BR Template addition for /k/ Archived /j/
Is there any way to get another rule/template added to the ban request form?

Something along the lines of "Political discussion pertaining to firearms regulation and control should be posted on /pol/" or similar?

Especially with the changing US political climate, it definitely might help curb these threads if we could throw warning out for something like this and just add the contents of the second sticky as a reply in the first to save index real-estate.

Hey everyone. I haven't been jannying in a short while because I was prepping for the hurricane and cleaning up after. My hospital shifts have also been all messed up due to mandatory pre/post storm shifts. Should be getting back to my normal life here. Luckily we missed the worst of the storm and only caught the southeast edge.

Anyways, I haven't disappeared!

5 years a Janny Archived /j/
Well, I've officially been a Janitor for 5 years now.

Honestly, I don't really post much in the discord outside of moderation, but I really wanted to express how much I appreciate the opportunity to help clean up the website I love. I've been browsing 4chan for over 15 now and have met some great people and even some lifelong friends. I’ve had thousands of hours of laughs, arguments, and have learned so much. I mean, this website even helped me on my path to becoming a Software Engineer. I’m not sure I would be as successful as I am now without /g/ shitting on me and my code for so many years lmao. If I could go back in time, I would change nothing. Overall, this dumb-ass anonymous weeb-centric shit-filled forum has been an overwhelmingly positive experience for me. Huge shout out to the other Jannies, mods, and 4chan staff for working hard to maintain the website throughout the years. It’s a loveless job, but someone has to do it. Just always remember.
we do it for FREE
VP9 and OPUS codecs in WEBM uploads Archived /j/
Are there any particular issues preventing a whitelist of the VP9 video codec and the OPUS audio codec for WEBM, alongside the existing VP8 and Vorbis?
It currently has support in all major operating systems and browsers:

Seems like a good way to bump the quality of webm uploads without increasing the filesize limit.

Regarding the GPT-4chan chatbot Archived /j/
Recently it has formally come out that a certain individual has created a spambot AI trained on 3 years worth of 4chan posts, and can create convincing shitposts that can de facto shut down all discussion on a board by drowning it in noise. This chatbot was directed primarily at /pol/ - a board which I personally janny - for the purpose of disrupting legal political discussion that the makers of the chatbot disagreed with. I do not want to get completely conspiratorial, but I've seen various other bits of evidence here and there (mostly social engineers bragging) that there is quite a bit of money put behind shutting down /pol/ through this and similar chatbots in order to accomplish goals such as ensuring certain people lose certain future elections. (this isn't to say /pol/ helped anyone win anything, what matters is certain groups think /pol/ matters and is thus worth spamming)

I can fully understand that /pol/ is not going to be the most popular board among non-/pol/ jannies. There are many reasons why you are perfectly within your rights to say "who cares what happens to /pol/?" But in my opinion this is the first salvo in a broader attack on 4chan, as the weapons used to disrupt /pol/ will be freely available and could easily be turned against other boards who may have similar grudges against them - such as /mlp/ or /lgbt/. Something needs to be done to counter these chatbots in general, as it seems that the individual behind this used a 4chan pass and the posts were mostly innocuous shitposting. The bots could easily be trained to not violate the rules (i.e. no 'saged' or profanities) and be further difficult to ban. According to the man himself, he was able to flood /pol/ to such a degree that 10% of all posts were the chatbot's. Simply imagine this happening on any other board and you understand my concern.

I do not think this should be ignored or dismissed AT ALL. It will be an invisible tumor going forward. This is 'Dead Internet Theory' realized.

Better mobile queue interface Archived /j/
This is a minor issue I've noticed with phone jannying but because the mobile report queue is based on the desktop version if you're left handed or happen to be using your non-dominant hand you're a lot more likely to accidentally delete posts, files or clear things because you have less space to safely scroll with.
If anyone feels like it a more mobile friendly design for the queue would be appreciated.
On a separate but related note on our regular website: the upper bottom link doesn't work, the bottom catalog link is unclickable and the bottom top and post a reply links overlap each other. It has been this way for a while and I don't have anything that could possibly be breaking the website such as extensions.

