I just feel so bad for her. Frankly, I never really found her attractive, mostly because she reminded me of girls and women I knew in the real world, but maybe that's why I empathize for her so much more than any of the other Evangelion girls.

What's so distressing about all the Evangelion girls is there's no easy way to fix them. It's not like the reason they are the way they are is because of some contrived writing designed to force them into some cliche stereotype, they're disturbingly like real people in the sense that their problems are caused by literal myriads of things going wrong all throughout their lives, and simply removing one of them isn't enough to change anything.

I just want her to be happy. To not hate herself. I thought she was such a bitch and thought nothing further of her until I started watching the show again. Why is this bothering me so much now?

for me one of the main things that makes eva character feel so authentic is how they can't articulate their own problems, they don't what they want or don't want what they think they want and that keeps them running in emotional circles as much as whatever hurt them in the first place does.

I find interesting that the characters are depressed at the beginning of the show but by the end they are mostly bothered by terrible problems happening because of the conspiracy.

What makes it extra gross is how adult characters are never punished for their failures. Not just in their failure to ensure the heath of the pilots, but also their dog shit command structure. In the battles where they go in knowing exactly what to do, it often comes down to the wire. Half the time, Misato and Ritsuko send them out with absolutely no idea whatsoever. How are they allowed to stay in command after sending Asuka straight into an enormous fuck off energy beam, and Shinji into a black hole? Shinji would have died multiple times if not for 01 bailing him out. Rei actually dies. Asuka’s true display of skill was not getting killed by her own commanders.

For Shinji, it's not just his father abandoning him at the train station; that's the defining moment, the one that stands out the most, but it's reinforced by how he's treated over the next decade. The bicycle incident may well be the thing that breaks him: all of the adults around him ignore everything he says, pass judgement on him without even investigating the matter, and basically teach him that nothing he does matters and that there's no point to life. After that, he goes from living (barely) to simply existing, and the only mention of any proactive action on his part is when he threw a fit offscreen a few years ago and stopped meeting his father at his mother's graveside.

Asuka was taught just the opposite: in Germany, she was praised as the best pilot, and essentially taught that piloting was the *only* thing that would keep people from ignoring her like her mother did because she was too busy (before) or missing half her mind/soul (after). Her treatment actually makes Shinji's far more suspicious, because it's more blatant.

And then there's Rei. I don't think I have to describe the cruelty, manipulation, and outright brainwashing that she was put through.

It's not openly spelled out, but a logical assumption is that the kids were *meant* to kill all of the Angels and then fall apart (Asuka and Shinji) or sacrifice their lives like good little dolls (Rei). They were raised from the beginning to be tools, not children, and while they needed to grow up and take some responsibility for their own lives, it's understandable that they had neither the courage nor even the understanding of how to do so. They were set up.

What, are you stupid? The whole point of the anime was that you could fix them. Asuka had the same problem as Shinji, though for slightly different reasons, and she projected her flawed way of dealing with it differently. But the whole point was that it could be fixed, and the solution was to let your guard down, let yourself be vulnerable and risk getting hurt, which would ideally lead to other people understanding and accepting you for who you really are, flaws and all.
I mean, that's the fucking theme of the anime. Shinji rejected people in a more traditional way by being an autistic, shy, low self-esteem sperg who pushed people away because he hated himself, while Asuka's way of coping was to be the best EVA pilot, subconsciously hoping that the praise she'd receive would make up for what her insane mother put her through. She also had a second coping mechanism, which she shared with Misato, which was seducing people to make herself feel desired.
Regardless, the point is that most of the characters could be fixed if they'd pull their heads out of their asses, stop being defensive and open up to someone.

We don't really see enough of her home life to make a judgement. Certainly the way he talks in private in the single scene he's in is callous, or at the very least irresponsible, but we don't see how he actually treated her. I think it's a lot more likely that their relationship was like her relationship with her stepmother, superficially cordial but emotionally distant. You know, I’m really curious how things could have changed in Shinji was a well-adjusted teen with the usual MC maturity / wisdom boost and not an alien entity like his father, Right off the bat I could see him being more stoic in the face of physical pain caused by Eva feedback and he would easily accept his role because everyone around him depends on him doing so. He gets into a relationship with Asuka quickly and easily, and I’m unclear how that impacts things with Rei. I wonder if Misato would try harder to wedge herself into his life if she saw him being strong? The relationship with Gendo would be interesting, because a strong Shini would be able to engage with his father and try to understand what’s going on with him instead of just demanding things one-sidedly — but then Gendo is also an alien entity who doesn’t act like a human being so it’s hard to say. Ritsuko….might be dangerous if Shinji tries to latch onto her too much, her emotions are abnormal and he may not realize this based on her normal high-IQ demeanor. In terms of the fight against the Angels, probably nothing changes because the Angels were exactly as strong as the plot required them to be, so with a stronger Shinji those battles can’t be any more difficult, although there might be surprising outcomes if he can do a better job with communicating with those Angels like Leliel and Tabris who want to communicate. He should be able to pull Asuka back from being mindfucked by Arael (maybe, the trauma doesn’t seem like it would cause that level of behavior destruction). I’m not sure what an official relationship between Asuka and Shinji would mean — maybe nothing? Do their Evas like it or not? Does Rei feel left out, and if so, what does that change? Does she still come in clutch when she has to? I don’t think Misato would sabotage things to the extent of, say, letting there be a pregnancy but will she become a point of friction just to make sure Shinji stays in-hand?
