souls pvp is kinda neat in theory when you expect and accept that everyone is gonna do whatever they want. When you start trying to enforce social rules, you're a massive fag. This goes to both invaders and the invaded.
If you invade and complain about the host running from you or summoning someone to help them, you're a faggot.
Why wouldn't the host try to avoid the fight or gain as much of an advantage as possible? you're trying to kill him.

In the older games I liked invading with shitty or themed builds because the challenge was enjoyable but in ER it is just not fun to slowly chip down 3 high level players with full estus and healing spells that are spamming AoEs on top of each other. If you can't one-combo a phantom when they fuck up and get caught alone for a few seconds you have to do literally like 30k damage win an invasion.

Because the game isn't built PvP first, nor is it balanced for PvP.

People quickly discover the dominant strategies and keep abusing those with every encounter, completely stealing away the fun from those just casually playing through the game, it's why mods like seamless co-op became a thing.

I've noticed that PvP players never want to fight those better than them or of equal skill, they only want to kill the type of players who simply want to experience the PvE side of the games. They want the easy wins, the high kill counts, it's why Tarkov players currently are crying so much that the PvE mode is taking away their "chaff", so to speak, and they keep dying a lot more in the PvP since they're now actually fighting on equal grounds with other sweats and NEETs, and not against some weekend dads who play only few hours a week.

This phenomenon crops up in every game that has both elements, especially if they're linked together somehow. Another good example is runescape. PvP retards want people to be forced to go into PvP zones, because otherwise they're stuck fighting other PvP sweatlords like themselves and don't get the feeling of stomping out someone who has no idea what they're doing and doesn't want to be there.

The main problem with Dark Souls PvP imo is the asymmetric advantage of game investment. Being able to take a +15 longsword back to the burg is stupid, but even without that an invader can farm up 99 humanity from the rats and then invade other players of exactly equal progression but vastly less time investment and just heal-check their way through the normal player's limited estus. The invader just shouldn't be able to heal at all probably was the correct solution.

DS1 PvP is like Smash Bros Melee, it's so broken and buggy it becomes deep. But by that same token, there's no way to organically learn it. You HAVE to look up all the different exploits that everyone uses if you want to be able to compete at all, or you're just going to get roflstomped by some sweaty faggot.

DS2 PvP on the other hand was almost as deep as DS1 PvP with all its exploits (and way, WAY deeper than DS1 PvP without exploits), and was much easier to naturally learn because you weren't required to literally break the game in order to compete.
DS2 PvP also received MUCH more support from the devs, and with DS2's much larger build variety is IMO way better than DS1's PvP.

The PvP of any other Souls game after DS2 is so trash it's not even worth mentioning.

My favorite hours playing DS3 were spent invading at pontiff. Unfortunately, faggots always set up fightclubs there (why not go to a place that isn't a covenant zone, faggots?) which I didn't really like doing, I liked FFA invasions more.
So what I did was, I would put on the invis ring and go on the tower and snipe the fightclub with a greatbow until they were fed up and had to come out and go through the level like god intended. The worst types of people got attracted to it and ruined it. Early invasions in Dark Souls were so fucking good. Nobody knows what they're doing or where to go, their gear is pretty weak so fights are long and tense, and the high player count meant you could have blues popping in to make it like a six person battle royale. It was so damn good, man.

Then it didn't take long for everyone to run DWGR/Hornet Ring with claymores. Wasn't long after that the toggle escape glitch was found. Then you got the sweats doing ring/weapon swaps early on. Fightclubs became more common as invasions slowed, meaning you would be fighting some of the sweatiest dudes imaginable. Streaming was just becoming big at the time too, so you had people like Peeve, Oro, and others sort of pushing the meta race to the bottom.

That would have been fine, but then the 1.05 update dropped and PC players metagamed the fuck out of everything. /dsg/ made a lot of funny meme videos, but a lot of those dudes were hardcore PvP autists that would play like a scumbag just to spite you. Hacks become common even on console since you could just transfer your save file onto a USB and edit it to have +15 crystal weapons, infinite HP, you name it. Random invasions were so few and far between that your only chance of playing was to go to Darkroot. Dark Souls II came out and split the playerbase in half, with a lot of hanger-ons going back to Dark Souls and optimizing literally everything. That group of autists went on to basically run all PvP groups and discussions for years, and Youtube/Twitch becoming so much bigger meant their cancerous tactics were fucking everywhere. Dark Souls II Havelyn/Santier Spear, Dark Souls III straight sword spam, Elden Ring dual rapiers/spears. The PvP is essentially balanced around end-game fightclubs and not random invasions, so it's always going to be shit now.

Apples and oranges. I play or have played pretty much every genre of competitive 1v1 game, and FromSoft PvP just scratches a different itch. It's an entirely unique experience that can't be replicated in a fighting game, RTS, FPS, etc. I like it because it's unpredictable, funny, and novel, which isn't something I'd use to describe many other multiplayer games. Even when you're taking it seriously and really trying to kill some tryhard in an honorable 1v1 duel to the death, there's still a chance that he'll accidentally jump backwards, fall into a pit of giant ants, and be devoured. Or be flattened by a passing giant ball, or bisected by a guillotine, or what have you.
