It's an incredible story about a horse that ushers in a powerful new era as an undefeatable competitor with monstrous speed, only to suddenly disappear without warning. This is Agnes Tachyon, and she doesn't even blink before the Japan Cup. That's how incredible the attention to detail is here. Those that follow in her wake have to deal with the feeling of only winning by sheer luck due to her being pulled off the board. Basically, it's crippling imposter syndrome. Meanwhile, Tachyon is trying to cope with her departure from racing by having others achieve her dreams for her, to outsmart her destiny as an umamusume. And rather than pure fiction, its based on an actual era of Japanese horse racing.

Amazing soundtrack, too. A modern classic. What's not to like?

New Era is a psychological anime. Jungle Pocket is haunted by the ghost of Tachyon, who is later to be revealed as herself, and in this scene she shatters the self-imposed barrier of being the imposter. The imagery in the anime represents the psychological perspective of the characters, their inner-thoughts and the monsters who serve both as an obstacle and an inspiration. A particularly neat scene is Tachyon chasing after her own mirage, chasing her limits until they broke to pieces, and shattering her own leg in the process.

Umamusume has surpassed Secretariat in popularity. It's a love letter to the intricacies and history of Japanese horse racing, it covers various tracks and why they're important, the differences between track lengths and turf, types of horses like front runners and closers, famous incidents in racing history (https://youtu.be/P26Opa7F5g0), and it puts a face to all these elements in an endearing way. Instinctively acting with disgust towards things you don't understand is generally a signifier for poor emotional intelligence.

Umamusume has generated 2.4 billion US dollars in revenue in less than half a decade despite being a new IP. One Piece, at its absolute peak, pulls less than 150 million dollars a year. Cinderella Gray also received much higher ratings than One Piece is currently. In fact, if One Piece aired alongside seasonals it would surely be cancelled, but fortunately for fans it's something for little kids to watch after school and is part of a different programming block. Still leagues away from anponman and pokemon though.

And yet it has half of Umamusume's yearly revenue, and underperforms versus its actual competitors, pokemon and anpanman. I live in a Japanese neighborhood. Their kids all have pokemon and anpanman toys, no one piece to be found. In fact, I am a bit perplexed about how they can enjoy this bean paste head so much, but hey, that's kids for you. Personally, I'm more interested in media for adults, you know, seinen, like Umamusume. It tells stories I find more mentally stimulating and relatable.

Funny that you mention it, Umamusume has a hit manga which is publishing in the same magazine as famous seinen classics such as Kingdom, Usogui, and Vagabond. Everything Young Jump touches turns to gold these days, easily my favorite magazine of all time, shame /a/ is too busy crying about WSJ.

All japanese media is kept afloat by secondary revenue streams. It's kind of their thing. Even studio ghibli survives off merchandise. This is partly why One Piece is kind of shit, because all the characters are ugly and unlikable, you can't slap Luffy's face on a toy car like you can with anpanman or pikachu.

The anime series are mid overall but have some cute highlights, meanwhile this movie had zero likable characters and nonsensical story progression, with zero soul to keep things together. It's fun to see the parallels of something I kind of just took for granted as simply existing and being a part of every day life. But obviously things like the Kentucky Derby are very popular here, with 16.7 million viewers last year, the highest its been since 1989, the year I was born.

I find the usage of the soundtrack as a whole to be really interesting. There's a lot of moments when you'd expect music, like the races, but it's intentionally absent to create an entirely different feeling. Overall the movie has a really strong melancholic overtone, the music is reserved for more personal moments. It's quite different.

I really liked the silence of the races, as it added more weight to them (at least to me), especially in the first half of the movie. As for the tone of the movie, it did feel quite melancholic at times, and the OST played a huge role in that.

Movie was alright, animation was great but the side characters were really weak. Pocket and Tachy are great but idk uma's obsession with shoving in too many characters to focus on in a short amount of time. They are literally for gripping onto and killing other horses. That's the sole reason they exist, and like tusks, they are primarily found on males. In domestic horses they are manually ground down by vetenarians because they are so big they get in the way of the bit and cause discomfort.

This show will always be deeper, more poetic, and more philosophical than your shallow ass shounenfag Dandadan. Even your corny weak ass Acro Silky plot doesn't come close to this.

The movie focuses on Jungle Pocket with two important supporting characters who have real-life significance, Fuji Kiseki and Agnes Tachyon. The whole story is about people searching for the next successor to Fuji Kiseki. Agnes beat Jungle Pocket by a mile, but her dream was cut short by injury. She couldn’t reach the impossible heights she was aiming for.

Pocket, with the same team and trainer as Fuji Kiseki, and the motivation to defeat her "shadow rival" Agnes, rises to success. The story is just beautiful and genuinely poetic.

This doesn't justify the overanimation and it honestly makes things even more hilariously absurd when put into perspective. I can't even begin to fathom how you go from a gacha game made by, presumably, some japanese horse racing autist(s) about training and racing kemonomimi horse girls into a fucking deep psychological anime series that warrants that sort of animation as if the horse girls are literally fighting (or racing in this case) for the fate of the world, like some Gurren Lagann tier level of dramatics. Anime truly is amazing.

It's because thoroughbred horses are actually pretty fucked up, like on a genetic level. They have very fragile bodies and instinctually are bred and trained to engage in behavior that quickly obliterates said bodies. Umamusume are similar to thoroughbred horses in that they literally live to run. Any horse that does not want to run is removed from the gene pool.

He's shitposting but he's also right. The story and characters in Beginning of a New Era are weak. I've said it before, but the movie is more of a sakuga showcase than a storytelling one. Which is not to say it's bad, but outside of the pretty animation sequences, it's just not as good as S2 or CG. With how many characters the movie crammed in, it would have been better as a standard 12-13 episode omnibus-style show than a single movie, with each of the major characters getting 2-4 episodes for mini-arcs.

I think the only real big fumble is Manhattan Cafe has TOO much character, rather than like Dotou sort of just being a ditzy sidekick to Opera O in Road to the Top and not much else. There's enough there that it makes you curious to know what she's about, but her storyline is resolved very indirectly. She's there because she was a rival to Tachyon in real life, so it's assumed you'll either appreciate the reference, or be intrigued enough to want to learn more about her. But I think the movie in general addresses its main storyline quite well without meandering too much on anything else. It doesn't need 4 episodes of Jungle Pocket jobbing after the Derby, s2 already did that sort of misery porn and quite frankly a montage is enough given Pocket's character and how she just bears with it, and I think Fuji's character development is fine with being reactive as a secondary character and was handled nicely. The subject matter of the story on the whole is pretty interesting and it really sets up both Tachyon and Jungle Pocket as interesting characters, and obviously they are the main focus.
