/fat/ - Fat Loss General
>Who is /fat/ for?
For eaters turned exercisers working towards a longer life and a better physique through meaningful hard-work, strategy, and dedication. This is not QTDDTOT, stick to questions on fat loss. Post height and weight when asking for advice.
Join our Fatty Contest: https://www.fattycontest.com/

>What do I do first?
1. Read https://physiqonomics.com/fat-loss/
2. Calculate your Body Fat Percentage: https://fitness.bizcalcs.com/Calculator.asp?Calc=Body-Fat-Navy
3. Calculate your TDEE: https://www.sailrabbit.com/bmr/
Remember to use bodyfat% and use Katch-McArdle Formula with sedentary settings or your TDEE will be too high.
4. Plan your weight loss: https://www.losertown.org/eats/cal.php
5. Track your nutrition with MyFitnessPal (better for packaged food), Cronometer (better for generic food/macros), LoseIt (great for both), or Waistline (FOSS).

>Now what?
Count calories, all of them.
Eat about 500-1000 less calories than your TDEE.
Buy scales, be accurate.
Learn to cook. Try to stick to lean protein and green vegetables.
Eat a lot of protein. 0.72g per pound of goal lean body mass.
Doing cardio, even just walking, will improve your health. There is no such thing as a healthy fat heart, but you can offset the risks.
Lifting weights will keep and gain muscle mass and lose fat much quicker. Not lifting results in the body eating away muscle AND fat.
Drink more water.
Read the /fit/ sticky: https://liamrosen.com/fitness.html

>DON'T
Eat refined sugars, they're terrible for you regardless of calories.
Eat processed foods.
Drink your calories (alcohol, soda, Starbucks).
Freak out over a weight loss stall. Plateaus can last up to three weeks.
"Reward" yourself. Cheat days cheat only yourself.

Works fine and after you reach your goal weight you can eat ad libitum keto for long term maintenance.

A potential problem is that if you're consciously restricting you will be hungry. If you exceed your calorie goal due to hunger it might make you feel like you failed. And if you fail in one regard (calorie goal) it may psychologically feel like failing in the most important way (avoiding carbs) is not much worse.

Just make sure you prioritize carb avoidance.

If you're dehydrated, that can cause cramps. You normally get a decent amount of water from eating food, so if you didn't drink a bit more than normal you might be a bit dehydrated.
For electrolytes, the two main ones are sodium and potassium. Magnesium and calcium too wouldn't hurt. For shorter fasts, just normal table salt or sea salt is enough. Just add it to water. 1 teaspoon over the whole day is enough.
You can buy a premade one for fasting, they're just bit overpriced though. Just make sure it doesn't have sugar.

Hamplanet here to motivate you all.
Sizes are off all charts - 200cm height, started all kinds of diets etc. at 165kgs. BMI is dumb in my case I bet I hit like 38-42. Still taller than fat, huge beer gut, 34 years old, Germany (because of course), 4chan since I was 16, vidya since I was 4 (doctor recommended it because of my eyesight???), poor family so all hobbies online because free (anime, gaymen, programming)
I was coping most of my life away stubbornly thinking somethings not right with "muh genes", was a fatty throughout school. Once I moved out, immediately cut out Sodas (too lazy to carry them, no car lmao), while still in uni started gym on "dunno what I'm doing" and went with a girl who also didn't. Martial Arts bro gave me a pirated paid plan, triple split WITH diet - ignored that part, went to sports to drink more, lost 30kgs in 4 years. Got fired, changed jobs, now had a 12 hr work day plus commute - couldn't gym, too tired. Tried keto - worked, immediately bounced back. Quit that job eventually due to jeets. One year jobless, headhunter didn't manage to find me something, state gibs running out, close to be put into state labour program which gives you to IKEA even if you have a goddamn degree.