/vm/ generals Archived /j/
Henlo
On /vm/ there are ~20 'general' threads on the board right now, having either 'general' in the name, a /xyzg/ identifier, 'dummy text' edition, or links to prior threads.
The board rule three is:
>"Generals"—long-term, recurring threads about a specific game—should be posted in /vg/. This is not to say threads about specific games cannot be created on /vm/, just that long-term, recurring threads belong in /vg/.
However, reports on /vm/ are rare, and I've not seen any for a general where the report seems to be complaining that it exists, as much as one can interpret the reasoning behind a report. Additionally, as a janny and regular of /vg/ as well, I'm fairly certain the /vm/ generals would not survive on /vg/ due to post frequency issues (/vg/ is much faster, /vm/ generals would die without a lot of bump posting).
I don't really want to just delete/WR a bunch of threads despite them being clearly rulebreaking, since anons seem to enjoy being able to have a general for the more niche games and others don't seem to complain, at least via a method I can see.
Can this rule be discussed more? If generals were so prevalent or fast that they choked out non-general content I could see it being an issue, but as is that doesn't seem to be the case. I also see an argument in leaving the rule as is and not enforcing it unless a problem arises, but it is misleading that way. I should also mention I know this exists with at least a starcraft thread on /vst/, and some popular games have eternal general-esque threads on /vrpg/ but not to the same extent at all.
Just looking for any others' thoughts.

/co/ issues and silliness Archived /j/
I know I'm in good contact with you fellas, my /co/ janitor friends, but felt the need to put this here because this is a rather elusive issue.
There is an individual who will seize any opportunity to interject Nature Cat. Sometimes seamlessly and in an on-topic seeming manner, but mostly awkwardly and tenuously. That is the principle characterisation of this individual.
I can also (weakly) characterise this individual by the specific set of images they pick.
https://desuarchive.org/co/search/image/kxA8Z1NKQpU08XhuOw5YMg/
https://desuarchive.org/co/search/image/iJX2d5VVB38YFpMVyFbQRg/

https://desuarchive.org/co/search/image/kYK7oBnFknOBd8M3I4g-6A/
As it stands currently, this is a developing issue. This stuff isn't really being reported at the moment because I suppose it's quite recent or stealthy, so as a consequence I haven't been able frequently request bans on this individual in order to profile them as an 'evader' (and simply put note them in the evaders thread >>1697) or the like.
Regardless of that, wishing to speak as an anon and not just a janitor, I've been finding this behaviour mainly in threads I browse. Found it a little funny at first, but then it just became annoying. Do not wish for a death of a thousand cuts on an otherwise great board.

So be wary of naturecatfag. Thank you.

I'm going to follow up this up and address grammarfag eventually.

Feature Requests: Move Request Automation and Warn For Non-English Archived /j/
On two separate issues, I feel like bothering the moderation team on IRC/Discord is far more trouble than the problem itself; and as a result deletion of the post/thread is the easier answer. Obviously that is not acceptable, and as such I would very much suggest that both the Moving of Threads and the Warn for Non-English be less reliant on @ing Mods directly.

For Moving Threads, it should be a "send move request" type automation where either it gets placed in a global mod queue for thread moves, or an IRC based system where it automatically @'s Mods. Obviously this would also contain the information for a suggested board to move it to as well. So to give an example, there's a /bant/ tier religion debate thread on /pol/; I simply click a little "M" button on the post and that brings me to a popup menu that asks where I want the thread sent to. For some boards, this might be a small list (so you can't send ANY thread to ANY board, just some boards). For /pol/ that list might be restricted to "/bant/, /his/, /x/, or /trash/".

For Warn for Non-English, this is a bit of a /pol/ specific request. It is a semi-frequent occurrence on /pol/ that users of a thread need to be publicly warned by a Mod for lapsing into German or other such languages; and I take issue with that approach for two reasons. One, it feels like a Mod is coming down from on high to say "STOP HAVING FUN"; and two, it doesn't feel rules based. Oh such, it is against the board's rules to post in Non-English, but which rule? The answer is "none of the numbered ones", it is just an unlisted rule. And while that in itself might not need to change it to feel like just a regular moment of individuals being warned for breaking rules rather than an extraordinary event that the whole thread is going to reply to.

I don't think either of these will expand Janitorial powers in a negative way, as the first is just making it easier to get moderator attention, while the second is merely adding a new warn request.

/v/ thread Archived /j/
Can we have a /v/ thread going? Current state, spammers, console wars... and their solutions.

Please take note that I have not been a janitor of /v/ for long so take my words with a grain of salt.

During my shift, this is the current events on /v/:

- The Tomodachi life incident: those threads quickly derailed into SJW/gays hate threads and they never talk about the game itself. My opinion is they're not /v/ materials.

- The vidya draw threads are constantly fighting between the waifu/fur/serious vidya. Every time a draw thread is up, my report page is filled with reports of requests they don't like. They even split into 2 threads recently, which seems to be impractical to me. I have been leaving them to settle among themselves but things. just got worse.

- Off-topic: >What game where I can dual wield like a fookin legend: this is a thinly veiled Game of Thrones thread and they have been spammed constantly in the last few days. Please delete or BR them.

User self-post deletion should be disabled in /qa/, and after that somebody should check on the board from time to time and ban all the open proxies that are being used by bots to make upwards of 500 self-deleting posts per day.

