I played Return of The Obra Dinn recently and I have to say that some of the gameplay aspects converge in your game. The difference is that Lucas Pope was already known figure in indiescape, I bet he had enough connections in the press and gaming community to have his stuff in a spotlight. What's more it had voice acting and the mystery was already very high with the skeleton being the very first thing that you can investigate and additional gimmick of a pocket watch that could transport you to the moment of their demise. With MotM we have a distressed woman that got jumped on the museum grounds. It has a pretty weak hook.
Of course I hope the best for you but current market might be a little too dumb for a slowburn mystery like yours.

Looks like another prototype game.
Default Godot menus, has the needed options.
Game doesn't like being resized or put in full screen.
It also doesn't close with alt+f4 or closing the game window.
Trying different resolutions but no dice.
I like the MML style assets.
Not sure if the game is bugged for me but I don't see any other weapons.
Anyway I start blasting.
Ran out of ammo and don't see any way to get more.
The escape ship didn't do anything for me.
Overall, I'm not sure what to say about this prototype, I like the assets, I like the idea, it's a good start but needs to go back into the oven for a while to get crispier.

Yet another prototype.
A multiplayer CTF shooter with vehicles.
No menus to config anything.
Has the makings of something fun, this formula is tried and true.
I recognize the Halo pistol sound, vehicles could use some SFX when driving.
Camera is kinda wonky for the jeep, can't look around.
You can score on both sides, the player characters should be painted in team colors.
Shooting feels decent, grenades can be spammed infinitely but it's kinda broken fun.
Maybe a jump button would make it feel nicer.
Overall, not much more to say about this, with just a bit more fleshing out it'll quickly become fun and addictive. The WW2 assets kinda remind of Battlefield Heroes, dev should lean into that cartoonish style.

It is what I asked for but it's still not that noticeable. If resource icon get's darker it would be harder to see what resource is it, but text alone is too little. Consider making the frame darker too.

Browser game, looks like some 3 dimensional checkers.
Very barebones, no feedback for anything.
Sometimes I click to move but it doesn't move.
Rotating is intuitive.
With some music and SFX, maybe something in the vein of Super Hexagon with voices and music that make you want to go fast it could be a fun little game.
I can't say much else about this, could not find the fun in it.

probably, from my experience it's easy to become extremely skilled at your game while developing it, and forgetting what the experience is like for newcomers
getting playtesters generally helps alleviate this problem, but significantly extends dev time
devs i know just make their games slightly easier than they think it needs to be to pre-emptively account for their skill standards

Do you notice if a game feels too easy, that an interesting story helps you alleviate this boredom?
I ask this because I prefer easy games, but also find them boring if there's nothing about the premise of the game that interests me. A few months ago, I got oneshotted by a mobile game where all you do is shoot bricks, collect points, and upgrade your guns. I played it for 20 hours and spent $15 on it. I've never done this before with any sort of similar game.
I was thinking that if the premise of the game wasn't related to guns, then I probably wouldn't have found it interesting. Since this is a sample size of one, I'm now asking other people if they've experienced anything similar.
It makes me believe the premise, narrative, fantasy, setting, context, whatever it's called, of a game, is much more important than I previously assumed.

Elden Ring didn't have enough of a story for me to care about finishing it
Nintendo isn't exactly known for it's stories and DKB's story is just DK wants bananas so it wasn't that gripping
I will say, a game like Xenoblade Chronicles or Tears of the Kingdom's story kept me gripped through the boring parts and made me want to finish it.

Also I want to take this opportunity to give my thoughts on this whole sentiment you started with. My game was completely developed by only one person. The entire amount of money put into its development is only the $100 Steam fee. I don't have anyone else to share workloads with, I don't have a marketing department, and because of the age we live in, I also don't have time.
This idea that indie devs should be doing an entire marketing plan for their first game like they are a AAA company hanging on to dear life at the mercy of all the platforms and influencers they expect to play their game is one of the most self-destructive things I've ever heard, and I've heard it a lot over the last years.
Any amount of time, and more importantly mental capacity that a dev releasing his full game would ever think to put toward marketing and media outreach is ALWAYS 100% of the time better directed at just working on the damn game. Trying to play pretend at being a corpo and sending out emails like a starving dog is only something that makes sense to do once you have learned how to finish games. At the end of the day you can always hire someone else to do your marketing for you, but nobody is going to design your games for you.

