Picard only spoke with real authority and presence once in the entire season and everyone had that same, "we're all buddies teaming up to save the day" dialogue. It fucking sucked.

the kobyashi maru mod for bridge commander, that is what a trek game should become. over 20 years ago we had mods that allowed not only saucer seperation, but the 3 ship promoetheus crap (mv/am) which was sweet. and then hardly anything forever now. i wanted to see a joining of bridge commander and elite force as a game, but it'll never happen now that they've raped the franchise so hard

>>712973978I liked that plot point not so much for what it did to Bashir's character because after the reveal he is often very flat monotone and boring, but because of what it says at the greater Federation's attitude towards genetic enhancement and physical augmentation. It's part of the hopeful charm of Star Trek that everyone is mostly just a regular guy, crew members are short, fat, bald, women, all kinds of people even though its not the most efficient they believe in humanity. Of course the technology is so advanced every crew member could basically be as augmented as a borg drone but Star Trek is in general really anti transhumanism.

>>712973978Unironically, it started in that joke about the time Bashir "mistook a pre-ganglionic nerve for a post-ganglionic fibre" and the guy who wrote that line being called out by multiple people because absolutely nobody at that level of medical education would confuse those things. They're completely different. It only works at wordplay for laymen.
And from there they wondered why he would get such an obvious thing wrong. Then that he threw the test on purpose to avoid something. And then the rest we all know.

Like I understand but can't wrap my head around the federation not having money.
It seems impossible for there to be no practical currency for the majority of citizens but in Star Trek The Federation has basically solved all scarcity.
>>712975443Then why do human women still wear makeup or do up their hair if they don't care about looks
>>712975498Because Roddenberry was a coomer and wanted attractive women on set
>>712975478>It seems impossible for there to be no practical currency for the majority of citizens but in Star Trek The Federation has basically solved all scarcity.Lets be honest, it doesn't take much to please a human.
That one episode that was in season 1 or 2 of TNG where it was basically
>humans from the 20th century are so shitty and dumb and horrible and we are so evolved and amazing now
was one of the worst in the series
>>712975478I think the general consensus when you start to think too hard about it is that there is money in the Federation, it's just exclusively for luxuries and indulgements. All the reasons we care about money have been solved so the average person doesn't think much of it.
>>712973721Worst episode of the series by far is Meridian. The one where boring Jadzia finds a boring boyfriend on a boring planet that disappears for 50 years or whatever and she has to overcome the boring conflict between her boring love and her boring duty
>>712975816>Brigadoon but shit

>>712976110>almost 2 episodes dedicated to O'Brien's Suffering a season in DS9
>>712975443Unironically, yes.
One is a matter of prejudice towards others.
One is a matter of ego and self-perception.
They're pretty different questions.
And all jokes aside, it would be an interesting topic to adress in Trek : does vanity still exist ? It's pretty clear it would be frowned upon within Starfleet as it goes against the core concepts of duty, service and responsibility but what about the Federation civilians ? It's clearly not a problem for betazoid women to care about their appearances under the guise of their older customs but is that all there is to it ?
Because for a Federation civilian who isn't fully devoted to a higher cause then caring about one's self is all that would be left since every need is otherwise met. And not everyone is going to be the type to selflessly devote their whole energy to Starfleet or science and industry.
>>712975478The way I think about it is that a lot of things that we buy now are earned by social currency. A baseline which is not poverty-destitute tier is guaranteed due to a lack of scarcity, but that doesn't mean EVERYTHING isn't scarce. Federation positions are scarce and earned by merit. Presumably since not every dwelling is a communist one-size-fits-all-block slightly nicer places are available if you've accomplished stuff of note enough to earn it. But I do run into logic problems since it's like "Okay everyone is guaranteed a basic honda civic or toyota hilux or whatever. Comfortable, leather seats, all the lovely amenities. But if you want a ferrari you have to earn it". But then why would they care about luxury gucci car versus utilitarian? Well, Picard's a wine snob or something right? So clearly there's still that sense of taste and refinement. They didn't entirely evolve past taste, it'd just be about something that isn't inherently racial/ethnic/gender.
But you see where I'm getting at. In our world if you wanted to get tickets to some must-see-opera you could pay extra and you'd get in. In the federation money would be worthless. Maybe things would be more valuable (Picard grew his own wine innit?) but people should be beyond that. Instead you'd maybe get priority in a lottery or just plain priority if you were some accomplished war hero, scientist, diplomat, ect.
>>712975790There we go. That makes sense. Labor is more about what you want to do or what you need to do in order to get somewhere you want to go (IE start off as some low rank)
>>712975115>humanity advanced past all its prmary needsThis was mostly proven to be a facade instilled in Starfleet officers rather than actual advancement, the mask cracks with multiple characters when they're under duress.

>>712976208I aint' seen a lot of star trek but I'd seen enough of TNG to see people deviating somewhat from the ideal. Like the autist that would use the holodeck for his revenge fantasies until he became more responsible. Or the bitter and hateful war veteran who O'brien served with and he helped calm down from an internati- intergalactic incident.
Vanity definitely exists, it's just frowned on by starfleet and is repressed/discouraged
>>712975790This still seems 'it just works...okay?!'. Replicators still need raw materials, how do they not get to the point of (since starvation and disease are no longer prevalent) breeding themselves out of space and resources?
>>712976102The first duty of every Starfleet officer is to the truth! Scientific truth, or historical truth, or personal truth! It is the guiding principle on which Starfleet is based! Now if you can't find it within yourself to stand up and tell the truth,

They don't do equipment courses and definitely never actually work on equipment.

