Graphics - Without anyone telling me, I already knew this was an Unreal Engine game.

Setpieces - They all feel the same and blend together over time.

Story - I have no idea. I made it past Act 1, but I have no desire to play the rest of the game. Nothing remotely interesting or unpredictable has happened. None of the characters are relatable, although the girls are hot.

And no, it does not get better. I know this because no game gets better, they either suck from the start or they are good from the start.

Anyone who thinks this game is good should play FFIX or FFX and experience the TRUE role-playing game.

If a twist getting spoiled ruins the story for you, it's a bad twist. I went into Silent Hill 2 knowing the twist, and basically the whole story just through osmosis and people never shutting up about it, but it's still such a great story that I enjoyed experiencing it all the way through.

It's a shitty story, told in the most linear movie-game way. And then on top of it, it does the insulting "choose ending A or B" thing, which actual RPGs have found ways around for fucking decades. Actually, play a real CRPG instead of wallowing around in Japshit if you want a higher writing standard. Planescape: Torment gets thrown around as a meme a lot, but it still mogs the absolute shit out of most RPGs. The only other game that comes close in terms of sheer dialog depth and choice is Disco Elysium. In some ways I think it surpasses it. Both are better in every single way than E33.

CRPG's have this issue where there's a lot of writing, but most of it is pretty bad, and it's a bad use of the medium. If you want to write a book, write a book. Video games should combine good writing with good direction, pacing, music, gameplay, art etc. and E33 does that in a very good way. Sekiro's are dependent on things like placement (which this game doesn't have), your loadout, i-frames, and being proactive, balancing attack and defense. All things this game doesn't have. Why? The dodge barely gives you any more frames, fucking up is equal risk, so you should just practice your parry. Parrying is beyond OP, it's the only way to consistently do counter-damage. It's also not hard to consistently parry. The most negative review I saw on YouTube was from a dude who maxed out his damage early (like I did, because the pictos are broken) and absolutely railed every single boss by just parrying (like I did). Did I die occasionally? Yeah, you're supposed to. There's no other way to memorize certain attacks, and anyone who says there is, is simply lying. It's part of the meta, which is why the game gives you save points EVERYWHERE. The whole "souls" exploration thing is a huge lie, it autosaves every time you swap a loadout in the menu.

FF9 definitely aged poorly. Despite having 4 disks, it had very little content, because it had to keep duplicating the world. Nobody's story was really explored. There were only like 5 truly impactful places you visited on the main story. The art style world, and motifs of the game were excellent, as was the music, but the story, nonexistent character development (and frankly just shallowness to begin with), and obvious padding of playtime with needlessly drawn out combat dragged it down a lot. The game doesn't need a remaster, it needs a full on remake. Not all FFs need it, but FF9 absolutely does.

since we're here there are some really good things about E33 like art direction and music but the writing is a recovered abortion, and it struck me why recently. Its all observational: character walk into a room, "there is a thing in this room", they see a big enemy "wow a fucking big enemy" I would never laud a Hazbin accusation at the game but it feels like it leans that way sometimes when really uncalled for. None of the characters react realistically to their situation, especially the intro when everyone dies and they're just celebrating, not to mention the NPC dialogue feels straight up AI generated. Anyway I'm preaching to the choir here, you all know they got her off some reddit forum or whatever but additionally to that I'm positive she lacks an internal monologue.

I read books as well and you know what, E33 seems more complicated because it makes you jump through more hoops like the mystery in the beginning, finding out the reveal, and changing perspectives to Alicia, but its all surface level shit, there isn't any interesting insights into the human condition, it doesn't cause someone to view the world differently, the only thing it offers is the escapist question at the end which isn't even original to the story, its the shit basement dwelling loners have to struggle with every single day. It's just for entertainment which is fine, but for it to be ranked higher than all the other stories in jrpg canon it doesn't make a compelling argument for itself.
