I miss the old Compile Heart. They're so pathetically buckbroken nowadays it's depressing to see. Not just the lack of fanservice, their overall game quality took a nosedive after 2020. They saw what was happening with Omega Labyrinth Z and Senran Kagura Burst ReNewal in the west and tried to release Mary Skelter 2 on PS4 in an Asia-English version like they had done with a few Vita titles such as Moero Chronicle. Sony then forced a censorship patch on it that was so bad it literally broke the game. That was what prompted them to release it on Switch, and back then, it was good. Neptunia MKII. It was the first title they put out that wasn't absolute garbage. Compile Heart/Idea Factory put out so much trash on the PS2/PSP/PS3. I got suckered into buying a game called Record of the Agarest War because of the elf loli fanservice but it's maybe 5% of the game while the rest is a snoozefest story and a dogshit unbalanced battle system.

The plot wasn't anything special in general, but that was one thing that stood out to me. Fang can have a huge change of heart, and resolve that things are going to be different this time around and that no one has to die, only to have the universe mercilessly shit on his efforts. Usually when something like that happens in a game it seems like the plot bends over backwards to make everything work out for the protagonist and prove that they're making the right choice, so it was a nice change of pace.

That's not the dungeon I'm talking about. Area 3, Kaguya's area especially the first floor. That thing is just nonstop twists and turns with no logic or reason. That said they did make it too easy in the remake. It would've been better to find a middle ground but for a 3rd area dungeon it was bullshit to be that large. Even more so when the first floor has no Nightmare so you're not even escaping anything you're just wondering around until you find the next floor entrance.

Barely anyone played Fairy Fencer F Refrain Chord, but it had the best music gimmick. As an SRPG it was uh, not very good. But god damn, the music was fun.

There were two main songstress commander units, one on your side, and the other is one of the recurring antagonists. When one of them activates a song, the BGM is overriden with their song. Each song has a certain range of tiles and give buff/debuffs depending on the song selected. And both the songstress heroine and the antagonist songstress had a good 10 songs each.

Literally all the songs have a combination and there's even variations on which song is the dominant one with it carrying the instrumentals and main vocals while the interrupting song gets relegated to just backup vocals.

A shame because there's like 2 "meta" songs, so despite the huge music library and combination potential, you'll realistically just be hearing the same 2-3 songs. But you're free to change up the songs at the cast of gimping your gameplay a bit just to hear the other combinations.

I think that's the major issue with exa_pico. There's just waaaaay too much supplemental media to consume if you want the full story. its good for what compile heart was able to do all in house and fits nicely into the mainline story but its one of the most problem jrpgs i've ever played. that along with game maker are barely even functional jrpgs. the game had 0 play testing, there;s no excuse for level 8 enemies to be spawning in the final dungeon in the game when are all around level 50+. There's also powerups you can get where you can animation cancel out of anything but the problem is your attacks can cancel your other attacks. so if you press attack too quickly your attacks will cancel eachother out without actually having enough frames for the active damage frames to be active. there's just so many problems with the game as a jrpg that its mind boggling that this came from a developer that has been specializing in rpgs for decades.

I'm well aware Mugen Souls is not for everyone, even among Compile Heart games. It's a pretty rough around the edges Disgaea with Neptunia-style systems, and the postgame grind is particularly daunting, which is why I don't often recommend it. The Switch ports also run very poorly, capped at 30fps with major dips in certain areas, the hub area in particular, and they're the only content-complete versions in English, all others aside from the Japanese PS3 versions are censored (thanks NISA and Ghostlight). But I personally found it very charming. Chou-Chou in particular is one of my favorite CH protagonists and it's a shame she's basically been forgotten. I heard Mugen Souls Z smooths out a lot of the rough edges of the first game, but I haven't gotten to it yet, nor am I looking forward to a story that shits on Chou-Chou in favor of a new protagonist.
