Consoles are expensive, and have less worth compared to PC, as console can only be used for gaming and a PC has multi-use its better value. Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo all require subscriptions to access multiplayer while PC has had it free for 30 years. Microsoft has tried to put subscriptions on PC and its pretty much failed everytime except for Game Pass.

The last time console hardware did something unique that PC's adopted was the unified shader architecture in the Xbox 360's GPU.
There's now so much overlap between PC and console hardware and software that there's no point to have a console that's limited and less powerful.

This is what I believe has become the most damaging factor for the console market, there's no justification whatsoever for 4 to 8 year old devices to go up in price, they're supposed to be the affordable option compared to PC, but now even controllers not only have become more expensive, but then you get "Elite" versions that can go for up to $100, and that's just criminal. Nintendo is also not excluded from this, despite they own the most affordable consoles in the market, they still refuse to reduce the price of their first party games.

Then there's the GPU market which is its own monster, along the fact that companies have completely forgotten how to optimize games to the point not even high end graphics cards can run games at high settings without suffering performance issues.

Nintendo saw this coming which is why they made the "Switch", Valve knew this too which is why they made their handheld tablet, the Steam Deck. Sony and Microsoft are fucked and they won't even last in the handheld market because no exclusives, higher price points, and jumping into markets Nintendo and Valve already own. I'm specifically looking at this from Nintendo vs Sony standpoint in console handhelds, and a Valve vs Microsoft standpoint in PC handhelds.

It's funny that out of all three of them, Microsoft might be the only one that manages to not have issues with kids because they own one of the few games that kids are obsessed with: Minecraft. Meanwhile Nintendo themselves admitted that only old people buy their consoles and games now and have resorted into making cartoon movies in the hopes that kids would be interested enough to buy their consoles. Kids grow up watching streamers play and they mostly play on PCs.

If you are a younger individual, where your bedroom is your whole house, it just makes sense to have a super powerful PC box that can play anything on your monitor (remember space is limited).

I'll always prefer consoles, because after I work on a computer for 5 or 6 days a week the last thing I want to do is be on one more.

Xbox is the only one with a clear vision of where the video game market is headed out of the three console manufacturers. Gen Z and Alpha have no loyalty towards an exclusives box and only want to play games on the things they own like their phones or tablets. The only way to solve this is to provide the games on as many platforms as possible for this to happen. Nintendo might be the last one with exclusives but they are pricing themselves out from the younger demographic entirely by making their games $80 combined with the high price of the switch 2 and offering no cheap solutions for kids to play their games now.

Right now the only path forward for console manufacturers to focus on games, making it available everywhere and offer multiple payment plans in order to access them. If you dont have this, you're gonna be losing the young demographic and that's a losing proposition in the long run.

The entire console category is an outdated relic that has no actual reason to exist anymore. It continues to lumber on due to inertia and momentum from decades ago, both in culture but especially in the companies who are still selling 'em.

Consoles made sense decades ago when people didn't already have devices which could play video games in their home. Consoles filled an obvious niche, if you wanted to play games at home you needed something to run your games and consoles filled that role because computers and smartphones weren't present in every home already.

That is no longer the case today. Consoles are just DRM locked PCs and they no longer have a reason to exist when a real PC without the DRM locks plays the same games and way more or when the smartphone in everyone's pocket is ever-present and at least somewhat capable. Why buy a console? You already have things that can play games in addition to doing all kinds of other things for you as well.

I genuinely still think its just the lack of exclusives. Switch 2 even just with its two games made the console a fun purchase.

The plug and play nature of consoles was one of the biggest appeals for them, that shit died with previous gen and got even worse with this generation.
Also this gen they actually increased the prices compared to launch, at this point you can buy a shit tier laptop and that will cover a bigger library than what the 9th gen consoles have to offer, you'll only miss out on indian optimised UE slop.
Boomers buy consoles only out of principle, the only new releases they play is probably remakes of games they loved.

The thing is, that doesn't matter for Sony or Microsoft, since they're not primarily video game companies.

I find it sorta funny that I'm practically a console-only user (Switch -> Switch 2 now) in my 30's, while I was more of a PC guy in my younger days. PC long stopped to have any sort of value and appeal for someone like me who just wants to play games.
The one thing I can agree however is that there is little point in owning multiple devices for vidya now, since many games are available on many platforms at once on release or later.

