Online shopping and overall culture change got worse. Luckily my local mall is still doing very well, but I can't really recreate those christmas season and back to school shopping scenarios since the culture's changed and I'm in my 30s. I still link up with my mom and sisters to walk the mall and go shopping on occasion though, always drop by auntie annes and get a pretzel.

Malls are so fucking gay now. My local mall just feels and looks so empty and pretty much everything is painted white and lit up with white fluorescent lights. There is no sense of abundance, grandiosity, or coziness, it's just a big empty box and all you want to do is just get what you need and go home as quickly as you can because spending time in there somehow makes your senses feel both depraved and overloaded at the same time. Even during Christmas all they really do is put a shitty tree in there and maybe a few other things but that's about it.
Whatever happened to having shit like fountains and literal jungles in there?

I went to two malls as a kid. One got tore down after the Walmart that was basically propping it all up got relocated to a different part of town, causing it to die a slow and painful death.

The other one went through a billion renovations to make it soulless. It's located in the middle of a neighborhood so it was never going to die, but the Zellers turned Target that used to be there was kind of the centerpiece of the mall and once they went out of business there was just this gigantic multi-storey vacant store they couldn't figure out what to do with until they just went fuck it and renovated it into another entrance (that isn't even in a convenient spot for parking so hardly anyone uses it) with smaller stores around it. There also used to be a big water fountain in the main atrium but it got tore out and replaced with a starbucks, and there used to be an arcade but they replaced it with an H&M. Also most of the stores there are exclusively self-checkout now and I hate shopping there because of it.

I dont know why so many retards think pushing for higher profits leads to good outcomes, literally just open a history book or look at the world around you lil nigga.
We're in this mess because a modest profit isn't enough, it needs to keep going higher to please shareholders, that's why the quality of everything has declined massively.
We don't have good fridges that last a lifetime for example because it doesn't make as much money, you need to buy cheap shit made in china that is made to break after x years so you buy a new one. This also doesn't include stuff like washing machines or other shit being made digital, connecting to the internet, selling subscriptions, etc.
The 60s in america was actually the best time to be alive. The profit chasing wasn't as high and the government was actually heavily involved in the economy, even giving you money to buy a house if needed, with strong social programs to help out people that were later gutted.
Capitalism is inherently jewish and will literally take everything from you just to make an extra dollar of profit next quarter

yeah there are a lot of malls in Bucharest, one is within walking distance and two more are short bus rides away.
they first appeared in the mid 2000s and are still thriving. plenty of people shop online now but since the malls aren't hours away like US ones they haven't fallen out yet.

Sup Romaniabro. Took a quick holiday in Bucharest in May because the weather was intolerably shit up here. It was a pleasant place to chill and enjoy the price level, not totally shittered up by mass tourism yet. I feel like exploring Romania more, do people elsewhere in the country know English as well as they do in Bucharest? Maybe gonna check out Brasov and Cluj-Napoca next.

I've got a mall thats like a 10 minute walk from my house, but its always dead anyway so its not really a bother.
I used to pop in there to grab a bite to eat at the food court and just kinda chill when I was out on walks, but the foodcourt is empty and so are most of the stores now, so there's really not much of a reason to go inside.

I'm biased because I did part time work in several malls, but fuck 'em. Way too many malls anyway for how small the city is.

For me it was that one time me and a best friend off mine decided to eat some sushi and while he was completely fine I on the other hand had some allergic reaction or some shit. I don't understand this need to make new stores so gay and uniform. A toy store that I liked changed. Before, you followed a path. The store was organized in a U shape. You started with an open children's area with a huge fake tree 8-9 meters high where you could walk through the middle with monkey toys in the branches, etc. You continued under an arch, an open Lego area where you had a game table and freely accessible bricks in the center, board games, real-size statues of Batman, Pikachu, etc., warm colors. Now, since the rebranding, it's the equivalent of an Amazon warehouse, shitty colors, just straight, parallel rows where you can see the parking lot from the back.

