Red Dead Redemption 1 is superior to 2
>no shitty aim sway that makes you miss on purpose
>not limited to two rifles
>great soundtrack
>better characters
>less tedious hunting
>horses aren't annoying (i.e. they don't run into trees face first or trip over small rocks)
>better honor system, 2's removes missions from your playthrough
>less convoluted story, don't even remember a quarter of 2's story

RDR1 was fairly honest about being GTA Horse but with a bit more character depth. 2 tried to be this bizarre mishmash of open world creative sandbox AND tightly scripted cinematic movie game and the two halves don't harmonise at all.

>no shitty aim sway that makes you miss on purpose
I'm agnostic on this issue. I thought it felt good and the "slowness" people complain about, I was able to work with, and lead, but then again, this was also before I ever concerned myself with multiplayer shooters that are all about the aiming gunplay. I can't really speak on it.
>not limited to two rifles
Seems like a non-issue to me.
>great soundtrack
That's a bullshit thing to add. RDR2 has a fantastic soundtrack. The only parts I didn't care much for were the normal AMBIENT tracks. I think RDR1 had far better, and far more ambient background tracks than what you hear in RDR2, but even then, they weren't total crap. The tracks that play in the different towns during shootouts though are great, when I first did a shootout in Saint Denis and heard the track kick in with the police blowing their whistles I thought it was certified kino. That's one of the better things about RDR2, and the tracks change based on the intensity of the situation, which isn't new for rockstar, but there are some that add so much to the atmosphere when you are sneaking around out of site and the police are looking for you https://youtu.be/xcG_uNYv83I
>horses aren't annoying (i.e. they don't run into trees face first or trip over small rocks)
Total non-issue and I feel like the last time I played they changed the horses to make them more handholdy, and if they did I can only imagine it's because of people like you, in which case, you resulted in the worsening of a game you never even liked so congratulations.
>less tedious hunting

I meant atmospheric. RDR1 also had a neat detail where tracks would change when you would wear the U.S. Army outfit, it would add drums to the tracks. Not that 2 is absent of attention to detail, very far from it.

NTA, and I enjoy RDR2 a lot but the game will take control away from you during missions or if you decide to do something the mission doesn't expect / like. Even in the open world it snatches control from you during ambushes and other encounters. 6

It's inconsistent too, I'm doing a playthrough right now and in the part where you arrive at Rhodes and have to chase down some prisoners to get deputised there's a set piece where you fight a guy unarmed (the mission says not to kill any of them) on the top of a train carriage. I ran up to the guy and missed the prompt or something, and for some reason Arthur decided to draw his sawn-off and blow the guy's head off instead of just punching him. It worked the second time6 I think the devs do this stuff on purpose. When you're just roaming around hunting and exploring it's bliss.

>The horse movement in 2 is absolutely shit
I legitimately have never understood this complaint and even less so when it is brought up in conjunction with the first game. The horses in the first game are terrible comparatively, there's no fine movement at all, there's plenty of times where you find yourself being unable to move the horse because there isn't an animation for it at a certain speed.

2's horses control so much better at every speed, I genuinely not only think the horses are fine in 2 I think they're great, it feels fantastic riding them

It's all a matter of approach.
John doesn't have any character development either, but that's fine because that's not what the game is going for. John hadbhai character development before the story began and the thematic around it is the meaning of redemption and forgiveness in a wider, social context.
RDR2 is just a lot simpler. Arthur was a bad guy, is faced with death and now seeks some form of personal redemption. There's nothing wrong with it as a story, but it's very uncomplicated. Unlike John's redemption, which ties in the The themes of the death of the old west, centralization of power security in civilization vs freedom in wilderness, it's just a standard morality story that could fit anywhere.

I disagree, the horses have a lot lore sway and weight in 2 and the different in breeds and stats really can feel different.
In they're mostly the same and feel very mechanic.
I don't really mind the limitations for hunting because it fits pretty well with everything around it, being deliberate and slow. You have to wander around, hear for sounds, plant some lure, pick the right ammo. 2's realistic slowness is only egregious when it clashes heavily with the unrealistic aspects of the game, like those movie shootouts where Arthur is expected to shoot 300 people alone.
The superior environments help a lot too. RDR2 has maybe the best wilderness in any game I've ever seen. You walk off the path and cities and you can truly get lost in those forests and creeks and meadows, all teaming with life.

The horse will literally wrestle control away from you if you ride it near a tree/trees. There have been instances of me riding one between two trees that aren't even that close to each other but the horse still does its correction bullshit (which is made worse because people who can actually control the damn thing are punished for implementing their mechanical skill to avoid a collision by this) and the damn thing brains itself on a thin tree I would have outright avoided if it didn't try to tardwrangle me. I can only assume this is some sort of retard proofing or lingering effect from how the horse drives itself in that cinematic ride mode feature or whatever but the fact that I can't fucking turn it off so that I can actually ride my horse through middling terrain with confidence that my inputs are respected is horrible.