>>712987237Starfleet Academy is basically an all-discipline university that expects you to know the basics of every field before you get to focus on an area. Sisko being an engineer up to designing a starship means he was deep into it before he reassigned, he'd absolutely be able to keep up with O'Brien in a technical discussion.

>>712990279>Andromeda>SorboslopThat shit turned fucking terrible faster than any show I've seen. One and a half seasons worth of decent episodes and it just nosedives.
>SG-1Eh. It's a fine show but I would never rank it above DS9.
>>712985391That was a pretty good example of the halo effect, though. Even when confronted with facts of someone cool's fuck ups, it's still hard to look past them being cool.

>>712990471I tried watching Andromeda.
When it turned out the ruthless "muh survival of the fittest" aliens were called the fucking nietzscheans, I stopped.
I prefer it when writers do not assume I am retarded.
>>712990842Because both do similar yet different things and both excel greatly at it for the most part.
As for Sorbo he's fucking insane and has the charisma of a wet fart, and I'm going to assume you think he's some brave, intelligent and heroic super actor.
>>712991103Nah, everything that holds DS9 back is that it is a "Star Trek" show. B5 didn't need any children on the promenade because that's not what the show was about. DS9 was limited by it's need for broad appeal.
>As for Sorbo he's fucking insane Yes. He is trying to create a galactic government. He is insane. That's what makes it great. His blissful optimism. He will drive back the night and rekindle the light
>>712991589Are we talking about Kevin Sorbo or his character now? I was talking about the actor.
>>712991589The presence of Jake and Nog elevates the show massively. It seems like a burden at first but I end up liking both of their characters a lot. They both have satisfying arcs and probably more growth as characters than anyone else on the show which makes sense given their age.
>>712991589Nog and Jake are underrated. Both get PTSD, moreso Nog I suppose.
>>712991679To me they are one in the same because I grew up on Hercules and Xena. I have no reason to shatter that reality for myself.

>>712975816You could literally say the same thing about any Jadzia episode that is actively about her symbiote or trill history. What a poor, unlikable character to hinge entire episodes on.
>>712991978>>712991736I remember Nog joining star fleet and becoming awesome, but I also remember Jake still being around and being an annoying twat. Too much of a twat to want to watch Nog's grow as a character.

>>712992198BSG is fine for two, two and a half season, and then it sharply declines. Babylon 5 is a masterpiece seasons 1-4 and the final season is still good, but not as good as the previous four. Farscape is kino throughout though it gets a lot better when Scorpious is introduced.

that 3rd person shooter ds9 game was pretty scary with the borg

>>712992198Babylon 5 is weird and not always that great in season 1 as a lot is being set up.
Season 2 to 4 are great.
Season 5 is good but will always feel a bit weird as most of the main events had ended but they had to continue for one more season. Still managed it very for a renewal they pretty much didn't want though.
Crusade is unmitigated dogshit and a much better example of what happens when you try to continue on with a story that had clearly run out of material.

>>712994732The show suffers a lot from Robert Hewitt Wolfe's exit. He was Behr's writing partner and largely, as it turns out by the decisions made in S6 and S7, his tard wrangler.

>>712997937Anon, Waltz is basically character assassination: the episode.
I think you're due for a rewatch.
>>712998040I'm talking about before Waltz. Waltz is what they had to resort to because they failed. Literally just spoonfeeding the audience on the way he thinks so they can set up what they do to him for the rest of the show. And even that episode fails because it shows he actually does have a conscious and self-awareness that until that point you could have assumed he actually bought into his delusions 100%
>>712998492I agree with you, though, and it's something Behr refuses to take responsibility for with his revisionist history.
He blames Alaimo and Alaimo's friend, who is the one who wrote the Indiscretion episode which was really the start of morally grey Dukat.
But who the fuck approved that script? What, was Behr just unconscious that week in his capacity as showrunner and head creative nigga in charge? Was he unconscious for the episode where Dukat is fighting a scrappy underdog's war against the Klingons and Kira helps him? No, he approved all of this shit and very clearly, the direction for Dukat was more ambiguous and turning towards an anti-hero.
It's such a cop out for him to blame Alaimo for trying to make his character less of a villain, total bullshit.
>>712998726>It's such a cop out for him to blame AlaimoDoes he seriously blame the actor for advocating for his character? That he was actually doing PERFECTLY? What a scumbag.
>>712998890Yeah, one of the worst things about that What We Left Behind documentary was the dogpiling on Mark Alaimo when he basically carried their fucking show in a lot of ways.
>>712997686Of the first five series of Trek, they all had kinda rocky first seasons. ToS is all dated by today's standards. TNG, DS9, VOY, and ENT were all differing levels of good but had those campy episodes in their first seasons. But DS9 really locked in for the back two thirds. ENT waffled a bit but their third and fourth seasons knocked it out of the park.

>>712999854I recommended it to my mother because Voyager is her favourite, she gave it a try, some episodes but thought it was not bad just not to her tastes, I know it got cancelled but that doesn't mean it was bad, never saw it myself.

>>713006193>In the first few drafts of the script, Kira is possessed by the Prophet and Winn by the Pah-wraith, and their battle aboard Deep Space 9 was far more elaborate than that seen in the finished episode. Weddle and Thompson wrote them as having a running battle all over the station, throwing fireballs at one another and completely destroying the Promenade. The whole idea, however, became far too complicated from a logistical point of view, and Renรฉ Echevarria was brought on board by Ira Behr to try to smooth things out and simplify the script without losing the essence of the plot. Apparently, when Steve Oster first saw Thompson and Weddle's draft he responded by proclaiming that it would be a fifteen-day shoot (a normal DS9 shoot is 6 days).
