Favorite: Either Lagoon for the music, Feast for the overall design, or Forest for a good mix of both.
Hated: I honestly like them all. I guess Hilltop is a tad bland, and Resort makes me wish we could swim underwater.

As a side note, the fractone theme is too damn catchy. It has some playfulness and a bit of melancholy to it that makes it feel very nostalgic. I love it.

I just got to the tropical resort. There has so far been exactly two instances of minor platforming - that was in the jungle with the rubber rock and a challenge/bonus room at the junction(?) that had you jumping across moving platforms while avoiding auto turrets. In that sense it is worse than Odyssey. I'm still liking it though you are right you do have to turn your brain off quite a bit - sometimes to the detriment of getting banana.

Just reached layer 1000. As someone who though most of Nintendo's output on Switch was great but massively overrated, and thought Odyssey was particularly mediocre, it's the best game Nintendo has put out in at least a decade. Only issues so far are a weaker soundtrack (atleast for the area themes) and the Bananza forms being a little overtuned. Even if using them is optional I still think they could have made them take longer to charge, have some upgrades for that.

The whole game is equally good, and I didn't really "love" a particular layer, just the overall flow and pace of the game and how silky smooth the controls feel.

It took all the best learnings from how Mario Odyssey felt like a more TikTok-paced Mario 64, for zoomerbrains, but it feels somehow less obsessive and just more "do whatever the fuck you want" ish, while also constantly nudging you forward by exploring. And once again, I envy the Mario/Donkey Kong games for story. These storylines feel like classic Nintendo shit done with a higher budget. Why couldn't Zelda BotW/TotK do that too? There was always this kind of simple, charming, but impactful way of doing narrative that happens and pushes you towards the finale of a Nintendo mascot game, and DK Bananza does that too. it has an arc, a few villains, and it keeps those dynamics consistent from beginning to end, so that long stretches of zoomer-gameplay is locked back into place with a story-beat.

I WISH 3D Zelda was like this, at the same time as being open world and 3D Zelda. And I don't understand why Mario or Donkey Kong now have better execution of narrative than friggin Zelda.

Because while that's always been a stupid complaint to begin with, the bananas having more extrinsic value changes how players react to them. The psychological thing that happens with moons for dumber people is that they think that the game having an easy moon is robbing them of some hypothetical challenge the game would've otherwise had, because the moons only serve as a reward by themselves. I liked it from a gameplay perspective, but I hate the plot and the way Nintendo handles story related things.
It would have been better if Pauline was just a different girl, they literally JUST remade Mario Vs. Donkey Kong where Pauline was an adult with modern Donkey Kong.
They could have retconned literally everything and established new lore for DK but nope, Country 1-3 is still canon, yet DK doesn't even acknowledge K.Rool despite being kidnapped by him. Pauline could have said something like

But no, K.Rool doesn't acknowledge DK and DK doesn't acknowledge him.
So we're in this fucking weird place where things are halfway retconned. They could have just not put adult Pauline in Mario Kart World and retconned her for the generation as being a kid.

Why is Pauline underground anyway, and why did Void let her go if they need her voice? Void Kong used the remote from a short distance to turn DK into a Rock, so the same would go for Pauline. Why just leave her?

Then the Banandium Root in general is just a really stupid plot device. It's like the Dragon Balls on fucking crack but with no requirement and it doesn't go away. This thing grants

I just finished the postgame quest. Wasn’t as hard as I wanted it to be, but I still had a good time. Ending the challenge level on fucking Zebra Bananza of all things was really weird lol.

I absolutely adored the game. It’s definitely going to be my favorite of the year regardless of how painful the 100% grinds ends up being. Not sure if it’s my favorite DK game yet, but it’s definitely in the top 3 alongside Country 2 and Tropical Freeze.

The story with Pauline and DK was super simple, but very cute. I find the idea of the grandchildren of DK Arcade’s characters becoming best friends very endearing. I hope we get more games either way these two in the future.

The performance isnt even bad, its 60fps 95% of the time, and while its annoying its 30fps for that ONE (1) boss fight, and in the map screen, the only drops are like 1~5 frames for half a second here and there that you wouldnt even notice. I dont think that one (1) boss and a map screen are even worth mentioning in every single review as if it happens all the time.

Not even close to be done. At first I wasn't sold on the game because it felt like you could just smash your way through all your problems, but they've done a really good job at upping the obstacles and hazards to keep it fresh. I was worried the gimmick would become stale, but somehow it's gotten better as I go. Also discovering chunk tech is fun. The moment I found out about jump-surf-unsurf-chunk jump my enjoyment went up.

I think the "issue" here is that it's a Nintendo game. People are used to Nintendo's 1st party holding stable framerates no matter the cost so for this game to not only sacrifice that but the devs coming out and admitting that yeah it might drop frames sometimes is a big shock and shitpost bait. Same as with game key cards. Sure we all consoom Steam's online-only DRM with no physical releases, sure other consoles are releasing incomplete discs all the time but it's bad when Nintendo does it.

If you're worried about music discs you should be able to get a lot through the postgame content with the Battle Arena and the Bananza Rehearsals. Did the Arena and the Kong Rehearsal (had to go through it three times) and went from 20-30 discs to 80/110
It's hilarious how cruel this game is in regards to discs appearing right at the end of the battle missions. It probably happened to me at least 12 different times throughout the game.