A 2D potion brewing adventure.
I like the bespoke, drawn pixelart for everything.
No options in the start menu, in-game only has volume sliders.
Saving and loading works.
Already has a relaxing quality to it.
Everything is well explained and I like that it shows you a tooltip for things you can interact with.
Most of the environment is pretty static, save for a few plants and things like water, fire.
Seems quite fleshed out already in terms of systems and NPCs you can talk to.
Those bird or insect chirps sound more like old-school alien beams.
I tried making some potion combinations with random items without looking up the formula, hopefully some of the ingredients respawn in the forest after a while because I could not find the needed ingredients to make certain potions again.
Dem boulders lookin' kinda weird man.
When you quit the game by closing the window it should remind the player of saving (or save automatically).
I liked exploring and get to know the different places.
Music is repetitive but not annoying which is good.
The quests are on a timer, I didn't try to complete one, only things I did was make poison for the bartender and strength potion for the guard dude.
Controls are intuitive.
Some of the dialogs for speech could probably be resized and the portraits made bigger or placed in more harmonious manner.
The map transitions seem to only show half of the screen in black, seems a bit bugged.
Overall, I enjoyed my time with this game, it's relaxing and engaging enough, it probably needs a bit more juice and feedback for things like gathering, receiving money, walking etc. Maybe it could have weather, flying birds, fishing etc. I could see it do quite well with a certain crowd.

you're welcome. play vampire survivors if you haven't already. you'll notice after a few chests in your first game that you start getting incredibly lucky with chest rewards. the dev used to work with slot machines so knows the psychology of reward and made it so the first game is your luckiest one even if that means your first game is basically an auto win

A 2D board game filled with mini-games?
The pixel font is, as always, not ideal to read at higher resolutions.
Has options, changing resolution or toggling fullscreen seems to take a few seconds to kick in.
Game really has trouble with alt-tabbing.
Nice background music and transitions.
Some of the mini-games are quite basic, good as an appetizer but could probable be more engaging.
I like that doing the first mini-game opens up all kinds of different squares with a variety of mini-games.
I like the little stories before every game, funny dialogues.
You already did a mini-game it should allow you to skip straight to the mini-game instead of having to skip through the story every time.
Already quite charming and funny despite all the programmer art.
I can see this game being entertaining down the line, it's a great idea for a game, but at the moment... still too barebones in terms of art, sounds, feedback etc to put any great judgment on it. Dev should keep leaning on the tongue in cheek, whacky stories, the board side of the game should definitely be expanded to make it more captivating.

Okay, I understand a bit more now, it's a Risk of Rain clone, your toon shoots on its own, you can buy weapon upgrades with the blobs you collect, a boss appears when you interact with portal at the bottom.
This game is still raw and too simple as it stands.

It looks like an isometric, turn-based, tactics-style game.
The art is rough, the font is really blurry and hard to read.
No music of any kind, just droplets of water falling.
Tutorial doesn't explain much but fumbling around you start to understand how it works.
Enemies are really strong, always die after two turns.
Panning the camera with middle mouse button should allow you to move it around instead of being point-click.
Once in-game there's no way to quit the game.
Overall, this game is in a too rough state to enjoy or be understood by anyone other than the dev. It needs a bit more introduction, more setup, a better tutorial, some music, better font so you can actually read the text.

I actually noticed something vaguely similar with BOTW. When I started playing, my main focus was on maximizing my stamina bar so I could explore faster. Once I maxed it out, I switched my upgrades over for health, unlocked the master sword, beat Ganon, and then stopped playing. There was a ton of content left in the game for me to engage with, but after feeling like I completed the "main" mission, I lost interest. It's funny because while I was grinding shrines to upgrade my stamina, I found the exploration super fun. The game world was awesome. Then I beat the final boss, and I completely lost interest in exploring anything else.

Cops can't distinguish between NPC and hitman.
Cops are only allowed to shoot the hitman if he has drawn a weapon or a "shoot on sight" order has been given by the authorities (could be map-exclusive or when the hitman gets reported by NPCs)
Cops lose if the hitman kills all targets.
Cops can die to the Hitman or die by killing civilians (NPCs) themselves.
If a body is found, cops will immediately be alerted to the location on the map.

