I was listening to V's soundtrack and ngl, and once again I'm pretty disappointed how the game turned out. That eerie chorus like music that plays when the game first start sets up the tone of "Something's bad is going to happen." mixed with the melacholic tone of setting up your name and it really feels like the calm before the storm. It really sets up for this moody atmospheric vibe where people are doing the best to ignore how fucked up the world is about to become. Those first few minutes of the game from the intro and burn of "Hey, people are getting attacked, go home in pairs" in seeing the tunnel, wondering where the fuck you've gone was peak. Then after that it just disappears...

It's sad there is so little. There is more info on how he created the MC, Aogami and the Nahobino more than any of the other human characters. It sounds like Aogami and the Nahobino were easy to make. Aogami is supposed to be a hyper masculine hero so he drew that and he didn't have to change anything. Then he went into creating the MC as a feminine polar opposite counterpart. And after that was finalized he basically just mashed the two designs together and made the Nahobino. And according to him those were the 3 first designs made for the game. There is nothing on the other besides Yoko and Tao where again he made them to be counterparts to each other. I don't remember if he said much about Sahori besides her design being a parallel to the MC. Yuzuru, Dazai, Koshimizu, Miyazu, and Yakumo all have nothing.

I kind of did already several years ago. Someone posted a pattern for a paper doll Aogami but put it behind a pay wall and a limited time printing window at a Japanese convenience store. So I edited the low rez thumbnail with a water mark on it to make it printable because I liked how goofy it was. I could take that pdf and edit it for any SMT character if I cared enough. Not a plushie but still arts and crafts smt. Maybe one day. It would be fun to make a version of the smt1 MC, chaos hero, and law hero so you can display the 3 together. Probably wouldn't be too hard.

Why is Persona more popular than SMT? Is it because of the "dating sim" aspect? Because it's more character driven, while SMT mainly focuses on the consequences of one's beliefs/actions? Persona is easier? Persona is more lighthearted? I just don't see why mainline SMT can't enjoy the same popularity Persona has. I can imagine most casual gamers will recgonise the Persona franchise, but not SMT.

All of the reasons you listed are correct. A fandom, especially these days, is almost entirely built on the characters and the love for them. A pretty good way to guarantee a game thrives is having a memorable and charming cast. See: Deadlock's success compared to how bad Concord flopped. There were a lot of problems with Concord but the biggest thing people complained about was how shitty the player characters looked and that none of them stood out or had any "oomph" to them. Meanwhile, Deadlock isn't even finished and people are already super invested in the characters because all of them are practically dripping with charisma. While SMT does do well on its own, a lot of people agree that the character writing suffers greatly because there really isn't a lot for the audience to work with. What do we actually know about, say, Yuzuru? He has a sick sister, his parents are dead, he has a watch from his father, and he's Tsukuyomi's Knowledge... That's kind of the gist of it. We don't typically get told information that would help us bond with him like his hobbies, his likes or dislikes, or really have any moments with him outside of purely plot-related things. Persona by comparison gives a ton of breathing room for you to spend time with your friends, doing stuff that doesn't entirely concern the main story, and generally just letting us get to know your party members and other NPCs by allowing you to talk to them a lot more. That's the stuff that teenagers in particular latch onto and go absolutely nuts for, and boom, you have a thriving fandom that draws in new people all of the time. Mainline SMT is more for older audiences that aren't that concerned with stuff like that, so even if a lot of people might be into SMT, the fandom seems much more quiet since there's not a lot to discuss without having to basically start making shit up.

Most of it is just printing the character art on different merch over and over again but still, the other games don't get that. The game is episodic in nature. It's kind of framed like a classic detective TV show in some ways. It's also quite lighthearted at times. There's more opportunities for a slice of life filler episode than normal SMT.