I really want to emphasize this point for everybody.
For a very long time, every console was a unique piece of hardware. The Genesis had its own little foibles and gimmicks, and so did the Nintendo 64, and so did the Xbox 360. They weren't PCs.

The Xbox One, PS4, Xbox Series and PS5 are just fucking PCs. They're off-the-shelf PC hardware shoved into a box. There really isn't a point for them to exist, and every previous console did in fact have a point to exist.

The old Steam machines sucked ass because they were running on 2011 versions of linux that had practically zero compatibility with windows games. All you could play was shit like Super Tux Cart and maybe a linux port of The Witcher that was outsourced to indians. That and there was no quality control on the hardware side so companies were just shipping whatever boxes they had lying around and putting linux on them without giving a fuck if the drivers worked properly. You know how PS4 had that game Dreams where you could make your own games in it and share it with others? Roblox is that but aimed at kids, on basically every platform, free, is extremely versatile in just how much it can do, and very approachable. Think of Roblox as the equivalent of a console within a game. It has its own exclusive games to it, it has developers dedicated solely to making things for it and making money from the users spending their money on it, and it's essentially infinitely scalable with very little production costs.

Not really. If you're in the market of portable gaming, for example, there's no reason to get a Switch over something like a SteamDeck or any other similar handheld. There's plenty of smaller brands selling PC handhelds at a similar price point. And with a PC you have an infinitely larger game library and an option to emulate.

Damn, sounds rough. I know movies and TV aren't videogames, but if you take Netflix and Prime as examples you see a clear decline in artistic quality, production values and cultural touchstones. In exchange, you get an absolute firehose of 'content'. That's it. It's purely quantity over quality. What you also don't get is profits. Streaming services needed worldwide lockdowns to turn profits AND they needed to be subsidized by their board members (Netflix) or ancilliary businesses (Prime). Netflix still hasn't attained the reliable profits they had when they were physically mailing DVDs to your house. People have been talking about "flooding the zone" in media for years and years and we still do not have a solid example of this succeeding.

All this game service crap kids play on their phones right now won't be accessible in 2040, it will be replaced with some newer shit. A PC-only world means developers have an extremely difficult time getting seen or visibility at all due to how much they have to compete with on the PC storefronts. Consoles and their exclusives are objectively good for gaming as it allows for niches, genres, and communities to form because there's a central hub for these things on various platforms. The Switch 1's launch alone should have beaten you over the head with this with how many indie devs succeeded early on because they had high visibility on a small market and the Vita niches and developers started to move over to it with their smaller games because the userbase was now there.

Losing consoles and exclusivity means now there's less of a chance for tons of games to succeed when they otherwise could have because of the unique situations present there. Yakuza, Persona, and Nier are only big now because the PS4 at the time of 0, 5, and Tomato's release respectively had no major games on the horizon outside of RE2R and people were jonesing for new games. That lack of major releases in that small 2-3 month period meant these medium-sized releases got way more eyeballs than they ever could have.

Balatro and Palworld are examples of games getting extremely lucky and succeeding on PC, they're not the standard, whereas on consoles you get entire new genres popping up like Soulslikes just because developers can target specific niche communities.

Half my childhood and teenage years were playing PC games on my '95 and later '98 computers. Worms, Dark Knights II, Outlaws, Chex Quest, the Backyard games, Humongous Games, Area 51, Operation Neptune, etc. I understand if you dislike consolization in terms of mechanics and casualization which is completely fair, but consoles are a net positive for gaming across the board and to deny that is the equivalent of holding your hands over your ears because you don't want to shell out money for these standalone locked down platforms.

An enormous amount of games wouldn't even exist if not for the console market, and the PC market does not even remotely have the same niche groups that consoles have let alone in ways you can easily target them because it has its own niches like grand strategy, RTS, etc. This isn't even bringing up the issue of market oversaturation in the case of Steam releases with thousands of games being released every single day on the platform making it very difficult for anyone to stand out.

These are just the simplest examples I know of from when the Switch 1 was released and devs were seeing monumentally higher sales because they had more visibility and less competition to deal with.

This isn't even getting into the fact that many series that are big now on PC only got to that point because they got big on console in the first place. Monster Hunter, Yakuza, Days Gone, Horizon Zero Dawn, Ghost of Sushi, Street Fighter, Resident Evil, Nier, and Persona are all very recent examples of brands that found success on PC because of consoles making them big beforehand. Without consoles none of these brands would exist in the first place.
