Why did tenna only bring in 3 contestants anyways? Most tv shows that have contestants usually have like 12 or more contestants who slowly get eliminated in each round until only two finalists remain for the final round, seems like it would be pretty interesing too, with a lot of possible replayability value as you can choose who to team up in the team-based rounds like susie or ralsei or whatever, imagine hanging out with lancer or rouxls kaard or etc, all the character dynamics that couldve been... and ofc, choosing certain teammates could give you hints towards the chapter's schizoboss (if it wasnt the knight ofc), losing and having to walk out of the studio alone wouldnt necessarily mean you're missing out in lore and stuff either, as you could probably explore the outside areas on your own and probably get easier access to the secret boss (which you could still access even if you never lose, it would simply be more complicated), but basically you would still get battles and stuff, at some point, there could be like, "two bands can choose to bring someone who lost the contest back into their group and continue playing!", meaning you wont be separated from susie and ralsei forever, of course, there are still scripted losses for multiple characters, so its not like toby would have to go full neet trying to code and write over a bajillion alternative scenarios just for one chapter, but it would still be fun regardless

We got some new elements, but I find it interesting the "magic" element is tied to the book Darkners since it implies you need a magic stat to even read - Kris's magic stat is ALWAYS 0 outside of equipment and he refuses to read for you outside of the library upper floors and the ralsei tutorial books to my knowledge, Susie starts with a magic stat of 1 which increases little over the chapters except when you win against Gerson she gains +4 to magic: while that helps with Rude Buster it might also mean her reading comprehension has increased too. Oh, and Ralsei and Noelle have the highest magic stats, and both characters are the book smart types.

Basically could be important, could be unimportant but the implication make for a good theorycraft

There's some things I don't like thinking about. Some things we shouldn't learn about characters, especially considering how things are in the game. Think of it like reading a book-- you have zero control there, right? You have nothing better to do than imagine what that world is like and connect with the characters. The only choice you get on rails like that is to close the book. Honestly I wouldn't dare truly compare undertale or deltarune to a book, but I can at least point to the story being told. They're both mediums for stories, and like it or not, videogames make you part of that story. You can close and open the game, save, load, kill, explore... But you're still part of the story being told. You drive it forward. If your choices matter, then you are writing it.
"What if they feel bad" then becomes an aspect of that story, or perhaps not at all. Criticizing someone for not exploring every single nook and cranny because they don't want to hurt a character's feelings is part of the story now. It may suck that you're wrested out of more of the game, but for goodness sake you mention it yourself: the extra characterization of these characters means you can actually tell a better story due to it. If you're exploring for the sake of exploring content, you're doing the story an injustice. Of course, if you don't believe the game has a story to tell or simply don't care, that's also part of the game.
That's the whole point of genocide existing in undertale, the whole schtick with sans. If you're not playing the game for the story, you're doing it for another reason. You don't want to care, nor ever did, for the characters and simply wish to see everything there is-- until it ends.

I believe her coming late to class is what derails the actual events of the Prophecy, as Kris would've went with Noelle to the supply closet to get chalk if Susie didn't show up. In other words, Susie is "destined" to break the prophecy from the moment that shows up.
To that end, Snowgrave is (You) forcing things to return to what the prophecy ordains by dragging Noelle into the fray, arbitrarily making her "stronger" so things can proceed as according to the Prophecy. Now, why would we want to do this? Perhaps the way Susie breaks the prophecy leads to an outcome that we don't to see.

This is an odd one, since we know Gaster's stated goal. To create a new future with us, what exactly that means is a mystery.
While friend has no describable motive, although it is involved in the Chapter 3 Swordroute and Ralsei's Darkner cutscene implies it might be a Darkner born or Susie's feat. Simultaneously we know Noelle interacted with it in the past, and the knock off game control Asriel used had its same colors.
We haven't seen it physically in the dark world, and it seems associated with the Secret and Super Bosses and by extension their freedom thing, and it also seems to have an affinity with Technology. Like when it hides in the vending machine that's placed in the back stage room
Its very hard to tell what friend wants or even what its capabilities are. At the very least it seems to be associated with secrets, specifically video game secrets.

