What makes him worse than he was in part 1 is the fact that he is no longer a character that drives the plot forward. He’s become a reactive character and now instead of driving the plot, the plot comes to him (if that makes sense) he still has goals but he doesn’t actively go after them anymore. I don’t think this is a writing flaw because it’s a continuation that makes sense in my opinion. The only reason part 1 denji was constantly on the move was because he had someone like makima holding the reins and thrusting him into shit left and right. Whether it was a new dream or a new powerful enemy he set out to face. Now that makima’s gone I think part 2 denji’s behavior makes sense. He’s so done with everything after all he’s been through to the point he didn’t even care enough to rage at yoshida despite thinking he’s the one who killed nayuta. It all does feel very defeatist so I get why people are turned off by it. It is OK for u to not like the direction of denji’s character but I don’t like how there a people who will act like part 2 denji is some mistake and his character is objectively shit as if he doesn’t have a valid reason to be so done with everything
I think one of the things I like about chainsaw man is that if it was written by any other manga author it’d be a revenge story but it’s not. I’m not saying that’d be a bad thing because denji has valid reasons to crash out. I just like that fujimoto is exploring other things in how people react to loss instead of the typical “AUGHH I must have revenge on this person” plus he already did that with fire punch.
The way things are going I honestly think denji is being set up to have a pretty happy ending and all things leads towards the final step in his development which is thinking without his dick. Last thread it was briefly discussed Asa's status as "Chainsaw Woman" being either a pun or not, it's both and the reason is because Asa embodies the same general themes as Denji does - their mirrored interaction with the Falling devil demonstrates that in the most explicit way possible, their yearning for fulfilling lives, for love, for sex and most importantly, their guilt.

Asa's desire to save Denji has been one of the main driving forces for Part 2's entire plot and the reason behind her obsession lies in the central angst surrounding her character - that she is unable to save anyone that is dear to her, her mother, her cat, her best friend...so what do you think it will be of her "lover"?
Take picrel per example, here a stranger praises Asa as a savior for rescuing her cat, she then breaks down crying right after because she doesn't feel like a savior but a murderer instead as she got her mother killed.

With all of that in mind and to add, what do you think it means for Asa to wish to "make Denji happy"? we know that Asa is being earnest, the story continuously proves that Asa's feelings for Denji are the most sincere form of love, do you really think the story will give her that? when we know that she is inbound to experience something that mirrors Denji's most traumatic moment in Part 1. At the core of her character always lied the question of whether she'll be Denji's savior or his killer and the story has never been subtle about that.

The writing is all over the wall to the point where it would take an enormous deliberate subversion on Fujimoto's part for it to not be the case.