As you mentioned, they're more character-driven which tends to be a more popular way of framing a story, and frankly the games tend to be more polished and focused. There are five mainline Persona games, but it's only 3 and on that are especially popular with 5 being the most popular, and they owe much of that popular to their design cohesion and how easy they are to pick up and sink your teeth into. They're also readily available to anyone in at least some form.
The mainline SMT games and their numerous spin-offs vary wildly in quality, focus, and design ethos from game to game. I adore SMT, but you can't really escape the fact that Persona is a more consistent franchise from game to game in the modern era. SMT plays with its core mechanics frequently, but it doesn't always stick the landing and often has some rough edges. Persona's gameplay has its own issues in that department, but its core mechanics largely build on each other over time. Persona 5 is a very easy game, but it plays smoothly.
The grungier aesthetics of SMT probably just aren't as generally popular as the more slick and stylized modern Persona look.

The other Bethel chapters had interesting lore too. Zeus and Odin are reluctant buddies. Odin has been getting involved in war purely to build an army of ghosts in Valhalla by having his Valkyries collect them. Zeus apparently just like to send out random Greek demons out to kill at random and thinks it's funny. It's all barely touched upon world lore. At least Shiva keeping to himself and biding his time made sense because he was collecting magatsuhi on the side. And that's boring but at least it makes sense why he would be absent from the plot.

>Story
It doesn't dwaddle or waste your time like some other fatlus games, straight from point A to B. Focuses mostly on Asuka trying to save Satoshi but starts going off the rails with the demon civil war and Aeacus and stuff. So good start, starts getting meh in the middle then picks up in late disc-2, but weirdly the story never got boring, it was just how they spread out the filler stages. 6-7/10.
>Gameplay
Kind of typical. Unfortunately demons in the game are nearly useless, very few reasons to make one a unit and level it up; better off conducting it and using it as a summon. If you don't want to do that, the rag shop sells items that level them up for you, but you need gems which you can only get from negotiating. A weird thing about negotiating that I didn't know during any of my playthroughs is that, for certain demons, not choosing anything for like half a minute counts as an answer and the conversation will continue as if Asuka had said nothing in response. I've never done this myself.

Two people worked on it, apparently, and although I can't tell who did what there's some really obvious quality spikes. I know one of them is still making music. The soundtrack's okay but some songs are really atmospheric if that makes sense
>general thoughts
I only started playing it because it was...le bad! But then I actually started taking it seriously kek. Seems like something happened during production that fucked it up and they had to go back and overhaul how the game looked in its entirety. I'd like to know exactly what that was but after the game's release Atlus tried sweeping it under the rug and the staff did no more interviews. The demon designer said they worked so hard on it.

I mean you can just find it on Youtube but I'll say one thing; I really like the detail that Satoshi and Sawaki become Ahriman while Asuka straight up dies and the Ahriman we see in ending 2 is LITERALLY Ahriman, not Asuka controlling his corpse.

Ending 1 - Asuka kills Satoshi (never stated if this was in self-defense or he did it because he's becoming heckin' evil), decides not to go to the Makai to look for answers, so the portal closes and their journey effectively ends there. Big mistake, Satoshi becomes Ahriman, Asuka kills him again, the stage explodes and he wakes up in a forest and hallucinates Yggdrasil absorbing his brother. (I say hallucinate but it actually happened)
Ending 2 - Goes to the Makai, kills the three leaders of the demon war, goes back to Aeacus and decides to become Ahriman. Ahriman kills all of his buddies and starts crying over their deaths. The guide actually clarifies that he's not crying because he's sad but because he's finally able to understand how fragile human life is. Then he makes a new contract before nuking the universe, which will reset the world back to before the big bang, and it's kind of implied that the events of Ronde will eventually play out again, whether exactly the same or with some differences, I don't know. When I scan the guide I'll go over it again.
Ending 3 - Asuka doesn't reincarnate into Ahriman, so Sawaki randomly does. It comes completely out of left field but this was actually implied way earlier in the game, it's just so subtle and the game doesn't focus on it at all. The guide also says he did it because he wanted the power of the demons. What an ass. So Asuka kills him and Satoshi comes back to life, happy ending. This actually is completely unexplained even in the guide. He's just alive because he is. And it's explained there that even though Ahriman didn't nuke the universe this time, he eventually will.
Then there's the true golden ending where Asuka kills Ahzura Mazda. That's it. You don't get a special cutscene or anything, just an item saying 'good job, you beat the superboss'. He's not that hard if you plan ahead but he does resist everything iirc