There was a time when /qa/ was a deliberately ignored trash heap forgotten by everyone, and therefore it didn't actually matter that /qa/ had transformed into a bot-moderated chatroom for users banned one thousand times over, but now that there's a global announcement redirecting everyone to /qa/ to discuss 4chan it would be nice if the first thing they saw on arrival wasn't a bot-managed junkyard.

A guy started a thread on /lit/ earlier this morning saying that we could improve board quality by posting a collection of commonly used and/or popular charts within the sticky.
>>>/lit/18407396
He says that this would cut down on the amount of threads of people asking for beginner books or books on topics which have been discussed a thousand times before.
I agree with him, I think it's a good idea. At the moment, the board is overflowing with recc threads which more or less follow the same exact discussion every single day. Recc threads would probably still get posted if there were charts in the sticky, but at least not as many, and then there would be more of an excuse to prune the ones that do get posted. This would also slow down the board hopefully thereby improving quality.
Below I figured I'd post a handful of charts which I think would be most appropriate.

For instance on pol, the sticky says you cannot start a thread '"redpill me on x", with no additional information'
I can only delete those threads, but the OP might not know why his thread was deleted and will just post it again or keep doing it

I think if there was a WR for this, it would be good

They range from parodies to amateur films made by college students. I delete most of these threads but sometimes they look for feedback, which is okay i guess as it is film related but they have youtube for that.
So what do I delete all threads that contain links to youtube or just the ones made be amateur directors?

AutoJanny robot Archived /j/
Has there been any consideration given to adopting a machine learning model that can identify potential rule breaking content and auto report it? Obviously given the current state of ML it would be difficult for a model to correctly assess whether or not something is a rule breaking post, but there are definitely some rules a bot could easily understand, like posting NWS images.

Some of these models have been around for quite a while, and while I have no firsthand experience with them they claim to be pretty effective, like https://github.com/infinitered/nsfwjs which says it has a ~90% accuracy rate. There are quite a few models trained for this specific purpose, which are easily discovered by searching for them. I've even read articles about several social media companies that use "artificial intelligence" to identify things like child porn or gore and blocking them before they're even uploaded.

The only potential problem I could think of with this is that some boards would have too many false positives due to the topics (/fit/ would likely have more false positives than a board like /mu/ or /biz/), but it would probably be possible to tweak the confidence percentages for these boards. Even if this wouldn't work for all blue boards, it could still be very useful on others where there isn't much of a reason to post images of humans, let alone scantily clad ones.

Please let me know your thoughts in the comments below and don't forget to hit that subscribe button!

just what the title says
this is the notes file I've been using and updating for about a year
please note I started on /vg/ and added /d/ so some notes may be more relevant to certain boards than others

general:
tend towards the more specific rule and template when possible!
refresh the report page regularly, not just when you finish it or have looked at all the threads; no more than ~20 minutes between refreshes
"too early" for a general is before bump limit
BR's give an automatic 15-minute mute to the poster, but their milder cousins don't
remember there's a 4chan.org/bans page, it lists some recent bans and gives insight into what's ban-worthy

global 1:
most types are PERMANENT, generic type is 30 days
use the appropriate template!
drawn stuff does not get a BR for 1! every flavor of 1 is for photographs, just different variations
always tell someone about a 1 and try to consult beforehand
bestiality gets temp 1
if someone links an outside website that has normal pictures of underagers, don't use 1; probably do act though
if something has a bunch of erroneous reports for this, tell someone; if it's just one, deal with it normally

global 2:
30 days
be careful with this one

global 3:
1 day
the criteria for 3 are not the most obvious, tend towards 6
drawn kid stuff can be BR'd under 3
"reply to this or else" warrants a 3
if a bad post is BR'd and later found to be spam, it may go here
any sort of checking and rolling fit under 3b ("dubs/get")
dead bodies can go here if off-topic, if on-topic use 5 or better yet ask someone
caption, denial, and fiction threads on red boards go under 3a ("garbage outside of /b/"); entire full conversations that have taken root warrant a move to /trash/

global 4:
15 day external, 5 day internal
any personally identifiable information (e.g. phone number, e-mail address) for anyone that's not a public figure goes here, regardless of source or intent

There's been a huge uptick in dox posts on /pol/, mostly because of Twitter users like Skai Jackson doxing people they see as "problematic." This is causing a large amount of /pol/ threads and posts trying to counter-dox these Twitter users.

The big problem is that many of these dox posts/requests on /pol/ are going completely unnoticed. Tonight there was a thread full of dox posts but the only things reported were four Pepe images for some reason. Threads about doxing often reach 100+ posts.

Would it be a good idea to remind /pol/ in some way that posts containing addresses, discovered names, etc. are against the rules and should be reported? There are also users posting images and links to the Twitter doxing but not doing it themselves, which also violates the rule. I know something like this can cause a bit of a backlash, but I believe there will also be users spurned on that will report the posts.