Snowgrave is the breaking of the prophecy. Both Snowgrave and the Shadow Crystal routes (because they've been focused on Susie so far) are going to break the prophecy in different ways. Normal non-Crystal will be fulfilling the prophecy in an unfulfilling way, spurring an unaware player to either bust their asses off getting the Shadow Crystals, or taking a shortcut with Snowgrave.

Yead it's pretty off, espically when you take W.ogg into account. At first it seemed like a Gaster reference with W. ogg and D.ogg
But now we have C.ogg which is an ambient version of Carol's (unreleased) theme and D.ogg is probably an ambient/creepy version of Dess/December's theme which Raise up Your Bat probably is, or is at least another take on as well. Odd that it appears in the weird route in a deliberately negative context in a situation where Dess and the Knight aren't involved, I've seen people connect this to The Red Soul = Dess of at least half of here, but again I think Toby is trying to draw a parallel or deliberately trying to evoke the connection in our minds, not revealing the red soul we control actually belonged to Dess.
I think sometimes the community takes music based theory crafting too seriously, especially when sometimes its just vibes based.
Again like with the man and the waltz of Seccom Masada, Toby danced around the concept of Gaster, almost deliberately evoking him. Only to reveal it he was only trying to evoke Gaster, it wasn't literally Gaster.
The Chapter 5 teaser of the Deltarune Website also has h.ogg which in context of the other two themes being about the Holidays, probably is a shortened version of Holiday. Like D is for December, and C is for Carol.

I agree, ironically her intro shows her being so villainous on the surface level I think she has to be. Especially when you take into account of how she's going out of her way so support Asgore and seems to be trying to help him.
There's also the matter of the prophecy. It exists in the Lightworld already, and if somebody understands what it really is, like Ralsei, they can then take action informed by future knowledge.
If the Roaring is going to happen no matter what, and is going to be stopped by the Heroes after it begins no matter what, then you may as well try to cause it in a controlled manner that makes it easier for the heroes.

This isn't Dess, it's Noelle. Noelle's reality where she enters the dark world with Kris is abandoned and left there as part of the code. She's a placeholder, so to speak, for what the start of the game should have been. She should have walked through the door with Kris and had the door shut behind her, just like how it happened with Susie and Kris.
But it never did happen.
The awful thing is, "Kris" had the savefile for that outcome already there, at the start of the game.
And we overwrote it.

Not a Dark World concept but more of a secret boss concept. This idea spawned from the unfinished final boss on Asriel's computer, but I was thinking of an unfinished protagonist character. The secret boss's dilemma would be an inversion of Spamton. Instead of their reality being shattered by the fact they're a puppet, it's shattered by the fact that they aren't a puppet. Pre-schizo, they were a plucky and uplifting type. They always went with the flow and trusted in things being able to perfectly work themselves out. Until, their game stopped being worked on and the creator ultimately left it behind. They kept their chin up for a while, but began to isolate more and more. Until eventually coming into contact with a higher being (Gaster) or a Shadow Crystal, revealing the truth of not only the Dark World, but the Light World as well. They learn about (You). They were never going to fill out the role they were promised, because (You) were not going to play as them. Broken by this revelation, their personality completely shatters.
This is when (You) and the vessel you're controlling enter the Dark World. They instantly know your presence and work from the shadows to draw you in. Possibly with the promise of a strong item? A secret? Whatever happens, it results in a fight. The plan is to destroy your vessel in the hopes they'll take it's place.