I donโt think this is concept possible to make if the intent is for the player controlled Hitman to blend in with NPCs. Like the other anon said, the moment players learn the intricacies of the NPC movement patterns itโs going to become impossible for the Hitman to do anything. Itโs already hard enough to blend in as the Spy in TF2 when youโre against players who arenโt total noobs.
It might work as an inverted Dead By Daylight style game where you have 1 Killer (in this case the Hitman) being hunted by 4 Survivors (in this case the Police). The Hitman is able to use more powerful tools and abilities to outmaneuver the police as they chase him around the map, while the police have to thwart his progress on objectives spread around the area. Not quite the stealth idea you described, but it would probably have a better chance of producing engaging gameplay.
Less than 4 minutes left to figure out if I'd regret removing my submission more or regret keeping it up more.

Menus are simple but well made, options have everything we need.
The art is minimalist but pleasing, reminiscent of early Pokemon games.
I like that most objects have SFX when interacted with.
Probably too many pages for game saving but who knows.
The story seems compelling, as is the character.
Noticed a few typos here and there, and when I reached the basement finishing a conversation always caused some stutter/freeze.
When Cass and Cade are talking at the same time sometimes it's hard to tell at a glance which one is talking, could be made clearer.
I like the small puzzles and the dialogs are not annoying to read like most other text games, short enough sentences to keep your attention.
You could add some tooltips to remind of the players to use Shift to run, Z to interact and X to open your inventory.
Overall, I had a good time with this game and didn't run into any problems, the story makes me want to progress further (especially because I've been in that exact hikiNEET situation). I don't know for how much long it goes on after we leave the basement (and it if it has a good ending) but it's quite charming and well-made. Fix some of the stuttering, add more puzzles and improve the interactions and it could be sold for 2-3 bucks imo.

I implemented the basic mining logic today. So workers get assigned minable blocks, calculate their path and go there. Plus all necessary updates, uploads etc.
The logic is still cursed, as the blocks get assigned the optimal (closest) worker, but they're worked at one by one. It's a minor issue overall though.
Next up maybe more work on mining logic, multiple workers? Or tackling some more graphics, especially lighting. Not sure yet

Stop fucking lying. Your first Vampire Survivors run is indeed semi-scripted, but not for you to win. It's only to teach you that three different versions of chests exists. Winning the first run is so difficult it's almost impossible. VS is a game with high initial difficulty which you are designed to lose (why do you think the Reaper kills you?). The powerups make it a cakewalk, but that's an issue with all metaprogression.

The demo is pretty much over once you're back out of the basement. After that you leave the house and the game just ends with a little joke cutscene. Originally the game was planned for a much longer story starting from the house and going into an office building and a bunch of other places (this is why the save system was coded with 10 pages), but perhaps wisely it was decided to just make the house as a demo to test if the concept was interesting enough to actually build (and somehow it still took nearly a year just to make the damn house).

Have you beaten your own game? How many times have you played it and gotten to round 8? I didn't say your game was bad, I want to like your game, I want to play it and it makes me angry that I can't because there is no balance. I watched other people play it, none of them stuck around long enough to find these issues. Brimstone was close, he discarded like 4 times in a row due to bad letters and didn't notice that he was about to die. Your testers were too hung up on stupid UI shit because they don't play these type of games to notice the gameplay issues. $5 to reroll the shop is a crazy price. Losing a life to discard letters is a crazy penalty, especially when you're going to roll a bunch of repeat useless letters. Having to discard letters to buy new ones makes it not worth it. You've got all these elements that are made for an infinite play type of game and then you jam them into a game where you try to limit it to a small number of rounds and a fixed size. I can see the potential you have here for a balatro, but it's not going to work without good balancing.

The actual game is 15 rounds, I've beaten that plenty of times on harder difficulty as well. The game used to be even harder, but nobody was able to beat it so I made it easier like twice already. The goal for round 15 is 20,000 but it used to be 30,000. I went through all the books today and made the uncommons and rares better pretty much across the board

Browser game that gets the trolley problem aesthetics just right, the roaming orange cat adds a nice touch to break up the monotony of the black & white assets.
I managed to kill 71 before stopping the trolley, which is all that counts: killing as many as possible and annihilate everything that exists with a trolley.
Overall, dev should turn this little experiment into a whacky train game since all the basic structure is already there, it could have various challenges along the way, bodies you need to avoid (or hit), jumping over obstacles, multi-track drifting, sometimes you'd had to quickly build the tracks in front by rotating and picking the right pieces on a timer, sometimes you need to pick to go left or right, think of the possibilities.

