I started a new run of Nioh to give Odachi a proper try and I'm conflicted on it.
On one hand the big signature of the weapon seems to be to do long strings that seamlessly weaves in multiple stances, yet the high Ki cost makes this unfeasible.
On the other I find the combo enders to be far more useful than the skills that introduce an attack from another stance, yet doing that feels like going against the weapon's gimmick and what makes it stand out.

The UI and overall style looks like absolute dogshit, objectively. Why they're leaning so hard into the scifi aspects is beyond me.

The second thing might turn out not to be the case once we actually get to play it, but something about the animation and movement speed of everything feels off in all the gameplay videos so far, sped up or something.

He has just gained his fanbase and reputation through sheer accomplishments really. He does have some emotional beats and other characters he cares about to build his story and motivation, but when it comes down to it people like him because he is just fucking invincible and always wins no matter what, he doesn't show off or try hard to look stylish, but gets the job done with brutal efficiency. It feels satisfying to watch him succeed because the games are notoriously difficult, so seeing him brush those challenges off without breaking a sweat amplifies the "fuck yeah that was me I did it I'm so cool" factor. He's the "silent hero journey boy" archetype. He's a badass that lets his actions do the talking. There's a lot of people that resonate with that, no quips, no whining, just cutting niggers in half. I would say a big part of Ryu's personality is also his moveset. I will say though if you're going for highest rankings with the handicap talismans as opposed to just wanting the specific challenge, the "best" ones are the no checkpoints and no healing at checkpoints. He's also clearly never played Blasphemous or Blasphemous 2 because he thinks The Game Kitchen are just metroidvania devs when the reason TN went to them was because those games had pretty satisfying combat and great bosses. Blasphemous 2 specially had really good weapon mechanics for a game in general, not just a 2D one.

Use heavy attacks including Flying Swallow to break their shield, they're fully open to the next hit afterwards including launchers. Pressure and bait them into dodging with strings and punish them either by anti-airing, FSing their grab (they count as shielded during it) or just adding up the damage from other hits. Keep Cicada Surge in mind to stay safe and also punish their counters. Their attempts at recharging their shield can be punished heavily with running strings and other moves that catch their knockback, you can even take the moment to charge UTs, just be wary of the others who will come after you. Don't underestimate how useful the bow can be, it can set up air combos quite easily and effectively. Always aim to cut their arms rather than their legs, and try to never let an alchemist go without being SoB'd, they still give a ton of Ki on an OT but their SoB is very easy to react to and very rewarding, potentially letting you kill several of them though keep in mind their shields do block it.

You need to be playing extremely poorly and badly managing Ninpo for a checkpoint to be that much of an issue, and that boss is the only one with multiple checkpoints throughout. This game will unironically be too hard for the souls-slopper zoomers. They will set it on the hardest difficulty (cause their ego won't settle for anything less) and enemies will kill them in 2-3 hits, but they won't be used to such speed and enemies swarming you after years of souslop where most of the fights against anything faster than the shittiest zombie enemy are strictly 1 on 1. As far as I am concerned I feel like 1 is when Ryu is in his early 20's, 2 is mid 20's, 3 is late 20's and 4 looks like Tokyo has become even more advanced since 2 which already had crazy multilayered suspended highways and some clear GitS 95 influence when you looked at the backgrounds, and flying cars, so I feel like he's in his mid 30's in 4 given the state of Tokyo. I think the gap between 3 and 4 is bigger to also reflect the real life gap between 3 and 4 being so gap.
I think it's probably around 15~ years. That's my headcanon for now unless 4 is more specific.