I mean we're pulling from all of mythology here, we can go back to the original scrapped plan for SMT V where we have a game about the anxieties and contrivances of the modern world and how they've warped human spirituality, we can do a "twilight of the gods" storyline, we can lean into what some of the non-mainline games have done and play around with the concept of alien life and beings that are outside the context of even the mythological creatures we ascribe supreme power to, we can dial in on the East-versus-West theme, or the consequences of reincarnation in a world where no one fears death because they know the karma cycle will just fix it in the end and with the advent of VR and advanced computing they can just re-download all their shed memories and knowledge. Hell, go back to the Devil Summoner/Soul Hackers well and lean hard into the noir theming, give me that good old Harry Dresden/John Constantine/Doctor Occult shtick. There's so much more that could be done with this concept than just a simple story about Law and Chaos.

I feel like at it's core the most reoccurring themes that appear in mainline, outside of the Law/Chaos dichotomy and the calamity cycle, are the ideas of change, how humans respond to it, how ideas and ideals change over time, and how the uncertainty and anxiety around change is exploited by malicious actors, whether it's criminals, religious movements, or ideologs.

Keeping that in mind, I think a theoretical SMT 6 should lock in hard on this theming, and have endings focusing more on how we respond to the process of change - with nostalgia, with bitterness, with regret, with optimism. Change is inevitable, you can't stop it and you can't delay it for long, but maybe you can nudge the scales just a bit to make the world a bit more agreeable, or you can choose defeat and walk away, or you can accept your time is past and be a torchbearer for what comes after, or you can just say 'fuck it' and try to burn the house down on your way out the door. Something with a more personal connection and a more direct tie to those innate human fears of loss, of forgetting, of aging, and of changing than just the vague abstraction of Order and Disorder.

Other than that one comment in a dev interview, what's the evidence that SJ was a spinoff? I know that seems like solid proof but afaik it would be one of just 2 megaten games titled "Shin Megami Tensei" in Japan that aren't "real" mainline SMT (other is debisama).
Still I'm pretty sure that if it was meant as a spinoff they changed their minds since it was in the 25th SMT anniversary, but who really cares...

I'm almost more nervous about getting news because what if the new shit we get looks like shit? It's be easier just knowing we get nothing and then seeing if there are other games in the direct that would catch my interest. I still remember how that SH2 reveal was such a let down.

Combat is good, over all I enjoyed it even with the smallish Compendium. The Stack system is fun and Sabbaths are very satisfying though once you learn how to work it the thrill wears off a bit, similar to Downs and Press Turns. Combat does have much more in common with Persona 5 than IV or V/VV so if that's a turn-off you'll wanna keep that in mind. Elements are also pretty simplified.

The story and sidequests are all okay good, but the pacing is kind of weird and the latter is much more interesting than the former imo. It's got the same kind of issue Persona 5's Story/Momentos had where the plot makes it seem like you have to go go go go go and you're racing against the clock but the actual game wants you to slow down and talk to all these random NPCs and care about their stories. On that note, just about everyone from the random henchmen loitering around the Summoner side of town, to random NPCs on the street, to the shopkeepers has some kind of running story arc going, usually related to some regret they have from their past, something they latched onto to give themselves hope, or some failed dream they never achieved. Bonding with teammates is the actual meat and potato of the game, Saizo was probably the strongest character with his whole "hard-boiled detective never gets the girl" shtick but Milady and Iron Mask and the shadier side of Yatagarasu coming up were interesting plot points. But when it's time for the actual plot divorced from your companions and their issues, it's a pretty generic doomsday special.

The Soul Matrix is basically Momentos, and I mean that in both a good and a bad way. The times when it gives you a storybeat or tells you something about a party member's past or future are interesting and good at hooking your interest, but other than that it's an endless string of "collect 20 bear asses."

Over all 7/10 game, it really feels like it should've been a few hours longer but eh, I didn't expect the same love mainline gets.

You can beat the game pretty handily in about 14 to 20 hours if you don't care about NG+ content or filling out the compendium, so even if you end up not caring for it you're only out a few hours a night or a couple long weekends at worst.
