my sister was homeschooled for the last few years of high school. my parents essentially just cited "woke" as the reason. i saw her get deradicalized(? probably not the right word) in real time. it's sick.
speaking of supressing queerness specifically, even though not directly related to homeschooling, my sister confided in me that for about a year, she identified as nonbinary among friends on discord and in person. she was persuaded to stop when our mother searched through her phone, likely obsessively looking through hundreds of messages. i didn't learn of this until nearly 2 years later
as far as how she is right now, i don't know if she thinks it was a "phase" and it wasn't, or if it was actually a phase and she's moved on. outwardly, she seems to be continually invested in the protestant christian church she and our parents attend, so i'm inclined to believe she's in the deep end of it. i hope she finds a way out. i am of the opinion that christianity in and of itself is not inherently destructive, because there are branches of christianity and specific religious figures whose interpretations of the bible do not condemn homosexuality, being transgender, etc. as sins. however, in america and many other parts of the world, the christian establishment very much do interpret the bible in that way. overwhelmingly so, in fact. that's why i hope she finds a way out of it.
