Yes. You need to learn about 20,000 Japanese words to have a good understanding. No other way to do that except anki. Keep in mind it will take probably 1500 hours to learn the language so if you decide to learn Japanese first ask yourself if it's worth 1500 hours of your time. To put that in context, it's about 2 hours a day over 2 years.

Anki can be used whenever you feel you need flashcards to memorize something. you could use it to memorize the alphabet for starters, you could also memorize some basic vocab to get started, but try to start reading and listening to simple stuff as soon as you can so you get more context and idiom. learning a language is just getting a ton of input from reading and listening until it sinks in, while doing some grammar study to help, and eventually practice speaking when it's finally possible to string something together naturally
this wouldn't be simple to start with but these Easy Russian and similar channels are pretty good for getting a lot of content of people speaking normally, you can probably find lots of other stuff on youtube too

You can understand a lot of sentences without understanding what every word means. Sometimes you can understand while knowing zero words. And then your brain can work backwords and get the meaning of the word. That's what happened when you learned your first language.

I'm ESL and I have a 9 in IELTS. I learned English only through Osmosis since I was around 13. I didn't know what words like "Vowel" or "syllable" or "adjective and so on mean until very recently, but I could communicate like a native and write long, sophisticated essays and understand classic English literature effortlessly. No one taught me. I reached fluency within only 3-4 years.
I've been learning Japanese recently and I think I will never be fluent in it. It's complexity is vast because of the Chinese characters. I plan on learning a 4th language once I finish reading RTK.

Ok, I'm getting into anki now for japanese, but I honestly don't see how one can spend the majority of their time in it for learning a language.
Like, take Kanji. For now doing a 1.5k deck, but so far I spend the least on Anki a day. I just kinda go through my deck, press "ok" when I kinda get it in like 30 minutes, but if I actually want to solidify any of the shit I usually learn how to write it down, stroke order/ use programs to actually test it instead of flashcards (like Kakugo) and each kanji becomes much more recognizable.
Do you mean you just really just forgo that and keep adding more and more vocab a day? Also, with how Anki is designed, would you always have to go on top after "completing" a set?

Only using it for junk you don't even like is probably not the best use of time.
Pianos a common one for what I hear people wish they had gone and learned instead but like, how many times a day would you really be belting out piano tunes, only use of a skill is how much you intend to use it.
The helicopter thing wasn't just out of my ass - I got my aviation certs/RPL and I've flown maybe 4 times in 6 years, complete fucking waste of time.
But going back to play PC98 games has been great for my artfaggot tendencies.

Anki is for after you get over the initial hump of telling basic kanji apart, just like it's for after you learn hiragana and katakana.
People endlessly debate how to achieve "telling kanji apart," and how much time to devote to it, but not doing that first is going to cause massive problems once you're elbow-deep into a vocab deck and they're all still squiggly lines to you.
So you either take one of the core deck variants as a basis from like day 3, or you take a few weeks to study kanji in isolation. No need to do all of RTK like the old days, but maybe the first couple grades of Joyo kanji would be helpful, just giving each Kanji a name so you can recognize it later.
Studying radicals and giving them names is also helpful. Lots of ways to do it, but the key is to not get bogged down for months and months without learning a single real word of Japanese.

Well hey, anon, it's not too late to grab a midi keyboard and spend a while practicing scales in a DAW, I know a fair few people who started fairly late.
And just emulation lol. Prices on PC98s skyrocketed to the 1k+ level and are only just starting to come back down to the 600s, so I'll probably wait to Christmas to grab one. Kinda need one because like maybe 60% of titles even work with emulators. Had a friend in the states who had one which was fun.

was totally unaware of this. why don't they all work? are the emulators not 1:1 with the hardware

Well you know, it's like the old Dreamcast or Xbox emulator scene, there's a few attempts that get a few games working and then they get bored. Even the "best" one when dead a decade ago now, Neko Project 2. And then it gets forked and each fork is like one step forward two steps back.
By like the old Dreamcast or Xbox scene, where they went dead for 20 years before suddenly getting Flycast and Xemu, who knows, never know when there'll be a new one out of the blue.
And I'll be careful, cheers anon, have a good one.

