it's as free-to-playable as it was back when I actually played, don't know if the level cap's raised, DON'T KNOW SHIT ABOUT ANYTHING but that fucking game with the weird grim darkness of the distant future focus to have warfare everywhere was really comfortable and nice to quest in. Zipping around the map. Sending your underlings off on their gay little away missions and getting new rare underlings which is mostly pointless but it's fun bullshit to do while flying. Getting as many exotic female alien bridge crew as you could and giving them gigantic tits so they'd be bouncing around with you on away missions. In so many ways it was a bad Star Trek game but whatever the fuck it is or was I liked it

I am using the term loosely. All characters are shit for the sake of drama. They establish that Sisko is not suited for Star Fleet the moment they show his anger against picard for what he did as a borg.

Oh, no wonder I've never heard of it and nobody knows what you're talking about. I lasted two episodes in S1 of that shitshow.

Came back for S3 because it was supposed to be nostalgia bait and actually decent but turns out it was complete shit, there was no militaristic feel, and none of the characters acted like themselves. Picard only spoke with real authority and presence once in the entire season and everyone had that same, "we're all buddies teaming up to save the day" dialogue. It fucking sucked.
It wasn't Picard, Riker, Worf, etc, it was Stewart, Frakes, and Dorn in make-up.

At the end of the day it was still a cheesy generic detective story that Shatner himself considered "the type of book you pick up to read on a flight and then toss in the bin when you land", stuff that threw around cyberpunk inspiration without much to actually do with it at long length. The show at least tried to do more with the material like android rights/consciousness and stuff, but I don't think even with a higher budget and a consistent cast it was ever gonna hit big.

It was an Empire. It categorically was not Chaotic alignment. It wasn't a desperate free for all pack of raiders, there was an established government with a chain of command, with rules and laws. The fact assassination was considered an appropriate method of earning a promotion is irrelevant. The captain was still outranked by an admiral who was outranked by the Emperor, no matter how many people they had killed to get to those positions, or how they maintained obedience and discipline aboard ship.

He says all sorts of weird shit in this interview, including some weird pedo shit.
The QRD is that his mind was slipping pretty bad. He had a series of small strokes throughout the late 80s, eventually culminating in a major stroke that would end up killing him in the end. Strokes can give you brain damage and Gene became something of a mess, all when TNG was first going into production and throughout the first two seasons.

Not saying it was bad but everyone treats it like it doesn't have the same ratio of 'great episodes' and 'fucking dogshit' that the other series have.

Like for example, the Cardassian v Bajoran civil war and history was interesting, but they kept flip flopping into making Gul Dukat a sympathetic villain with his daugther, and then giving him sleazy rapist vibes putting the moves on Kira and then all the bullshit with the Wraiths.

I'm not saying a character can't be both good and bad, but I got fucking whiplash trying to keep up.

There's a 60 issue run of JJTrek that's fairly decent. Starts with rehashes of ToS episodes, has some stuff that connects back to the films, a bizarre crossover with DS9, some original stories and ends with several issues that are basically a memorial to Leonard Nimoy and a loveletter to Star Trek as a whole.
https://readcomiconline.li/Comic/Star-Trek-2011

There's the TNG Mirror Universe stuff about Mirror Picard getting the Mirror Enterprise and crew together, then their adventures together.
https://readcomiconline.li/Comic/Star-Trek-The-Next-Generation-Mirror-Broken (Start here)
https://readcomiconline.li/Comic/Star-Trek-The-Next-Generation-Through-the-Mirror
https://readcomiconline.li/Comic/Star-Trek-The-Next-Generation-Terra-Incognita
https://readcomiconline.li/Comic/Star-Trek-The-Mirror-War

Year Five is about the original ToS crew and has a fairly questionable story arc that's got some fairly big plot holes in it. But it's decent enough for one go through.
https://readcomiconline.li/Comic/Star-Trek-Year-Five

The current ongoing series about Captain Sisko returning and the spinoff with Captain Worf. Passable but the big storylines are some, well, stupid shit.
https://readcomiconline.li/Comic/Star-Trek-2022
https://readcomiconline.li/Comic/Star-Trek-Defiant

Other than that you can just search for Star Trek and get a bunch of the collective crap they've put out over the decades and poke around for something that catches your eye. I wouldn't call this a comprehensive suggestion, or even particularly good, but it'll keep you busy for a while.

