yeah. low skill floor means you can be pretty shit at him but still be usefull. Spamming chokes works wonders. Learning how the slow projectiles move early on is very good too. It's also one of the few classes you can stack without it too negatively impacting your team. He is also quite forgiving, being able to go 1v1 is most situations when caught of guard. Last but not least, learning how to rocket jump takes time, the earlier you start the better.

It'll never be approachable. TF2's game theory is very shallow while the mechanics are janky. The "skill ceiling" only appears high because of the Source engine, the reason why so few Invite teams do it is because nobody with actual talent cares, top Invite players don't even have time to grind like that anymore. If you main Scout then your routine consists of aim trainers, for Soldier you are basically just doing jump maps and mge, for Demoman you practice rollouts and do soap dm and you do all of this for 8 hours a day. You do all of this with the hopes of winning the team/mate lottery, winning Advanced only to burnout after top3 Invite and then retiring. Even European "pro" TF2 players have expressed silently their regret with playing comp TF2 so excessively, saying that they felt no pride and no satisfaction from even going so far as to win Premier division. Here's what you do, if you are one of the unfortunate souls who got into competitive then it's because you got a decent dopamine hit from being successful in lower divisions. You're going get sucked into this community of covert narcissists and ride your way to AT BEST the Main or middle Advanced division (d2/d1 divisions for ETF2L) then burn out hard because you realize the tippy top are grinding 12 hours a day and don't absorb any vitamin D or sleep so they're all psychotic and weird as fuck, literal gaming cryptids (which is a running gag in the community) or have been competing for the last 15+ years straight. So no, comp isn't approachable, it'll never be approachable and it'll never have that eSports flair like cs2 or Overwatch where "pro" players are pedestalized and dickrode so fucking hard, you'd wonder why they're still virgins. so im playing some casual pub game earlier tonight with friends. have several unregistered backstabs. the usual. at one point i stab a soldier directly in the back twice and both fail.

but no big deal its always like this.

The problem with 'bridging' the casual -> competitive gap with matchmaking is that being effective as a team in tf2, at a competitive level, requires making friends with 5, 6 or 8 other people and getting a good grasp on how they tick.

Casual matchmaking forms the exact opposite habits that you need to form a team. Teams form over long periods of people getting to know each other in community servers, not 2 minute stompfests that instantly rip each player away from each other once the gaming quota is up.

I've played RGL for 3 seasons in a row now. I've never played NC so I didn't really talk about it, but I don't know if NC really 100% fixes what I'm saying. For starters there's no way to get back into NC once you're out. So that by itself forms a time limit of how long you're allowed to have fun

But in casual tf2 you are by definition playing casually, theres lower stakes, and often times literally no one is speaking, specially since in modern MM you get matched with absolute randoms each time you find a server. And in the case of someone speaking, its usually just having a conversation or banter rather than some tactical call or whatever.
In competitive TF2, even at the lowest level, theres always communication, and EVERY PLAYER is expected to communicate.

Something as simple as calling which side the enemy team is pushing from, or wether they used uber, wether you killed X or Y, wether they're running an unexpected class or hiding somewhere. Some stuff that would work in casual because people dont communicate, wouldnt work at all in competitive because people communicate.

Like if a single guy sees you in a hiding spot in casual it barely matters, but in comp, his whole team will be notified of your hiding spot and come to kill you even if you kill the one guy, so its a major difference and affects the gameplay too.

The thing people misconstrue about comp classlimits is how classes can be good situationally even if they're trash generally.
Engineer and heavy are trash generally, but they're reallly good situationally, like on last.

As an engineer on 6s, you will literally just build a sentry 5 feet from spawn, level it up, then sit in spawn safely and switch to a combat class once your sentry is destroyed, or once your team needs to push out. So a engineer almost acts like an extra player in those SPECIFIC situations.
If you had 2 engineers, that would mean 2 sentries for the enemy team to destroy in order to break into last, while the 2 engies could just switch to real classes right after. Engineer is such a straight upgrade holding last its almost like having 8 players instead of 6.
And with heavy its similar as you can just walk back and forth from the spawn and go back to 300 hp, and get crit healed to 450hp. 2 heavies is a full 900 HP then, which is more than even 2 soldiers can do unloading all their mags.

Spychecking as Pyro isn't particularly effective if the Spy has a Dead Ringer and most maps have many flanking routes which makes spychecking completely moot. You really just need to turn around and watch your backside, competent players never rely on teammates to cover their ass.
