Set proximate goals ('make a single room'), break problems down (instead of 'I want a character that can run, jump, and walk', distill it down to 'Get character model in game,' 'get character model to move on one axis when I hit a certain key'. And you need a shitload of discipline to stay with it, because gamedev is a tremendous pain in the ass. (But a fulfilling one, unless you're a shitbag trying to make lazy slop to cash in on a trend or meme.)

Black Souls, Fear and Hunger, Hylics Dont Look Outside proves that you dont need to be a good game developer or even good at making assets, you just need to actually finish the thing you started. You can start whenver and make something good, but only if you want to finish it. There are so many interesting indie projects that have season people behind them, but they are worthless, becuase the projects are abandoned.

Just remember, youre not making the next big hit, temper your expectations, and set reasonable goals.

dusted off my 3rd person shooter prototype
corner peeking is a major problem in those games

Exploring solutions by tweaking camera settings depending on character position relative to walls:
Can adjust the camera position, field of view
Added shaders for blurring stuff at certain distances, and vignetting the appropriate side.
The body rotates so as to hug the wall

Still need to tweak the parameters and iron out the many edgecases but thats my progress so far

If the witch anon actually made a game, then I would say that there are games with good character models at least. But that is only one aspect. The games shown here have bad models, bad character design, bad monster design, bad UI, and bland looking gameplay. Some anons seem to be better than others in one of these aspects, but they are lacking in all the others. Maybe something half way decent could be made if all of /agdg/ combined their efforts to make one game like what happened with Katawa Shoujo, though that was just a VN.

You just seem to be upset at objective reality. Look at the pics posted by the devs in this thread and compare their models to that one. It is clear which is objectively more pleasing to the eye. If there was a dev who was capable of making good looking realistic models then I would point out the obvious fact that the pics look better than the rest as well. However, that is not the case. The anime model is the only one that looks good in this entire thread.

weak from them not being visible/not having that many? if so yeah I need to tweak the particles themselves.

to get on the stepped time, the particles dont play at all. it pushes it to a set time on the particle, then generates a mesh based on how theyd appear at that time, and renders that mesh for X number of frames

so I gotta go in the particles and tweak stuff, since the emission stuff is no longer being utilized. each one has to be generated through script

going to be annoying because I'll have to do this for each and every particle system I have so far. I might just scrap the particle system altogether and generate quads w/ textures for the smoke effects

I make modular pieces in Blender, then import to Unity and use "prefab world builder" (its a paid asset, worth it imo) to make things quickly. It's basically like building homes in The Sims but for game levels.

then for colliders, I have custom editors I made myself. 90% of them are generated through a splines thing that generates collider walls.

for more unique or one-off stuff, I don't make them modular, instead I model in Blender normally and then place it into the world in Unity.

it works, but it takes some pre-planning. something like your pic would mostly need to be done in blender, but then when you wanna add the more generic things to that level, the prefab placement tools will speed it up by a lot.

its basically a tool to speed up parts of level design that dont necessarily need to be that unique

turning stuff invisible might also be a good idea (along with some other visual cue), especially if the default camera is further away and you dont want to narrow the FoV as agressively
This is currently UE 5.5 might port to 5.6

depends, imo its mostly in multiplayer where corners can be exploited.

I'll think about doing outlines, but it might need another camera in the scene to render lines onto transparent objects.

yeah, gotta find or make a texture for the lines part. It's just the default circle shape from the Unity particles system right now.

Been using claude to code my entire game so far to see if it actually could. It sucks at it desu, if I didn't already know how to do everything myself so I could debug the code it spits out I never would have even had models on the screen Though it is nice that I can tell it to write very specific code and alt tab while it does it

Decomp project still progressing. Clouds and wall backs work, rasterizing improved too. All major graphical issues are solved, now it just looks like Whiplash. Also added gamepad support.

Correct. I will however, improve it. As soon as it reaches 1:1 parity with the MSDOS version I will fork and work on extending it. Unlocked framerate, no busy waits, hardware accelerated graphics, infinite draw distance, modern netcode, support for user-made tracks and cars and much more. A new Whiplash era is dawning friend, soon it will become the id Tech 1 of arcade racing.

Depending on the scene/art style surrounding it, it'd either look humorously 'derpy' or scarily rabid, like one-track-mind for chasing the player. I can imagine it being an effective asset.