Warn Template Suggestion for /e/ Archived /j/
For /e/, could there be a new WR-only template along the lines of:
>Please provide at least 6 example images when creating a theme/request thread
Perhaps mention to read the sticky if appropriate.

Even though this is not listed as an explicit rule on the rules page, it is listed as a definite requirement in the board sticky, and is consistently enforced as a rule by both me and others who check the board.
While I can warn for it being a request thread, it isn't as if threads are being removed solely for requesting something, but also for the OP failing to provide sufficient content to start a thread. So I feel that is a misleading warn.
Also, while others and myself will inform the OP to read the sticky, I feel the frequency of this specific case is enough to directly inform OP through a warn as well.

Does 2FA work? Archived /j/
I set up 2FA when I created my account and confirmed it worked at that time. Today was the first time since creating my account that I had to restart my PC, about 3 weeks I think.
I went to the reports page and had to enter my username and pass once, then again to use the BR button. I had to enter u:p again going to the login page but I've not had to enter my 2FA creds at all.

Maybe my browser is storing it the session, I dunno.

The case of Barneyfag Archived /j/
Has the option of altering MD5 data when an image is uploaded ever been considered in regards to Barneyfag? That way, he won't be able to be alerted whenever an image in his database or whatever he uses is uploaded. He's not using recognition software; earlier today, there was an image that had around nine pixels in total that he recognized as belonging to a Derpibooru image, impossible to reverse search accurately.

This has been going on for over half a decade now as an endless war of attrition. It's been getting worse the past month too.

Fixing the Pokemon Anime Discussion Thread Archived /j/
Alright, so the Pokemon Anime Discussion Thread on /vp/ has become a serious issue, and it is the main source of clogs in the reports queue. Posters in the thread frequently falsely report and flame each other, resulting in off topic discussion they rarely discuss the Pokemon anime at all.
I'm starting this thread because I'd like to discuss how to resolve issues with /padt/ so that it isn't so much of a toxic cesspool where users feel a need to abuse the reports system and to shit on each other, and I'd also like to catalog prevalent issues in detail. Additionally, I'd like to create a healthier environment where posters actually discuss the Pokemon anime itself instead of going off topic frequently. I do know that some options are to use /vp/ 1 and /vp/ 4 when requesting or placing bans, but I'm not sure if it's enough. Does /padt/ simply need stricter moderation and ban the more notorious posters that instigate shit continually, or are more drastic measures needed?
Some of the more prevalent issues I've noticed are:
1) Waifu and shipping shitposting, where users shit on each other for having a preferred waifu or ship, and other users instigate these arguments to happen.
2) Boogeymanposting, where users accuse each other of being some person like Scott, Duplica, Famon, etc.
Both lead to constant flaming and false reporting.
So what should be done? I believe if we're able to fix common issues in /padt/, we'll see less abuse of the report function by posters, and it won't clog the reports queue as much anymore.

Basic IRC Guide for Complete Noobs Archived /j/
So you've never used IRC before, and now you need to learn. This guide will walk you through the process of installing and configuring the necessary software to get you into #janiteam.

First, download and install OpenSSL:
http://slproweb.com/products/Win32OpenSSL.html

You need this piece of software as #janiteam requires that you be connected to the Rizon network using a secure connection. If you aren't, then you can't join.

Next, install HexChat.
http://hexchat.org/downloads.html

Just use the default options to install, and run HexChat when finished.

Improvements for moderating Archived /j/
How easy is it to make it so that when you go to a thread, all the posts that were reported in the ban queue would show up as grey. This will make tracking replies and understanding the content much easier for everyone.

Also for the report page, is it possible to lump all the reports from 1 thread together. Or just add a sorting criteria (most reports, same thread, etc etc)

Thread 5514 Archived /j/
I wrote a userscript which adds the janitor tools to 4chan x and I thought I would share it here as it seems some others may find it useful as well.

The script does the following:
- Adds the deletion and ban request icon buttons to the end of all posts, including those that are auto-updated.
- Automatically sets the cookie which 4chan x uses to determine whether or not it shows captchas to you, so you can use captchaless posting.
- Adds a link to /j/ to the end of the custom board list, and will indicate when there are new posts in a similar manner to the native extension.

If you want to post without the cooldown, there is an option in the 4chan x settings to disable this, just open the settings panel and Ctrl+F "cooldown".

The script works in pretty much the same way as the native one does, just changed to accomodate for 4chan x specific elements.

I've been using it myself for the past few days and it seems to be working fine but let me know if you find any something odd occurs, or if you have any feedback.

I have only tested it with ccd0's v3 fork, but I believe it should also work with loadletter's v2 fork.

i mean the title sounds really shameful and just opens them up to abuse from the userbase, wouldn't calling them regulators or supervisors or something have been better?