I'm pretty sure every country on Earth has malls. In Helsinki, basically every metro station or bus terminal is in the basement of a mall. It makes it convenient to just pick anything up on the commute home from work. And it ensures a base level of foot traffic so the mall doesn't suddenly die.
When I lived in Philadelphia for a while, every metro station (on the Market-Frankford line) dropped you off in the middle of the GHETTO. You exit the gate and you're just on the street under the El, surrounded by crack houses and junkies. "Oh, you need to make a transfer at Frankford terminal? Good luck and try not to get raped on the way." No wonder everybody has a car.

At first it was sad to walk around only a quarter of the mall and just reminisce of all the fun times I've had with friends in these stores long gone.

Now it's sorta become my happy place I go to whenever I'm feeling down. It's so quiet and eerie but in a good way. I could nap on the benches like a bum and no one will bother me

Somewhat related, but lately I've been on a nostalgia kick for the card game trend in the late 90's. Not for the games themselves, necessarily, but for the weird logic of the game worlds, where the CCG is a massively influential part of the social fabric and economy, having research centers and huge dedicated stores. It's an abstract nostalgia, but I always loved those games and wished I had something like that instead of a dank shithole where I had to listen to neckbeards whine about not being able to play Magic one day out of the week.

Never really got to go to malls when I was young but going to a living one now I don't know how kids would be able to spend time there, there's only luxury stores or services which a teen wouldn't really need anyways (barber, manicures, spa, that sort of stuff).

north point mall always felt a bit dead because the limited memory meant they couldn't render much of a bustling mall, especially not peds past the ped limit, so groups of people were despawning and spawning right in front of you, it felt weird.

the place doesn't even have a proper modeled roof, it's just a black texture to prevent you seeing into the void

The sheer variety of stores in old malls of the late 90s and early 2000s was great. Dead rising 1 is always a fun game to play for this reason. The economy was so good that there could be all sorts of weird stores and some redundant ones that were essentially the same niche like 2 or 3 collectible shops in 1 mall or 2 or 3 stores with swords and armor and crap in them. After you went to one you could go to the next. Great memories with my dad since he and I loved knights and medieval stuff. One mall we went to I believe had 2 gamestops for example which was bizarre but entertaining because they had different inventories. Every mall had something like. KB toys of course and sometimes would also have a Lego store as well plus maybe a target or something with its own respective tou section. So basically an abundance of choice.

we had a movie theater that had a small arcade with like 5 or 10 games in it but then we also had an arcade in the mall as well. so if you were willing to put in the time and footwork to see what was offered around the mall there was a lot in different places that overlapped which was great.

I have a younger brother and some of my favorite memories from when we were growing up was me going with him to the mall and me using my money to find things for him that would make him happy. There was so much to find back then it was impossible not to. He still has some of that stuff today. Good memories of him in the shopping cart and me coming back and handing him something I got him from KB and him freaking out.

Back in 2005 when halo 2 was at its peak relevance I remember walking to our small mall from my HS in hopes that target would have starwars figures and that hot topic would have the halo 2 figures in stock and I would walk like 10 or 15 minutes there and then I would walk home from the mall and that would take like 30 minutes or 40. I had an iPod for music which was all the entertainment I needed for the trip.

We lived in a small town of like 50k people maybe 60k so it was relaxing and there werenโ€™t a ridiculous amount of cars driving around so it was a calm and relaxing experience I remember fondly. this is still my gold standard for how peaceful a town can be. We later moved somewhere with like 250k people in it and I immediately had anxiety and I stopped walking anywhere because everything was like an hour and a half walk away with 1000 cars zipping around.

When? If you were working at a mall in the early 2000s it would have been a totally different vibe and experience in every way possible.

The idea of all stores being clothing stores in a mall is a new thing it wasnโ€™t like that before. even smaller malls used to have random fringe stores in them so there was something for everyone in many malls. today I imagine so many stores in malls struggle that unless itโ€™s something that is super safe itโ€™s just deemed to risky to try.