Remember when he wanted the Ferengi to wear huge codpieces and not merely imply that they deal in sex slaves a lot ? And not just treat it as a bit of a joke because "haha aren't they just creepy and dumb thinking everyone else also just buy females" but complete with raiding federation ships to enslave their women etc.
Because that was his plan when in the concept phases for TNG.

Advertisement is the great filter that is typically posited to explain the lack of evidence for other civilizations in the observable universe.
The Ferengi are a statistical anomaly in that they were discovered by other space-faring species and at the very least purchased warp drive technology from them, presumably while still pursing advertisement.

They had ran out of things to do with his character aside from being O'Brien's buddy.
The whole "greenhorn learning the hard way" had not really worked because they didn't commit to it for his character and it instead transferred into the whole theme for the Dominion Wars story.
They wanted to bring the topic up.
So you have a character that's somewhat directionless and a direction you want to go.
Put the two together and ta-da.

I liked that plot point not so much for what it did to Bashir's character because after the reveal he is often very flat monotone and boring, but because of what it says at the greater Federation's attitude towards genetic enhancement and physical augmentation. It's part of the hopeful charm of Star Trek that everyone is mostly just a regular guy, crew members are short, fat, bald, women, all kinds of people even though its not the most efficient they believe in humanity. Of course the technology is so advanced every crew member could basically be as augmented as a borg drone but Star Trek is in general really anti transhumanism.

They easily could, there's probably a dozen episodes where someone needs a disguise that's sophisticated enough to get past sensors and the doctor can basically alter them at the genetic level in an afternoon. Unironically, it started in that joke about the time Bashir "mistook a pre-ganglionic nerve for a post-ganglionic fibre" and the guy who wrote that line being called out by multiple people because absolutely nobody at that level of medical education would confuse those things. They're completely different. It only works at wordplay for laymen.

And from there they wondered why he would get such an obvious thing wrong. Then that he threw the test on purpose to avoid something. And then the rest we all know.

Unironically, yes.
One is a matter of prejudice towards others.
One is a matter of ego and self-perception.
They're pretty different questions.
And all jokes aside, it would be an interesting topic to adress in Trek : does vanity still exist ? It's pretty clear it would be frowned upon within Starfleet as it goes against the core concepts of duty, service and responsibility but what about the Federation civilians ? It's clearly not a problem for betazoid women to care about their appearances under the guise of their older customs but is that all there is to it ?
Because for a Federation civilian who isn't fully devoted to a higher cause then caring about one's self is all that would be left since every need is otherwise met. And not everyone is going to be the type to selflessly devote their whole energy to Starfleet or science and industry.

The way I think about it is that a lot of things that we buy now are earned by social currency. A baseline which is not poverty-destitute tier is guaranteed due to a lack of scarcity, but that doesn't mean EVERYTHING isn't scarce. Federation positions are scarce and earned by merit. Presumably since not every dwelling is a communist one-size-fits-all-block slightly nicer places are available if you've accomplished stuff of note enough to earn it. But I do run into logic problems since it's like "Okay everyone is guaranteed a basic honda civic or toyota hilux or whatever. Comfortable, leather seats, all the lovely amenities. But if you want a ferrari you have to earn it". But then why would they care about luxury gucci car versus utilitarian? Well, Picard's a wine snob or something right? So clearly there's still that sense of taste and refinement. They didn't entirely evolve past taste, it'd just be about something that isn't inherently racial/ethnic/gender.