Freeing Micah from Strawberry
The Balloon
The Federal prison breakout.
They're all enraging because they're the clearest and most blatant piercing of your suspension of disbelief. The game proposed realism in its gameplay and wants to take it's story seriously but it's impossible to hear Dutch's or Hosea's pleas about law enforcement chasing the gang when Arthur and Sadie and Micah can just massacre hordes of policemen and citizenry and face basically zero consequences for it.
Sadie being a Mary Sue that spits on the game's themes and is constantly shilled universe also makes her the most unbearable character Rockstar ever created

But at least they pour a ton of passion into their games, it's not like they're cynical cash grabs like a Ubisoft title or something they genuinely do go above and beyond, the compromise is that they spend hundreds and millions of dollars on their games so they want to make sure that Fifa gamers can play them

Good routes should be sub-optimal, but with a greater pay-off at the end if you suffer through it, whereas bad routes should be the optimal min/max path, but it makes everything grim and miserable.

Dishonored kinda follows that path but the issue is that evil is a lot more fun because of the powers but less because o of the moral faggotry.
I think inFamous actually had the best approach to it, despite all the memery for it.
Evil path has you be fucking evil and you get evil powers that reinforce destructiveness
Good is morally rewarding and you get powers that are more pinpoint accurate and healing.

I enjoy the freedom in the Saints Row 2 missions. The game sets an objective with a clear path to follow, but nothing stops you from rolling in with a tank for chaos. Meanwhile, Rockstar has an obsession with parameters. If Micah and Dutch died, who gives a shit if it's not lore friendly? If I cared about lore, I wouldn't be chucking dynamite.

To be fair on Dishonored, many of the powers have non-lethal applications, and you can get away with a lot of bloodshed and morally questionable deeds before you tip the scales into High Chaos.

Infamous actually does do karma really well. People only criticised it because the โ€œbinary moralityโ€ trend in vidya was on its way out.

You can have an end game save with John, or Arthur before the point of no return.
And really they barely add anything besides cosmetics, you're never going to notice that 0.5% boost to your cores.
It annoys me more that you can't complete all the challenges as arthur. And the last couple of legendary animals are gated behind the end game location, and one of those legendary animals is the one that gives you the trinket that makes it so meat doesn't spoil on your horse (or drastically reduces the speed it goes bad), which would have been really helpful when you needed to drag animal corpses back to camp. But the only reason you'd do that as John is to sell to a butcher for the 2.50, when you've probably got the 40k or whatever from the final mission. And I know with my arthur I left as much money at the aberdeen pig farm for John to pick up.
I wish there was more shit to do at beachers hope. You get some chores that let you sell milk and eggs in town, and it advances the clock to 4pm, for 8 dollars. So it literally just wastes half your day. And the camp had a lot of people, but the homestead just has abigail, john, and uncle, and their dialogue pool is pretty shallow.
There should have been more upgrades you could do for the house, an ability to donate meat and pelts and valuables for the house fund, or whatever. Something that gives you some further investment in the place. And occasional shit to do on the farm, like going hunting or fishing with jack, or going into town with uncle.
My favorite part of the game was all the ambient camp shit where the characters get fleshed out with diegetic exposition. And Beecher's Hope just feels so dead and static.

John gets a lot of character development in RDR2 going from a bratty angsty child to someone who matures and accepts some responsibility for the people that should matter most. But John in both games is a shithead who tends to solve every problem by just shootan doods after asking politely fails.
He also gets arthur's journal, and continues to grow as a person in the years between the end of 2 and the start of 1.

>because the โ€œbinary moralityโ€ trend in vidya was on its way out.
I never understood this complaint. If you have a morality system in your game then it's gonna be binary, it has to be either evil or good. What sort of moral system do people expect that tackles the complexity of ethics and morality?

People were mainly complaining about the binary morality system that BioWare popularised in KOTOR 1 where your choices are either โ€œbe Jesusโ€ or โ€œeat babiesโ€ with next to no options in between. It worked in KOTOR because thatโ€™s how Star Wars morality canonically works, but then lots of other devs started copying it (like Bioshock for example). It works for Infamous as well because itโ€™s meant to be a homage to superhero comics/capeshit, but that particular nuance seemed to fly over peopleโ€™s heads.

I think the tide started shifting when people found themselves being impressed by Fallout New Vegasโ€™ reputation system, although itโ€™s ironic because that game also uses the same karma system that Fallout 3 does. And contrary to what some people say, karma in NV does affect some things.

He's cartoonishly evil and a completely unserious character. The only reason I like him is because his actor is pretty great.
I believe the original plan was for him to have been more complex, still a violent douchebag but loyal to a fault to Dutch, the gang and the criminal lifestyle. The conflict between him and Arthur was thus about Arthur rethinking the morality of their deeds vs Micah who's committed to the life.