I don't understand how that could happen. This is some, "the negative space where you don't exist is a person", type stuff I don't think Toby's ever done. It's just so different from the themes of fate, fatalism, and fiction that the story is dealing with are . I just don't know how you could come up with the idea.
I don't think Dess being the voice has a lot of evidence, nor am I really that attached to it. It wouldn't be out of left field and fits with what we know about the story right now.
I suppose the voice in the code could be an alternate universe Noelle, but why would Noelle not entering the Dark World in chapter 1 cause an alternate universe version of herself to be trapped in the code? I could see myself kind of agreeing if she NEVER entered a dark world, then the how could be answered by the voice being her Darkworld form, but we see her in a Darkworld and uses a Dark World form.
Noelle as is still has the abilities of her supposed original prophecy self, being able to equip bow amors and use certain types of swords. Like if Noelle never entered a Darkworld and Noelle still had a DW sprite in the game since chapter 1 and still had all of that unused 1:1 text with Kris, I could see it, but as is, I don't think there's any evidence.

I tend to disregard theories that posit these types of, 'the player is bad for playing the game', both because OFF and more importantly the Earth Bound Halloween Hack already did it. The same hack which Toby is embarrassed by. Of course I also just dislike this type of hackery, so I'm biased here. But I don't think Toby is that interested in treading well trod ground, especially when he's already working on the OFF remake.
All of this just seems so unrelated to Deltarune's current narrative preoccupations as well as the rules of the world as we know them.

Adding onto this because I thought of a Weird Route variation of the boss. Ironically, the Weird Route would actually be a bit of a positive influence on this character. Since he would have inherent knowledge of (You), he would be aware of your actions from previous Dark Worlds. Possibly going on a Chapter 2-style murder spree or something equally fucked up. With this new knowledge about the player, the concept he has idolized since his conception, he would most likely realize that his nature does not align with yours. Being an intended mary-sue self insert, he's supposed to have unquestionably heroic and good ideals.
With the realization that he does not want (You) to control him, he's able to break free of his intended purpose and actually become a real hero.
Doesn't change a whole lot, but the Weird Route is about changing the context of a situation and this seems like a pretty no-brainer approach.

The thing is, there is no clear divide between "real" Kris and (You)Kris. As I said before, Susie sees the combination of both.

She does, but the important part isn't that. It's Noelle's response to it. Noelle firmly believes that her Kris - the SOUL-less Kris - is absolutely abysmal at flirting. Kris is in reality two different people people sharing a body with seperate and distinct personalities and skill sets. Hell, they even move differently.

I agree. In fact, I don't think we're overwriting any dialogue choices at all. Our options are drawn from a combination of things that Kris and the SOUL would say.

It is impossible to deny that Kris moves, acts and talks visibly differently when the SOUL is inside of them, and also does not share knowledge with the SOUL - they know the bunker codes when we do not, and can play the piano when we cannot.

It's also hard to deny that the SOUL has been within Kris for longer than we've been controlling Kris. They've had that cage for a while, and the behavior changes when Kris puts the SOUL inside them are significant enough that Susie would have noticed.

Different behavior + has been going on since before the game started = not caused by the player. The personality and skill changes has to come from the SOUL, which means that the SOUL is its own person and not simply a mindless avatar of the player.

Even then, people around town note that he is unusually talkative during chapter 1 and he is usually just wandering around aimlessly, and Susie calls him "school zombie" in chapter 2. In fact, Kris' behavior during the_newest_girl also corresponds with SOVLless behavior we've seen - acting like a zombie and then suddenly showing great reflexes.

I think that's a big hint that chapter 1 was the first time when Kris had SOUL inside. Noelle interacted with him a lot during chapter 2, and while his behavior was similar to his 'recent' behavior, it seems to be the first time she noticed that his speech pattern was completely off.

...honestly, on the subject of player behavior? I'd like to take a moment to examine the way skipping chapters is handled. I think the fact that it's even possible at all tells us a lot about what's going on, since the save/load and chapter select are in-universe canon things thanks to Gaster connecting us to the SOUL being the literal first thing that happens in the game. If we skip a chapter, then events * Proceed without us. We aren't part of the narrative and the characters make their own choices without our influence...and yet, Noelle still notices that Kris is different. To me, that says that Kris's altered behavior is because of the SOUL itself, not the player. The player is an external force Gaster has introduced that's only capable of nudging the plot, not changing it...without Snowgrave and the secret bosses added to the mix, of course.