I think you are misinterpreting things as much worse than they actually are. It's only happened twice, once after waking up the day after my first ever 24hr fast and then once about 30 minutes after breaking a fast with a chocolate nutritious shake, ended up having to pull over to puke in my car on my way to college, the puke tasted/looked identical to how it was when I drank it.
I just assumed everyone else had a few puking moments when they fasted.

cont.
2020 coof hits, finally quit gym membership, online 24/7, somehow land a new job by writing in myself. 20 mins to work on bicycle, don't have one at that point.
Dad dies 2022 from cancer (54), have to take care of that, at least saw him one last time but didn't spend the time I should with him due to coof. Depression again or whatever, more drinking. Home office. Go outside twice a week.
Fuck it, we're doing this slow. Get a bike that year. Bike to work for a year. Finally cave in and order a shitload of Whey. Finally money, get shaker and some sports bands.
4 weeks ago, hit the gym again. Feel like a retard, WAY less weight than back in my days 6 years ago, but already have the pirated plan.
Stick to muscle gain - I am huge, once those muscles get reactivated I know they burn ungodly amounts of energy. Actually follow diet plan as well, sober for 24 weeks now.
I ease myself in. The plan is for 12 weeks fast results so intended to go 6 times a week - I go with 2 for the first three, finally went up to 3/6 this week, even after biking to/from work. Leg day was fun, I easily do 160kgs on the leg press. Being fat is like wearing a fat suit to sports 24/7. Muscles sore as fuck, but that's success. Laser focussed on plan, gym locals already recognize me and of course they're friendly to the motivated fatty.

6/7 is utopian for long-term ("until I am a greek god for fucks sake"), Kilogram number doesn't matter, if I still feel my beer gut I need to go train.
Current body type is T-Rex. I bench press like 55kgs, meanwhile leg stuff I go over the limits on most machines.
God bless the leg press with free weights. God bless the snap city videos making me always keep my legs over ~20° instead of full spread.
For any fatties starting out:
Technique over weight! Do any freeweight 13-15 with some band or towel first, feel out what you can and can't do, get a training with a rep count and adjust weight accordingly.
Stop giving a fuck about others in the gym, blast loud music if you must. Let nobody interfere - NO, you do NOT need a spotter, most of those asking are bad anyways and you are NOT lifting deadly weights, don't fool yourself.

But, some niggas just get unlucky with it.
Generally if you're a young guy and you're losing less than 50-75 pounds, it's not something you really need to worry about.
If you're losing like 100, then yeah, be mindful of it, but you might be fine regardless.

Doesn't really matter how fat they are in terms of lbs because what matters more is how much of that fat is subcutaneous. Visceral fat doesn't usually make it sag or droop. So you can be 100lbs overweight but if its mostly visceral fat you can come out without much if any loose skin.

You can tell from the start if you're going to end up with loose skin or not. If your skin is still tight you probably won't have much loose skin by the end. If you already have sagging skin that hangs down with rolls of fat; you're going to have loose skin by the end too, and you will need surgery if you want it to go away. All the stuff about collagen, creams, needling, radio frequency, fasting, autophagy, keto, ect it's all memes and cope that range from limited to no efficacy and won't solve the issue, they're just a waste of time and money, the only real solution to loose skin is getting it cut off.

You have some mix of both, if you have a hard time visualizing the difference but consider this picture.

These men carry a similar amount of fat, ~40% BF, but the man on the left has more visceral fat while the man on the right has more subcutaneous fat. See how the man on the left's fat is still held tight to his body? While the man on the right's fat sags and folds. The man on the left can lose the weight and have little to no loose skin, the man on the right will have loose skin after losing weight no matter what he does or how he loses the weight.

