The problem is that many bloated AAA games need special infrastructure to play them (Server grade GPUs) and the way things work is that once the contract with the original developers is over, the publisher moves on.
In some instances like Murdered: Soul Suspect, the developer filled for bankrupcy just around the time of release which does not interfere with the Publisher because it is a project they commissioned, even when the possibility for further patches or a sequel is completely off the table in that case.

There are way too many reasons why this does not work.
Anywhere from the original devs not being present, to companies losing the source code already, to the fact that patching old titles is still work that needs to be paid for and the way companies work is that you need to fill in a lot of paperwork to get anything done. There are like several orders that go through different departments if you so much want a measly localization update to fix a grammatical error.

I really don't see the issue with devs releasing server tools once the game reaches end of life. They're not hard to make at all and you can just leave it to the community to host their own servers afterwards. Sometimes it makes me wonder if the people against it are just being ironic or just that dumb. Even if it's ironic what's the benefit on being against something that benefits you no matter what?

Gamers under about 30yo were never exposed to concepts like third-party dedicated servers and listen mode. They've never played a game over LAN, they've never seen a server browser.
Instead their understanding is that, if a game has the tiniest hint of multiplayer functionality, then it relies fundamentally on "the server". They believe that a server costs millions of dollars to run, contains trade secrets that would ruin the company if revealed, and must be continuously updated throughout the game's commercially relevant life.

Without first fixing this misunderstanding, this campaign had no chance of success.
