On release night I watched a full no-commentary playthrough on Youtube. I didn't even know it was an official game at first until I saw people in the comments saying it was real. I stayed up till 1 AM on a school night watching because it managed to hook me.

I remember making a lot of jokes about Kris and Susie lookinh like school shooters, and I thought the opening was pretentious, but I got into it once Lancer showed up.

I played it myself a few days later, and it became an ongoing obsession that I've kept to this very day. Ralsei was my favorite character, I'd go around sketching this silly OwOfied version of him on various things, and changed my pfp to him. Then chapter 2 came out and ruined him for me.

I love it, but I worry I'm going to come to hate it in the coming chapters. The game feels like it was utterly tired of being what I liked in chapter 3 and took a series of serious wrong turns in chapter 4.

I'm not sure whether the heart object is supposed to be a personification of the player, or another "character' in-game, but it is certainly more tied to the player, so it creates space for that analysis.

It was too serious and too similar to a normal jrpg. The titan and the spawn were the worst parts, alongside their new game mechanic. Unpleasant fights with aggressively boring non-characters as opponents. Then of course there's Ralsei being a lying faggot and everyone cheering for him because he cried.

The rest was just meh. It would be easier to list the parts I liked, which were the Noelle's house segment, Gerson, Jackenstein, and Toriel being shown on screen to be a whore. Weird route was kino as always, but I count it separately from the rest of chapter 4.

I avoided anything UT/DR related for about 5.5 years (occasionally orbiting the fan stuff) until I tried Chapter 1 in early 2021 since it was free and had nothing to lose or gain. I wound up actually enjoying it, but felt like I missed out on all its discourse and Undertale's, and felt unfulfilled. So you can imagine my fucking hype when less than a year after finally trying it that Toby released Chapter 2 for free and I got to experience it blind, day one, uninterrupted. Since then, and after interacting with DT threads for the past 4.5 years, I've become a fan for life as much as some parts of the larger fandom remind me why it took me so long to actually reach that point.

3 & 4 raised the bar even more than 2 did over 1 did. 3, specifically, surpassed my expectations from Toby saying it was a more "frivolous", minigame laden chapter when it got into the Sword Route.

Honestly, this just goes to show how well understood someone like Susie is compared to how misunderstood Kris tends to be. Susie's virtually unchanged in the redraw, mostly only getting a muted color palette like the rest of the crew. Kris, meanwhile, is drawn to have almost a completely different vibe (sidelocks instead of generally long hair, a facial scar, a turtleneck instead of something more resembling a dress shirt, smaller overall frame, gloves, you get the idea). A lot of heavy lifting just to pass off Kris looking vaguely feminine.

I could go on about this redraw, talk about shit like Berdly's shirt emblem no longer matching his colors, ruining the joke that implies he's self-absorbed enough to wear an emblem resembling himself, but I think the main takeaway from Toby accidentally retweeting this is that he's lurking a Kriselle artist rather than a FemKris artist (especially since such artist typically depicts Kris mostly androgynous anyway). I only really understood how fucked up it was on my second playthrough; I wasn't looking at Susie's changing expression and was drawn to the wackiness of the dance, and didn't look in the fridge, and by that point in my first playthrough I was pretty fed up with Kris's shit so I enjoyed the schadenfreude of him being so miserable, so I did recognize the neglect but didn't think about how bad it really was and didn't factor in what it meant to Susie.

I think a lot of people didn't dwell on the implications which is why you saw retards on twitter and reddit painting it as just a single mom having a life and enjoying herself instead of completely forgetting she was a mother in a time of crisis (someone attacking the house the previous night and a cop missing), ignoring basic duties like feeding her kid and shattering Susie's impression of what she considered a role model after the chapter had established the importance of that for Susie.

Toby has a team of relatively inexperienced people working full or part time on the game, yet has studios backing him such as Nintendo. He's simply just too busy being an e-celeb to properly devote himself to the game.

In Toby's ideal world he would have locked himself and Temmie in a bunker and done nothing but work on Deltarune until it was done
But instead they released Chapter 1 in 2018 because he realized the scope of the game was too large for him to approach it like they did with Undertale and needed help. Even more important to his personal contribution, his chronic wrist issues became debilitating and he is physically no longer able to work like he had before, relying on text-to-speech software and delegating (or dictating) a lot of the computer work that he would have done himself.
Toby has not been a direct bottleneck on development for a long time, but his extensive personal oversight of the team of people working to realize his dream game, his greater-than-normal involvement with the game's Japanese translation, and his inexperience as a project manager working with a lot of friends and similarly inexperienced artists have certainly all contributed to an extraordinarily long/slow pace of development. Some of this has been addressed like hiring an actual project manager in 2023(?) to get the team's shit together, but this is fundamentally an indie project with no real oversight or deadlines to meet, he's not going to sell out to Nintendo to get the project he's been working toward for 15 years over with a little faster.

Deltarune has been in proper development since 2015. Ch1 took 3 years because it was just Toby and Temmie working on it for the most part. Ch2 took 3 years because Toby and his new bum team spent a solid year dicking around with other game engines just to end up going back to GameMaker. Ch 3&4 took 3+ years because Toby kept fucking with ch3 as well as all the problems with GameMaker.
All of this could have been avoided if he hired a bunch of code monkeys from the very start and switched to a proper engine.