I think the theory for this phenomenon is that when you eventually sell a store itโ€™s cheaper if it has a generic layout and on the inside and outside. in the last a pizza hut looked like a pizza hut and a taco bell looked like a tacobell and a McDonaldโ€™s looked like a McDonalds, but when they sell these they need to spend money to change it later or else it looks like a McDonaldโ€™s building that now sells shoes or whatever. Obviously this is just money saving shit that eliminates the soul from everything. I assume this applies to the inside of stores as well since this conversation people have is usually about the outside appearance.

That image almost makes me feel like Iโ€™m in my friends old room from HS. my friends and I during middle school and high school would go to his house almost every Friday and weekend to chill as a group. that old computer would have had RuneScape on it, newgrounds, or some music getting downloaded. 5 feet of screen was a tv that we would have been playing resident evil 4 metal gear solid 2 or other games on.

I think a lot of those sorts of stores were ran by people who just loved the thing the store was centered around. in 2003 there was a knight store in my shopping complex by my Safeway which wasnโ€™t even a novelty store but just a store dedicated to anything tangentially related to knights. That guy probably was just obsessed with medieval faires and books and stories about that shit. another year or two later it vanished but then our mall mysteriously had a knight store so I figure he moved it there. my dad got an electronic Excalibur chess set there. it stuck out to me because it wasnโ€™t a novelty shop with medieval stuff it was just strictly medieval and knight themed. I donโ€™t think there is any chance that could succeed or stay afloat today and I think these were just guys passionate about whatever topic they centered their store around and I respect it and miss it more than you can imagine. Peak soul.

I was in HS at the time and he was in grade school. I have him my birthday money to buy as many pack of Pokรฉmon cards as he could like 20. The sad thing that makes it funny? he got like 5 duplicates of a holographic garchomp so it was a total monkey paw moment. We still laugh about it today because it was terrible luck. It wasnโ€™t the fact there werenโ€™t many people there it was the fact that half of the stores were empty so I just walked around semi reminiscing on times with my family while also realizing how much things have changed since the 2000s. Ist mostly because Malls around here aren't that:
>social center where you could hang out with friends and meet new people easily

The average mall in Europe is filled with people hurrying to a specific shop to get something and then leaving. Rural kids hang out in the woods, city kids in the street or actual social spaces. You'd be crazy if you wanted to use a mall to hang out here, thats all.
Malls never reall took off here, they are jsut a large building that agglomerates all the shops thatt normally would be dispersed in the streets around it.

However perhaps (and this is thinking optimistically which almost never is realistic) in 30 years maybe our countries can get their shit together and become so efficient, that excess money is spent making areas for people to go to to spend their time recreationally. Arcades, malls, more libraries, paintball and air soft, more gyms, things of that nature.

Not sure what you and that dude are talking about havent read all the posts but here in America I can say during the late 90s and the entire 2000s malls were 100 percent a social area tou could not only make friends at but a common place to go with your friends and do things with It was absolutely a social thing in many cases . This wss a product of the times I think.

Hell I remember some girl randomly giving me her number there once I didnโ€™t even talk to. If people today are just trying to get in and out of a mall ASAP itโ€™s probably because everyone and everythinf has gotten weird since like 2012

In America, malls basically replaced the idea of the town square, since everything is so spread out that a lot of us grew up only seeing such things in movies. The purpose is ultimately the same, and it should be obvious from the way we talk about it that our mall experience was different from yours. That dumb cunt was either being obtuse or is just retarded.

we're becoming a society of hermits, what's worse is that the internet, the last place people still somewhat interact with people, is that we're not even going to be interacting with humans in 10 to 20 years, the internet will be fully saturated by bots by then and we'll all be completely isolated and truly alone. like how we're nostalgic for those final years of physical places, gen alpha will be nostalgic for those final fleeting years of virtual places when you could still talk and be heard by another human being even if only digitally.

