Midna is often considered Link's best companion and Curly gets involved in some of the most memorable moments in Cave Story. I'd absolutely say it's appeal for the characters, not just their games or fan art of them. Madotsuki's the only real debatable one, but moreso because reading her character is largely down to how you interpret her dreams. It's not as concrete as Midna or Curly Brace.

Characters like Krystal and Fang were spite voted out of the first round despite being bracketed against complete nobodies because of weebs and the even the tournament organizers themselves (like the one retard who tried to disqualify Fang because her popularity came from a "fan game" but then tried to allow an actual troon character).

I think the problem was the matchup. Had Grimm fought Demo-Fiend we would've gotten a kino JRPG boss battle between 2 protags helped by faeries ft. niggermen. Grimm's campaign up till this point was mostly in-character and didn't really mention the schizo alliance.
