The story is below Young Adult fantasy fiction now. It's like a comic book written by a fat girl with autism where everyone gets along and the bad guy isn't very bad. There are no stakes and no reason to like/hate anyone.

All that said, the presentation of Undermine is fucking top notch. Jazzy 20s music, a city made out of scrap, zooming around in a car like it's Crazy Taxi, and the final raid ends up in a tacky casino. They nailed it on every level. Even the goblin delve is pretty cool, easy though.

even wotlk had that weird shit, the whole hardmode-items with better stats than non-hm stuff was really the point where it was a good game to something you played for higher gearscore

Case in point: the last patch was entirely based on the fact she was dumb enough not to dodge an arrow, so her mcguffin artifact got broken. She literally took it to a goblin repair shop and spent the whole patch waiting for it to be fixed, but then some ethereal turned up and claimed he was getting it for her and so the goblin handed it over and he ran off with it. This is the level of dumb she's operating on as the main villain of the expansion.

The biggest difference is that pre-WotLK the world was a place where adventures happened to you depending on what you did. WotLK ruined this slightly, basically tying Arthas directly to the player and making them so important that they needed his personal attention, however it could be passed off as Arthas just hedging his bets.

Cata onwards you're the defacto Hero of your faction and the world revolves entirely around you. Adventure is no longer something you stumble into, the world is constantly ending and only you can prevent it, and all gameplay is specifically about you preventing it.

Is there? I'm not sure FFXIV still has that quantity argument now that WoW major patches are on 5 month schedules. A full new WoW zone with all that comes with it is a lot of content. A WoW raid tier is 8 bosses instead of 4, and always comes with the full difficulty array, unlike Alliance Raids.

Trading Post adding new cosmetics every month, events like Timewalking mean there's always something to do.
A FFXIV major patch is 3-4 hours of linear MSQ, linear dungeon, a trial, and then an alliance raid or a 8-man 4 boss raid (on an 8 month + timer unlike WoW's 8 boss raid tiers).
We waited for over 3 years for field operations content and Crescent Isle is also something you're generally just done with after a day or two once you get your atmas. Besides forked tower which has all these issues they're now trying to fix a month + after.