Nothing will ever compare to the atmosphere and hype of being in a mall with your family during Christmas shopping season in the early 2000s. if I had known how fast everythinf was going to disappear I would have savored it much more. There was just something magical to it and I hate when midwits water it down to just being younger. it was literally a different era in history where the culture was completely different and the attitude of the average person was much more friendly and relaxed than today.

economy was booming, people were optimistic and happy. surplus of choice. optimism of what the future would hold. No smart phones. Small amount of the population wss online. No brainrotted on edge divided population. Social media was in a much simpler innocent form even if you used it. people thought things were just going to continue getting better and better. Being around a shit load of people during Christmas who were happier was a great experience in a place with a thousand cool things to discover and find. Today even if a mall did exist that was the exact same until we fix people and make them less shitty it still wouldnโ€™t be the exact same because now you would be surrounded by a bunch of brainrotted internet mindfucked people. Yes I realize that sounds rather dramatic and extreme but itโ€™s the truth regardless. With videogames I think itโ€™s what people have already explained on here a bajillion times that games shifted gradually from a thing made by a couple dudes to something requiring 50 people to something requiring like 200-500 or more people and essentially turned into some massive investment project. So the same sort of risk aversion people would have towards opening new businesses and stores is comparable to how today companies are not willing to risk the tens of millions of dollars that are investing into something that might be too experimental and might flop.

Im sure there are other variables as well but thatโ€™s a big one. A game today xan carry the same investment risk as opening up a new store in town. Never should have ended up like that.

My gut feeling is the death of malls is due to high rents first and foremost destroying the disposable incomes of people who would otherwise go out shopping while also making physical retail a non starter + nonstop financial gangbang on the working class since the 2000s

This coupled with E-Commerce going from a novelty to normal in less than a decade ended the mall era

Well, Ukraine I think is just plain-old geopolitics. US sphere of influence expanding across western europe into eastern europe and russia responding in kind. When an effective vassal state gets overthrown and the new government does a total 180 and starts cozying up with a nation state that leads a military alliance whose mission statement is to curb stomp you into the ground you'd be pretty dumb to just sit there and watch it happen.
Gaza is pretty par for the course. I think that attack in october was a false flag. Given the sophistication of the mossad's intelligence network I refuse to believe that they were just just caught completely off guard and unable to respond, and it being a mere coincidence that they were able to so effectively capitalize on it. It looks like a move straight out of the israeli handbook.
So it was planned, and if you ask why they did it, why not? They might have decided that was an opportune time with the pearl clutchers already tiring themselves out in ukraine, but ultimately they had already been slowly carrying out that colonization/conquering of palestine for decades hence so maybe they just saw an opportunity to get it done a bit faster. Given their recent "fuck it we're just going to annex gaza" I think even they were surprised at how limp wristed the international response was. Here in australia we've been reasonably immune to the american trend of treating jews like a protected class but recently that seems to have changed with some really bizarre events taking place. It seems like a far cry from the "holomodor 2: electric boogaloo".

Yeah Iโ€™m hoping these places go out of business soon in thr next few years. I would compare it to McDonaldโ€™s where McDonaldโ€™s and similar fast food chains had the selling point of being cheap food you could buy when you didnโ€™t have time to make food. today you are almost paying low end or mid end restaurant prices for the volume of food tou get from tacobell or McDonaldโ€™s and now people are saying โ€œoh we donโ€™t know whatโ€™s happening people are buying fast food anymoreโ€ and itโ€™s because it priced itself out of its niche that it was useful for. same applies to thrift stores where they are charging you so much there is no reason to go because there is a better selection online with better prices and deals to be found for USED items.

I think what would be really cool would be some kind of thing like VR chat you can fuck around in with your IRL friends but it would be themed like a mall and it would be online so you could run into other olayers and people as well. It wouldnโ€™t be the same in anyway at all but I think it would be fun to do every now and then. It would also be cool if you could hold and rotate items and buy them through Amazon or something and have them delivered to your house. But you would need some kind of ways to fuck around as well like the ability to climb things or throw objects or ride a skateboard. If you go to a digital store with fake lightsabers you need to be able to fight your friends with them and make a mess in the aisle.

