The drink, medal and wind stock mechanic are so badly designed I think they only pushed those out because fixing them would have to require making them look to similar to other character gimmicks elsewhere

I played like 15 games against blanka as a gief player. They ask you at the start what your level of experience with fighting games is.
What you pick strongly influences where you get placed, so if you picked Advanced then what you said is true, you'll probably end up in Gold even if you lose most of your matches.
But someone like that is picking Beginner because they haven't played fighting games like that, so they're starting from Rookie or Iron unless they win literally all of their placements.

Also obviously if you aren't playing ranked for the first time, your placement is more influenced by the highest rank of your highest ranked character.