This could just as well be explained by genetic fat distribution, aka you're making shit up, even though its technically correct that if you have alot of visc fat your skin is likely not stretched as much, but its not true that guy on the left has more visc fat, you dont know that
He has different distribution and is like 10% less bodyfat than left

And when I set a bag of chips, I did not mean a family size 1000 calorie bag of chips, and by inferring that, it just shows you are still in effect person mindset and have not yet transitioned into normal eating habits. If you were in a normal conversation with two normal non-obese people, and they said, I'm going to have a sandwich in a bag of chips, they would not assume that you are going to eat a sandwich, and then a bag of chips with double the calories of the sandwich. As I established before, your perspective on reality is warped. I'm finished with this conversation because we clearly are not going to see eye to eye.

>Overabundance of processed food and lack of physically demanding jobs and outdoor play.
That's broadly been the reality since at least the early 1900s thanks to the spread of the industrial revolution yet the dramatic uptick in obesity rates lagged another half century.

To put this into perspective sitting on their ass, listening to the radio/watching TV, working a desk job instead of in a field, and eating processed slop you still eat today (Coke is from 1886, Oreos from 1912, Twinkies from 1930s) didn't make your grandparents or your great grandparents into fatties, it only started around when your mom and dad's generation (who likely grew up skinny) were reaching adulthood. The millennials were the first with widespread childhood obesity and its only gotten worse from there. Something changed in the last ~50 years that made everyone into fatties.

Its really not, your great grandparents oreos had the same caloric value they have today, the ingredients have changed slightly but the total caloric value is roughly the same and you're actually paying more for them today (adjusted for inflation) than you were back then. Sitting in a chair in a factory is not burning significantly more calories than sitting in a chair at home. They had the slop, they had the sedentary lifestyle, it was just as cheap and abundant, yet they didn't get fat and their kids didn't get fat either, it was those kids kids that got fat.

It doesn't matter if people are "sitting at home all day" or not. The brain uses more energy than any other organ. Additive DEE is a myth.

Primitive tribal people who walk all day have the same energy expenditure as modern industrialized populations.

What happened is that people were taught by the sugar industry that calories cause obesity (See: >>76560478 >>76560532 >>76560556 >>76560568 >>76560627) and as a result they started eating more carbs (See: >>76560205)

I have no idea, and no one else seems to know either. The obesity epidemic just pops up in the mid/late 1970s, and just kept gaining momentum through the 1980s, 1990s, 2000s, 2010s, and 2020s with seemingly no loss in momentum, yet all the causes people usually point to have been with us since the 1890s~1910s. People went from hard active labor to assembly line work and deskjobs more than a century ago and for a half century of it they didn't get fat at the rates we see today.

>>76560627
Explain the 20 year lag between your 1950s domino ad and obesity epidemic? People didn't suddenly think "sugar good" either after a few ads in TIME, "low sugar" and "sugar free", and "no added sugar" foods have been popular throughout the entire obesity epidemic yet it didn't cause any loss of momentum.

>How many calories does 10k steps actually burn?
That's going to vary wildly from person to person.
We can track how many calories you burn by tracking how much CO2 you exhale and that varies based on your heart rate and respiration rate. A physically healthy person walking 10k steps might not even raise their heartrate past 80bpm, while a massive class III obeast fatty might be at 150bpm by the end of their 10k steps, the fatty will be burning far more calories than the healthy person. So it could be anywhere from like 100 calories to 1000 calories, if you're a fatty walking 10k steps is probably something like ~400 calories, as your fitness level improves that number will go down, when you're healthy it'll probably be in the ~200 calorie range.

>You burn 300 calories doing nothing?
You got out of bed? You dressed yourself? You presumably walked to your computer? You made yourself some slop and threw out the trash? You scratched that itch on your ass? That's where those 300 calories came from, even if you're sedentary and not leaving your house you're still moving around a little. If you lay in bed the entire day completely immobile that's your BMR.

The body lowers metabolism when you eat carbs and restrict calories specifically so it can store fat.

Insulin signals for fat tissue to grow. If you are eating carbs your body will find a way to make fat tissue grow.

Eating carbs while restricting calories also causes less muscle mass and more body fat at any weight. Reduced muscle mass is another way the body can preserve fat in addition to lowering metabolism.