A vertical shmup reminiscent of 1942.
Nothing to config.
Sometimes the controls don't seem to respond, probably a function of being played in the browser.
No music, only the sound of engines and pew pews.
It wasn't clear at first what is meant by convergence but after experimenting it has to do with how your plane's firing patterns converge.
Fairly basic and repetitive shooting, in contrast to most games in the genre here you need to conserve your ammo and not shoot constantly.
Too many enemies spawn.
The clouds could a bit of challenge by hiding what's underneath but they're too big and it's not really fun.
In these types of games the gameplay window is usually reduced to about half the screen, so that players canโt just stay on one side and ignore most of the enemies, as we can here.
Bombs seem fairly innocent, they should do more damage and clear the whole screen or a larger area.
Overall, it's a basic attempt at a shmup but needs more ideas to make it fun, condense the whole thing, extract the juice, add more SFX and enemy variety and shooting patterns.

A card game with programmer art.
No intro, no menu, nothing to config, at least the window is resizable.
Tutorial isn't too shabby and the game is easy to understand.
Each fantasy class has innate cards only it has access to.
Each encounter is just a handful of cards you need to "resolve" by drawing from your deck.
Resolving gives you XP to buy other cards.
The layout of the board is pretty bad, it could easily be improved to make it more intuitive.
There are random digits everywhere making it confusing, I thought they were the XP required to buy a card, apparently not.
It's not readily apparent why you'd pick one class over another, they should have clear benefits and drawbacks to fight certain enemies or clear certain quests.
Overall, the basic concept of the game is there, now it needs good art, sounds and music.

It's just my personal experience, but for me, cold turkey has never worked. I was a smoker for around 6 years, and throughout that time, I tried to quit cold turkey several times, and I always failed. It seems easy to you because you know which combinations of items work and what they do. To a new player fumbling in the dark the game seems unbalanced. Now i could be wrong and there is some meta on how to play the extra items, but it seems like to me that there's no point in trying to buy letters or stickers etc because all of the major points come from multiplier books and there's only a handful of builds that are viable. Like the book that randomly turns a tile into a special tile per round, in a 8 round game that item is basically useless, the chances of it flipping a tile that you can play a word on is near zero. I don't see a point in trying to play big words either since you get very little points from most letters and you actually ham yourself up by blocking the board and using up letters. 15 Rounds is also too short for this type of game and you're compensating with the difficulty curve. Take my advice with a grain of salt, it's your game, but I think the mechanics should be focused on endless play and it should be easier to play endlessly for the dopamine addicts.

I don't actually think I'm "gifted", but I was the best artists in my class growing up. I had other kids pay me to draw stuff and my art teachers always used my stuff for examples. The constant praise and lack of an artistic "rival" (that sounds gay but I can't think of a better way to say it) made me complacent and I never developed the drive to practice and improve. Now I'm almost 30 and still draw like a slightly above average artistic high schooler. I barely even try to complete full drawings anymore, the only time I draw is on post-it notes when I'm bored at work.

I wouldn't call it a viable career path regardless. Viable indicates that if you work hard and do everything 'right' you will make it. I don't think that has ever been the case for artistic mediums. While I was at college, I once was on a tour of a nearby graveyard. Yeah, maybe. I think it depends mostly on your skill set going in. From zero skills, going into YouTube, Twitch, or TikTok will be much easier, but programmer wagies such as myself tend to think gamedev is easier to break into. I actually did have a decent idea for a YouTube channel that I wanted to start up, but just last year I saw that one of the big YouTubers (2.3m subs) in the space started a new second channel for the exact topics that I wanted to cover, and I doubt I'd be able to do a better job than he can.

Are there any video games that have "realistic" depictions of racism and racist characters? I don't mean fantasy racism where elves hate dwarves, nor do I mean the caricature of racism from the modern Wolfenstein games. I mean actual racist characters who use slurs and talk like how a real racist would talk.
I've always wanted to play a game set during the American civil war period, but seemingly no developer is willing to touch this area of history with a ten foot pole (excluding games like Hell Let Loose that are just historical shooters). There's tons of movies set during the civil war that have brutal depictions of racism and violence, so why are video games so afraid? Can you imagine the media reaction to a game set during the civil war that had a plantation owner say the word "nigger"? Alternatively, can you imagine a game that has you fighting a gang of skinheads who were all written to speak in non-racist language for risk of offending anyone?
Idk, it just feels like video games as a medium have a lot of maturing to do before they're taken as seriously as film, and this refusal to depict uncomfortable subjects feels like one of the largest obstacles to that. I realize this post is pretty pointless but like I said, I have no where else where I can discuss it.

