As much as I don't like several things NG4 is going for, the lack of all these girls is not out of norm, the vanilla release for all mainline NG titles follow a formula: Ryu alone + new cover girl assisting him. The girls were brought over on expanded releases and have been so since Sigma.

NG4 has replaced Ryu with Yakumo and the cover girl this time is Seori, the formula still applies. Although Ayane was a consistent minor cameo even on vanilla releases, if she doesn't appear for at least a few seconds the formula will be broken a bit.

NG2's bosses were a big step down from NGB, Black has some legit good ones like Murai, Alma, Doku and Doppelganger. NG2's Greater Fiends were honestly a big fucking disappointment despite their cool designs. They even tried giving Ryu his own Vergil with Genshin but he's total wasted potential, shows up a few times out of nowhere for a few unremarkable fights, and then at the end the game expects you to feel sorry for him with Ryu pressing F to pay respects kek

Everyone seems to have a different criteria for a soulslike. Different games play differently, nothing is quite like ninja gaiden but onimashu is certainly closer to ninja gaiden than it is to puzzle fighter. And tekken is often called a 2.5d fighter by its own player base because it doesn't play like virtual fighter. Even among 2d fighting games Granblue Fantasy Versus and Dragon ball have massively different appeals. When there isn't a solid base to start these conversations, yeah I think you have to be pretty dumb to get invested in them.

You can play the Sigma version of 1, it's the most easily available. Black is the most highly praised one though
If you just want to play the games before 4 then pick up the master collection and if you have money to spare get 2 Black or mod Sigma 2. Maybe even consider emulating the original release of 2 if your pc can.