Anki provides fake memories that will not stay with you. You will not remember the times when you were rifling through thousands of Anki cards pretending to learn.
But see/hear a word once in the wild in a memorable context, and it's with you forever.
Your "efficiency" is a meme when there's a lot more to words than just seeing a dictionary definition or even a screenshot of where you saw it.

RTK is what I credit for making me give up on learning Japanese for 10 years, because it's a few months of completely worthless study that you can do nothing with at the end, all you've done is learn pointless keywords that might have nothing to do with the actual kanji.
Do kanjidamage if you think individual kanji study makes the most sense. At least then you learn readings, and when you're done you can fucking read.

I don't get the idea of individual useless kanji study. You just look at the kanji in vocab, and then when you get a similar you just look for the difference and go "oh that's the difference". You don't need a whole separate course on telling pictographs apart, just fucking look at them.

It's not worthless at all, and you cover a ton of ground with it.
One of the most difficult things for a learner of kanji that's not Chinese (or to a lesser degree Korean) is that when you are learning a character, you are typically learning
1. its meaning
2. one reading
3. another reading (plus more if it has situational uses)
4. this glyph that you don't really understand how to parse
Heisig targets the hardest part of this, the glyph, and gives you a comprehensive system for working through them that builds into a fast, efficient system for you to incorporate more characters as you work through it. By the end, you can easily parse, categorize, and mostly even understand their meaning (with some notable exceptions).
Once that, literally the hardest part of reading a kanji is in the bag, the rest comes easy. It's amazing how quickly you burn through vocabulary, and it's worth every minute invested if you're actually serious about engaging with written Japanese beyond children's comics and VNs.
Sorry it didn't work for you.

It made the most sense to me 10 years ago when I started learning, if it doesn't seem like a good option to you, then great. I liked the idea of constructing a more concrete mental picture of radical buildup, even if at the end of the day it didn't add anything, it didn't hurt.
Now, there are methods you can use that absolutely will hurt you, but individual kanji study isn't one of them. It's just a longer way to get to the same place.
>>718659732
That's nice, I learned all of those things at once with a better system focused around mnemonic theory and self-creation. I don't think there's any benefit to learning half of the information and missing off the most important parts, which are reading and meaning. Learning "keyword" (which is sometimes meaning but often not) and "shape" is half the battle, then having to go away and tie keyword to meaning and reading somewhere else is fucking stupid when you could just frontload enough to get reading.

RTK is for long-term gains.
If you can remember the kanji, you can immediately look it up with an IME and have an easier time remembering the definition.
Anki is the exact opposite, it gives you short-term gains and tries to transform those gains into long-term gains through spaced repetition.

Very close to agreeing with you here. "Recognize" is the correct term, however. If you've been introduced to a word and are seeing it regularly, you are much, much more likely to recognize it in the wild. Fuck the other guy you're arguing with, but there is absolutely nuance here.

Yeah that. You need to grind a bit first to start understanding even simple texts. If you know nothing you won't have context to figure it out either. It's not very fun to not understand and starting with like actual children's picture books is not either. You want to get to something you'd enjoy at least a bit a d once you start getting it it goes form there easily.

I assume Chinese and Japanese is because of the effort to become literate. The actual languages are fairly simple grammatically and vocab will be just as alien as most cat 3. I suppose Chinese has tones too so there's that.
Korean uses an alphabetic script though and is it that much harder than any random exotic language to deserve getting singled out?

the ใ sound is one of the only sounds in japanese thats pronounced differently depending where it is in the word. for the words you listed it's the third one in picrel where you make it in the back of your throat, like how in the example "pink" notice how your tongue doesn't actually hit the roof of your mouth like it would for most "n" sounds. it's just because it would be awkward to pronounce the words without a really slow "GE N IN" or something, so it turns more into "geyin"

I'm so grateful to my younger self for choosing to learn Japanese, since it familiarized me with this software. I use it for everything and it's an incredible way to learn something new every single day without having to put much effort in or find the motivation to do it. Soon I'll have all the african capitals and the entire periodic table memorized and I've also got decks related to nordic runes, korean hangul, morse code, famous artworks, recognizable buildings and recently classical music and coding in bash.
All of this is probably inferior to reading a book, but I suck at reading and this is leagues better than doing nothing.
My favorite is the Japanese history deck I found, which has thousands of cards and is fully in japanese, so that I'm technically also immersing.

