Perfect Cherry Blossom (touhou mainline game from like 2002) for example is genuinely a fantastic, well-made arcade shoot 'em up with well-thought out mechanics and stage design. People meme about touhou so much they forget the first few touhou games or so were actually competently made shoot 'em ups and was partly why touhou blew up as big as it did.

All early fandom memes referenced the game and showed indication that fans were, in fact, fans of the game.