Ralsei doesn't have an ability to travel between Dark Worlds, neither he is residing in someone's inventory constantly. Instead someone just carries him between the Dark Worlds

My theory on the shadow crystals is that they show the future. The thing that Jevil and Spamton saw in the future is the same missing prophecy slide Susie smashed, and what's on that slide is all the Darkworlds being sealed forever.
I was never happy with the theories that posted it showed Deltarune as a game, as the DW are already fiction and adding another layer of fiction on top of that doesn’t change much for Darkners. In UT the True Pacifist ending has the characters leave the underground, and in a meta sense leave the confines of the narrative. By refusing to do a true reset we accept this, something that Flowey talks about.
I assume this is the same for DR, but if all the Dark Fountains were sealed and no more Darkworlds can ever be created, that means Darkners never has a chance at that freedom. They’ll never be allowed to have their happy ending and are all doomed while the Lightners can live in a world free of Darkness.
I think this their also nicely ties together what Susie saw in the final prophecy that fits in a way the betrayal or death hypothesis don't. That and it matches with the games themes of fate, freedom and fatalism, with all the secret bosses (including the would be secret boss Ramb) fit with well.

Ralsei isn't working with the Knight, but knows who the Knight is and the motives, and by proxy is "working" with the Knight.

I’ve heard of a couple different theories on the prophecy. One of the interesting ones is the Recursive Prophecy theory where the prophecy is a sort of IT/Mystery Incorporated type situation where it repeats every generation with Susie, Ralsei, Noelle, and Kris just being the newest generation of people who’ve gotten involved.
Over the years various characters like Gerson, and other factions have tried to influence the prophecy.
It’s an interesting if a bit of a fanfic-y idea, although the biggest question would be who filled what roles, especially since there’s no human that we know of in the last generation, and who was the Darkner.
Toriel or Carol could fit into the role of the Hope Crossed Girl or second girl, and with a certain liberal interpretation of the Prophecy Asgore could probably have been a Dark Prince.
Although I don’t think it's likely, with Carol being aware of the prophecy and Asgore having a Dark Shard(whether it's a piece of the Knight, Carol’s sword, or a Shadow Crystal) I think at least they have entered Darkworlds in the past.

I had a weirdest dream about Deltarune, it seemed like some massively important lore dump, to the point I was actually trying to make screenshots inside the dream, but now that I woke up, it feels like some excerpt from a fanfic about some bizarre AU I know nothing about.

This is interesting. I could hazard a guess and say that it's Dess. But it might not be, depending on the degree of disappearance. There is a spectrum ranging from "died a long time ago" like with UT Asriel to "gone from time and space" like Gaster.

Susie would be the ideal candidate considering how she's an unhappy outsider at the start. Kris might be justifying this sacrifice to himself by making her as happy and comfortable as possible before leading her to the slaughter. It would be messed up but I can see it.

Asgore got the black shard because the Knight tried to take him into the bunker during Chapter 3.

I think everything with getting Undyne to Kris's house was a backup plan-B of sorts in case ASGORE is just too fucking strong to capture, which he seemingly was.
Knight took him into the bunker late at night, Asgore got as strong as his Undertale counterpart due to the Dark World boost and managed to fend off the Knight long enough to bolt out the great door.

Alphys and Napsta Blook both talk about how Undyne knew stuff about the Bunker/Shelter. So the symbols are probably who has the code, it makes more sense as well. The chessboard is probably the most interesting one. You have a Knight, a King, a Queen, a Bishop, a Flower and a sword.
Its a bit off how the sword(Kris) and Queen are both white, but King, the Flower(Asgore), Knight, and Bishop are all black pieces. I guess in chess theory either Asgore or Kris could be the Pawn/Rook here, Flowers and Swords aren't exactly normal pieces.
Although now that this chessboard exists, it's a bit odd we don't have a Bishop which is the one other recognizable piece...

