It's quite fun. The plot is really dumb and campy, and the characters are overdesigned, but the gameplay is really fun. If you've played previous FE games you'll enjoy how much it lets you break the "rules" of Fire Emblem via your emblem rings while still being designed in such a way that it's still challenging.

Its extremely fun and has a lot of interesting challenges in the maps that you need to be creative about. Id say after solm palace just about every map is a unique scenario until the last 3 chapters which are pretty samey (but still fun!) and the paralogues are all nostalgia berries.
The gameplay mechanics are actually quite lame because of how the rings and inherit system works to overshadow them. Still, they nailed the rings and the skills so it is still a satisfying gameplay experience, just less mechanical than the other games.
Staves and support oriented rings really mix up the gameplay because its a good idea to swap out your 9th best combat unit for a staff bot now and load them up with different utility. Partly because the amount of offense boosting rings is limited its pretty feast or famine for your carries.
SKIP ALL THE CUTSCENES you do not need to see them. The supports are fine, but the actual story of the game is boring and lengthy.

There are a couple of odd mechanics in this one like no exp penalty on promotion as an example so early promoting is optimal. Ill leave the rest of the discovery to you assuming you play the game.

You should wait until this DEI product releases if you wanna see real ugliness.

If you like Fire Emblem a lot, it's worth it because it is a fun game. The gameplay, levels, and music were all good. Everything else, not good. Too many insufferable characters and the story is very dumb.

Everyone who says this has good gameplay is a parroting NPC who lack the skills for critical thought. The game is a boring homogenized mess where you use the same characters(rings) every playthrough and attach them to different stat allocations(characters), of which who don't matter much outside of a few specific cases. This means you can't even lose your actual characters via permadeath, as you don't lose the rings when a character dies. There are extremely powerful yet boring to use mechanics attached to these rings, such as being able to dance five units in a row or game breaking shit like bonded shield, and their only way to make things difficult in any sense of the word is endless reinforcement spam like you're playing Awakening. It's not an awful game, it's just really imbalanced and dull to play once you realize how overcentalizing and all encompassing the ring system truly is.

Insuferable pre-teens that started playing FE with Three Houses got really upset by people saying the game has it's shares of issues and bad maps. So they had to pit it against whatever game that came next that isn't a Three Houses 2.

The thing is a lot of the silly story stuff in Engage is also present in Three Houses (shitty father/mother death, shitty one note annoying characters (I'm the guy that sleeps! I'm the guy that likes alpacas!), ...). Engage would always have a worse story if the main gist is having to force a plot where you gather all main heroes from the previous games. But the Three House kids force a narrative that Engage is soOoOoOo much worse than Three Houses, that Engage should've been more like Three Houses, that we entitled brats must boycott the game and harass the writer in order to steer things back to Three Houses, we must celebrate Pikmin 4 beating Engage at Snooze Awards, etc.

So if you have a brain, is older than 13yo and isn't a disingenius cunt, no, you shouldn't skip Engage.

People have such stupid and surface level problems with every FE story. I genuinely think the biggest problem with fire emblem stories is that they take so long. If you don't have much to say, or if the drama is low (which it almost always is due to the episodic nature of FE stories where they have to lead directly to the next battle) then you need to be kurt. In the last like 4 games in a row we have had story scenes that take upwards of 10 minutes and besides fates theres a ton of minor dialogue from unimportant characters to scrounge for. If the story had about 60% less writing, it would be completely inoffensive for most gamers compared to what it is now.
Still, I do enjoy the simple stories of losing everything, gathering the macguffs, retaking your homeland, and killing the dragon which appears in plenty of fire emblems. There are stories i enjoy and they dont need gratuitous text to be told.

I do agree with this. I'd respect Engage going for the super simple "go kill evil dragon" plot if it actually committed to having as light of a story as Mystery. story discussion is very isolating too. there is a lot of je sais ne quoi when it comes to why fire emblem games and the characters in them are appealing. my merrin had cool lines when you selected her and cool animations and after battle quotes and cute supports.
characters just grow on you when they clutch the fuck up or do something only they can do. its why i think fe awakening had one of the casts with the strongest appeals in its era, there was so much rng in that game that your characters were constantly giving you that thrill whenever they do something clutch or just pop off over and over again when they dont need to. i cant explain why i like merrin just by posting her supports because merrin is the full package. you need to be carried through maddening by her and hear "that was cool was it not?" 200 times before you understand her appeal.

If Fire Emblem is getting in depth gameplay discussion the usual cope of "w-well it's just waifu spam so it doesn't count!" doesn't work and other strategy game fans have to admit their games have the depth of a puddle.