The current /v/ circlejerk is to act as if any game with a choose-X gameplay pattern is automatically the worst thing ever, but as usual those retards go way too far in one direction and fail to grasp the reality that's somewhere in the middle.
Games that are designed from the ground up to take advantage of choice and offer a gameplay experience that otherwise wouldn't be possible or as enjoyable without the added element of randomness can be good. In a game like Balatro, forming your strategy around the cards you're offered is the entire selling point of the game. Same goes for Slay the Spire.
Games where the developers clearly just slapped a choose 3 option onto a bare bones concept in order to add artificial replayability to an otherwise boring mini game are typically bad. You can probably think of at least 3 examples of games that do this off the top of your head.

NTA but there's unlockables in the sense of "oh cool I found a new thing" (i.e. how StS does it), and then there's unlockables in the sense of "you MUST do this thing 5 times before you can get this thing or else you're never getting it".
I don't think StS does it perfectly but it's integrated into the gameplay well enough that it's not too bad of a system. Plus that game is built around doing short runs, so the speed at which you find new cards isn't too bad.

I originally added it because my whole philosophy when designing this game was that most levels should only take around 90 seconds at maximum. Like most things, start either bottom up or top down. Most people are usually better at the former.
Simply take a small core you think is interesting, figure out why its actually interesting and what enhances (+) and diminishes (-) it, then lay both of those in a quasi logic-matrix. The overlapping (+)(+) create your logical solutions, the (-)(-) signposts to guide the player the other way, and the (+)(-)/(-)(+) is where you get to be creative in tilting the player one direction or the other.
Meanwhile top down is how most 'puzzles within a non-puzzle game' are done and its usually just asking what mechanics are available, what ways can you restrict the player in something that feels the same yet different, then see if stepping back it makes an interesting picture in terms of play
Personally I think most people are so ingrained to handle esoteric abstracted puzzles that you can almost always go with the former and it'll fit into whatever game you have, provided the difficulty (specifically, the pacing) is on point

I don't create puzzle games, but my game creation process is relatively similar.
I either think of the end-state, create it, and then diminish it into its most basic potential form, allowing for players to work their way up through carefully-design progression systems, or I think of a beginning state, normally a game mechanic, and devise ways of increasing the complexity of this mechanic, and create new scenarios to utilize this mechanic.
The first is, I think, top down, and the second is, I think, bottom up.
From my experience, not just with puzzles, but with creating anything, it's extremely difficult to make progress if you don't have a clear understanding of at least one of these procedures.

Although I don't make puzzle games, one thing that helps me finish my games efficiently is, before I even begin working on the game, I either have a very clear picture of either the ending of the game, and work backwards to allow the player to progress towards this ending, or I have a very clear understanding of the core gameplay, and begin designing interactions that mesh well with this gameplay.
My theory for creating puzzles would be, think of an interaction system, and then create a "list of steps" that are required to solve each specific puzzle. Once the solution is created, which can be as simple as "pick up all the red coins in the level", then you can add some sort of distraction, such as yellow coins, blue coins, green coins, and even use hidden areas to make the red coins harder to find. Not really a puzzle, but I hope you see what I mean.
But again, I don't make puzzle games, so my ideas are weak. What I think would work best though is devising a specific path to completing a puzzle, based on the mechanics of your game, and then obscuring this path with various distractions and alternative potential solutions.

Just force yourself to do it. You'll need to get into the mindset for developing though. And that takes a bit. Literally all you have to do is get started (difficult and uncomfortable if it's a boring task) and don't break your flow for a while. After that you'll get in the zone.

These stickers/runes are only useful one time in most cases and have a ridiculous cost by comparison to books. If you want them to be viable they need to go into a bank on the side where you can play from at any time and also need to be cheaper.

Just make as many schemes as possible work for placing tiles. I was playing Cultist Simulator recently and after 40 hours of dragging cards into slots I first discovered that doubleclicking is also possible, then discovered that rightclicking works, too! I figure for many people itโs the other way round, they start with rightclicking and find out about dragging later or whatever.
Best is simply to allow all of it.