I had this relatively recent Deltarune Asgore fantheme on my playlist that encapsulated his deltarune iteration so perfectly, but it got privated when the new chapters released. The current list theory I put the most stake in is that its for allied Lightners/Dustners we'll meet in future chapters.
Catty and Bratty have their weird competitive friendship/romance thing being built up to in the background while Jockington and catti are friends of the main cast. Sans is being set up for next chapter and if we see him we'll probably see Papyrus.
Sans also connects us seeing Asriel to us seeing Papyrus, Toriel comments Asriel is arriving next week which lines up with the festival. So a lot of the misc names including the ones I've already mentioned could be for a festival Dark World.
We also already saw Undyne in the Light World and Alphys seems to be the only person who both knows a bit about the bunker but isn't in on the conspiracy surrounding it like Alvin might be. So if another Lightner tags along to the Bunker she also has a decent chance of appearing there, separate from her high chance of being in a festival Dark World.

Going back to Noelle's blog she does also run into an egg that runs away due to happiness and a Pipis. Honestly while I'd like the Egg and Eggs = friend, Noelle only mentions Friend in reference to Pluey/Mike minigames counterpart in Catpetterz, where we can run into it in DR and Cat Petterz the RPG which is a Dragon Blazer's rip off and is probably what Tenna based his game on/the game Ramb allows us to play.
So I don't think there's an actual strong link between the man, friend, and the egg. Instead I think the link with ERAM, the Knight and the Shadow Crystals is stronger. If Dess Knight = ERAM of course.

Aside from that, I don't think Dess necessarily needs to be controlled or be evil. If you talk to King after Chapter 3 about Jevil, he'l reveal Jevil was working on behalf of the Knight and was working on future knowledge, likely from the prophecy. Meaning since at least Chapter 1 the Knight has likely had access to the prophecy and is making their movements using its information.
Information that includes facts like the true heroes only arising once the roaring starts, the eventuality of the Roaring, and the fact the Roaring will be stopped. So the Knight doesn't even necessarily have to be trying to end the world, they could be someone who decided to take on the role of Knight while pursuing another agenda. So Dess, or whoever the Knight is doesn;t necessarily have to be mind controlled or evil in order to act as the Knight.

I don't remember the TP cost, but in chapter 3 the uses cap out to 5 so you can just grind it out quickly in the few fights you have when escapign from Tenna. The amount of uses you need to grind carry over to Chapter 4 though, so don't worry too much about grinding it all out in Chapter 3 alone, especially when Gerson auto-upgrades it upon defeating him.

On the subject of the /egg page itself, Noelle can't remember the name of the egg - whatever hatched from it inherited the Forgotten Man's state of being nameless. That's as close to hard confirmation that Noelle's egg came from eggman that we'll ever get.

The "secret cats' link at the top of the /egg page also leads to the post where Noelle talks about encountering FRIEND in Cat Petterz. So that's an extremely strong link between the Forgotten Man and the Cat Petterz egg, and a tenuous but very deliberate (and literal!) link between the egg and FRIEND.

I mean even then, the Egg's entire thing is that it doesn't hatch. It just ended up leaving one day, 'due to happiness', which at this stage could mean anything.

I may be a bit hesitant due to how this clashes against some of my own theories. I think the Knight, Strange Someone, ERAM, and FRIEND alongside Carol, Kris, and possibly a third person in the Lightworld are some combination of the working with each other or the same person. That may sound like a big list, but King says Jevil started preaching about the Knight's Glory after he met the strange someone, so those two have to be working together or the same person. We already know Carol and Kris are working together, and ERAM seems familiar with Kris but doesn't seem to be Carol. FRIEND is just kind of around and works for ERAM, I think its some type of pet or creature being directed to take action from afar.