But you see where I'm getting at. In our world if you wanted to get tickets to some must-see-opera you could pay extra and you'd get in. In the federation money would be worthless. Maybe things would be more valuable (Picard grew his own wine innit?) but people should be beyond that. Instead you'd maybe get priority in a lottery or just plain priority if you were some accomplished war hero, scientist, diplomat, ect.

>>712975790

I aint' seen a lot of star trek but I'd seen enough of TNG to see people deviating somewhat from the ideal. Like the autist that would use the holodeck for his revenge fantasies until he became more responsible. Or the bitter and hateful war veteran who O'brien served with and he helped calm down from an internati- intergalactic incident.

Vanity definitely exists, it's just frowned on by starfleet and is repressed/discouraged

Only because of circumstance, and with a healthy amount of help from Kira and the rest of DS9. I won't argue Damar became a good foil for Dukat, because in the end Damar fought the good fight against impossible odds, side by side with an enemy he hated, throwing away everything he had learned in life to become the thing he hated for the good of his people.

But too little, too late.

The fact that they have unlimited cheap, clean energy in the form of fusion reactors and replicators can turn blocks of carbon and other basic elements into effectively unlimited food is why scarcity no longer exists on Star Trek Earth. It's also relatively crime free. If people have all their basic needs met, they tend to not resort to a life of crime. Sure, domestic violence probably still exists and you'll have the occasional murder, but premeditated crime and crimes of opportunity are probably largely a thing of the past in a post scarcity world.

Starfleet Academy is basically an all-discipline university that expects you to know the basics of every field before you get to focus on an area. Sisko being an engineer up to designing a starship means he was deep into it before he reassigned, he'd absolutely be able to keep up with O'Brien in a technical discussion.

Babylon 5 is weird and not always that great in season 1 as a lot is being set up.
Season 2 to 4 are great.
Season 5 is good but will always feel a bit weird as most of the main events had ended but they had to continue for one more season. Still managed it very for a renewal they pretty much didn't want though.
Crusade is unmitigated dogshit and a much better example of what happens when you try to continue on with a story that had clearly run out of material.

I'm talking about before Waltz. Waltz is what they had to resort to because they failed. Literally just spoonfeeding the audience on the way he thinks so they can set up what they do to him for the rest of the show. And even that episode fails because it shows he actually does have a conscious and self-awareness that until that point you could have assumed he actually bought into his delusions 100%

I agree with you, though, and it's something Behr refuses to take responsibility for with his revisionist history.

He blames Alaimo and Alaimo's friend, who is the one who wrote the Indiscretion episode which was really the start of morally grey Dukat.
But who the fuck approved that script? What, was Behr just unconscious that week in his capacity as showrunner and head creative nigga in charge? Was he unconscious for the episode where Dukat is fighting a scrappy underdog's war against the Klingons and Kira helps him? No, he approved all of this shit and very clearly, the direction for Dukat was more ambiguous and turning towards an anti-hero.

It's such a cop out for him to blame Alaimo for trying to make his character less of a villain, total bullshit.

Of the first five series of Trek, they all had kinda rocky first seasons. ToS is all dated by today's standards. TNG, DS9, VOY, and ENT were all differing levels of good but had those campy episodes in their first seasons. But DS9 really locked in for the back two thirds. ENT waffled a bit but their third and fourth seasons knocked it out of the park.

>In the first few drafts of the script, Kira is possessed by the Prophet and Winn by the Pah-wraith, and their battle aboard Deep Space 9 was far more elaborate than that seen in the finished episode. Weddle and Thompson wrote them as having a running battle all over the station, throwing fireballs at one another and completely destroying the Promenade. The whole idea, however, became far too complicated from a logistical point of view, and Renรฉ Echevarria was brought on board by Ira Behr to try to smooth things out and simplify the script without losing the essence of the plot. Apparently, when Steve Oster first saw Thompson and Weddle's draft he responded by proclaiming that it would be a fifteen-day shoot (a normal DS9 shoot is 6 days).