Can confirm. Studying Anki in a vacuum isn't really learning. When doing reviews and struggling to remember a word, your brain searches for... words you grinded in Anki. When consuming native content, you don't have that luxury, and have to be prepared to encounter any word. Plus, words learned this way are much more memorable than words "learned" through some flashcard program. The 2nd or 3rd time I encounter new words, I can always recall "oh yeah, I saw that word in
, it means this" and it sticks with me better.

If you build your own decks, yes. But too many beginners get trapped in Core 2k, Core 6k, isolated kanji study etc, and then get addicted to "streaks" and "progress" as if they're earning achievements in a videogame, and post their Anki stats pages online for bragging rights. We call these people "Anki drones."
Pic related didn't try to read his first manga until after 4 entire years of Anki study, and then whined about how difficult it was. I had finished reading 100+ volumes in that time.

I value hobbies a lot, more than what most people think they should be, for me, itโs about the connections with your inner self. the true essence and achievements of life. for this reason, I take hobbies very seriously.
in truth, they are the most important things in life, and I do everything around hobbies to support the hobbies, not the other way around, they are something spiritual, the pure essence of the gods of freedom to realize things according to your own will. itโs when your true self manifests.
If you think spending 50000 hours shitposting on 4chan is more valuable than learning something to enjoy your hobby better, then it canโt be helped.

always listen to both examples after you gave a wrong answer
atamadaka should be easily distinguishable from a flat word soon
shadow the example words too, repeatedly if necessary

I thought that learning kanji radicals helped as it's easier to piece together what a kanji is. Immersion is where kanji is really sticking for me. Seeing the same word in another context besides the exact same sentence over and over or on their own brings them to life.

you're a fucking retard moron. barely anyone teaches about ๅฝขๅฃฐๆๅญ, ๆ็ฌฆ and ้ณ็ฌฆ. hell, you'd be lucky enough to hear about the rikusho. or the 5 main categories compounds fall into (similar meaning, opposites, former modifies latter, latter is object or complement of former, former negates latter)
you have no idea how bad classes and courses are in the west
keep wasting your time with useless crap meant to keep you trapped in a bucket forever

As much as you find sustainable with the time you are willing to spend on it. I found 10 way too much. It's sort of okay at first but as you are adding to the pool you end up with way too many reviews to internalize. I'm at 5 now. For now I manage but sometime there's an easy day with words I already sort of knew and sometimes it's 5 completely new ones that I have a hard time remembering even in the moment.

Probably nobody is going to give a shit, but here's some random unsolicited advice in regards to learning a language. I don't know Japanese (I learned German, Russian plus a little bit of Korean) but what I am going to say will be universal
The two most important things with regards to learning a language are the following
> A) What's you get is proportional to the time you put in:
An obvious fact, but retards constantly forget about it. You can have an IQ of 300, but if you are not able to routinely study with at least some active intent (yes, just watching anime doesn't count) you are not going to progress. I don't like Anki too much (see point B) but the reason why so many people swear by it is that it gives you the discipline to study regularly. When learning a language you should be like a monk performing a ritual everyday.
> B) Your study should be well balanced:
Think of it like having a healthy diet. Don't be the gym rat that forgoes veggies and eats everyday a kilo of chicken (drilling words/kanji). There is an hierarchy on what you should focus on, that is: listening > reading > output. However every area is important and you should never disregard it. Yes nigger, that means that even if you plan on just reading incest hentai you'll have to do listening practice, get over it.
As for a practical roadmap the TL;DR is go to
https://fsi-languages.yojik.eu/languages/FSI and drill the fuck out of the listening comprehension and all the other exercises. Once you are starting to get a somewhat intuitive grasp of the language supplement the lack of reading with a graded reader and do that alongside the FSI course. When those are done get a big fucking grammar book and go through it until you can recognize every grammar patter. Finally do intensive vocabulary acquisition by getting a bilingual book with an easy to find audiobook. Read original, then translation then original. Keep rereading a chapter until you can read the original in one go.