The reason I bring all of that up is that through the Knight, and the Shadow Crystals are connected by Jevil and the crying star book in Chapter 4. So we have team Shadow Crystal. And while the Egg Man seems either involved, or aware of what happened in the past, he doesn't seem to be working in concrete with them even if he's connected to FRIEND somehow. Like the entire Weird Route in Chapter 2 forces you to get a Shadow Crystal while taking away the opportunity to get the Egg Man since Spamton lives in his dumpster now.
I'm not gonna speculate if the team Shadow Crystal(w/ Kris) WANTS the Weird Route, or is just ambivalent towards it. But the Weird Route locking you out of completing the Egg Quest has to mean SOMETHING.

Rude Buster scales with both attack and magic, but does it scale better with one stat than the other?
If it scales equally with both, than Dealmakers 5 magic would be a better Rude Buster amp than Jevilstails 2 attack and 2 magic.

There's also the factor, that like Gaster, this is all ARG shit and not stuff in the game, not even meta-text in the game. So even if it seems to mean something I don't value it very highly. Espically since the Egg Man isn't connected to FRIEND in the actual game like FRIEND is with ERAM and by extension the Shadow Crystals, Shadow Mantle, Seam, and the Knight stuff. Juust looking at what we have in the game, I'd guess the Egg Man is the first voice in the intro.

I guess it just seems a bit odd to me for the Egg Man to also be working in conjunction with or controlling FRIEND. Like at minimum assuming Dess Knight is the Strange someone(the assuming she's also ERAM), the conspiracy has Carol(Voice on the phone could also be Strange someone), Kris, probably a third person since Carol refers to Kris in the third person on the phone, FRIEND, and possibly Asgore. Not gonna mention is Gaster has any connection to their group, honestly I don't think they NEED Gaster since all their motivations and actions makes sense without him involved.
Then you add the Egg Man on top of that?
When the intro implies there sides to this conflict due to the second voice in the intro interrupting Gaster, meaning not everybody has to be apart of he same faction. There's at minimum two groups here.

Obviously you want to max out both as much as you can, but attack has over doble the influence of magic. However her UltimateHeal scales better off Magic in Chapter 4 once it becomes BetterHeal. Magic * 7 + 15 (and + 30 if you grind out her separate Healing stat)

Perfectly understandable. So here's how I see things: You've got two different teams here.

You've got Team Prophecy/SMT Law, who want to keep things on track and are probably associated with the Annoying White Dog. Their goal is to make sure the prophecy plays out as it's supposed to, primarily through the containment of the SOUL (the only entity with true free will through the connection with the Angel/you). Motives are unknown, but looking at things optimistically perhaps it's in order for things to get a guaranteed mostly-happy ending. This includes Kris for sure and probably the Knight, and going by how the Annoying Dog railroaded you into going to the library in Chapter 2 they're probably actively working with it too.

Then you've got Team Freedom/SMT Chaos, associated with the Friendly Black Cat. Their goal is to subvert the prophecy and free the SOUL from the cage. Recruitment for Team Freedom seems to involve an encounter with FRIEND, who lifts the veil and teaches the recruit how the world really works. So far, every Freedom Schizo except Gerson has had a strong association with FRIEND.

1. Jevil was recruited by Seam, who as a handpuppet cat that remembers saves (should be impossible for anyone who only exists on the Deltarune layer, as that's handled on the DEVICE layer) is almost certainly FRIEND somehow. Either by literally being worn by FRIEND, or simply being a puppet like Spamton was becoming.

2. FRIEND was the one giving Spamton advice on the phone.

3. Ramb is sitting next to the vending machine with FRIEND in it in the backroom.

I don't think that the Freedom Schizos are actually supposed to be the ones who get the hadow Crystals. The Knight may or may not be bringing them in, but...something about the whole thing feels off. Specifically, about how Spamton got his - he found it inside NEO, which is something he wasn't supposed to get, or even know about.