Part of the reason why people donโ€™t go outside much anymore is increasingly every few years there is nowhere to go. Take the 90s for example you and the family or you and your buds would go to blockbuster for some movies or games. thatโ€™s gone. Now you can just stream. or download game on your console or pc. Malls are increasingly barren so you are better off just going on eBay or Amazon. Why go to the music store when you can buy your albums online digitally or order them physically? chicken or the egg situation because some people like those stores and prefer going. but with less business they go away.

I still see it often in my dreams, the way it was, in the 80s and early 90s. And I wonder why there are some many "backrooms" type of games, yet none of them take place in malls?

From my experience my town has a whole of plazas so people go to their nearest one instead of going to the mall.

Do you mean malls like in OP, or just a line of stores lined up but not inside a building? Because where I live I have a lot of the latter and 2 of the former, one of which is the largest in the country.

Nah man, there's no way they'd ever put people on some universal income. If we lose our job to automatization, they'll just let us starve. By now I know how it works.

Bros. Iโ€™m so glad to have experience 90s internet. It was magical. I remember even late 2000s internet when I was being a fake normalfag and going out to bars and clubs with people I barely knew and got along with, and just wanting to come home and vidya instead. Everyoneโ€™s sad that itโ€™s gone, but Iโ€™m just glad to have experienced one of the most kino eras in movie/vidya/music before everything went to shit.

The local mall in my town will be demolished in the next ten years. I can already see it. Every year, they close down a whole area of the mall and the actual accessible area gets smaller and smaller. Thereโ€™s also less and less people which is weird because our town has been growing quite steadily. I like to visit the food court to eat at the shitty local joints there every other weekend. I know I canโ€™t save the mall single-handedly but Iโ€™ll hate myself a lot more if I donโ€™t at least try to. Man, Iโ€™m gonna miss malls when theyโ€™re gone

>we're becoming a society of hermits, what's worse is that the internet, the last place people still somewhat interact with people, is that we're not even going to be interacting with humans in 10 to 20 years, the internet will be fully saturated by bots by then and we'll all be completely isolated and truly alone. like how we're nostalgic for those final years of physical places, gen alpha will be nostalgic for those final fleeting years of virtual places when you could still talk and be heard by another human being even if only digitally.

Something will replace it. People have a desire for interaction and communication. They'll find some venue for it.

But it is a shame about the internet. For an outsider it was one if the few places for ke to find like minded people. Then it became gentrified and centralized by social media. And now it's turning into some dead, posthuman wasteland altogether. Really thought we had a good thing going there, up until the mid 10's

Too many to count, but they all look exactly the same. They are all in dense population area so no dead mall like in the US, except when the land is designed for new condo or something like that.

Did any of you guys ever read the book snow crash? I donโ€™t remember s lot about it it was just okay but the general premise was that many people were poor and lived and interacted primarily in cyberspace in a vr environment. I can see things becoming like this in the next decade or two where people have fewer and fewer fun places to go and just interact with their friends in cyberspaces like vr chat or something like that. Something like a much more advanced second life. I can imagine the mindset being well where is there to go? May as well just go somewhere fun together in this virtual environment we talk to eachother in every day anyway.

it's psychological warfare
when you're surrounded by beautiful, colorful architecture and warm cozy lighting, you feel at home, at ease
when you're surrounded by featureless, bland monotone blocks and angles and cold, sterile lighting, you feel uneasy, unable to relax, constant fight or flight.
It's deliberate.
Places like malls and food places used to be designed to be warm and inviting to make you comfortable and at home while you were there, even the places people worked were like this
now everywhere is designed induce persistent tension and thus fatigue
it is all very deliberate psychological engineering designed to contribute to the total level of designed misery you exist with on a day to day basis
