The game I'm about to recommend isn't GREAT but it really scratched the exact itch I got from MANTLE: Super Hydlide for Sega Genesis
Specifically, at the start of the game your stats are so weak that you can't even carry a full set of gear without getting overencumbered, and the hunger and sleep systems stop you from just moving onto the first dungeon. The start of the game is you waking up, going out of town and just killing the shit out of enemies to get stronger, and to get money drops so you can afford food and shelter. The stronger you get the farther you can explore until you're ready to start the game proper.

It's one of those games that sucks in the right way for me. Your mileage may vary but I'd say to give it a try if you want to grind in a Zelda clone. Pick the Fighter class, it's good and doesn't have any major drawbacks
