Has anyone used one of these IBM keyboards before? Not explicitly the moonrune variant, just in general.

I got one and the left trackpoint button doesn't register that well. It "works", but only if I press it right in the middle or press it down with a bit of force. It's a bit annoying to do while navigating. Has anyone else had this same issue? I ask so that I can return it.

I'm referring to the area I have circled with arrows pointing to it for your convenience.

Besides, ThinkPad keyboards, which these are based off, are a pain in the ass to repair aside from just straight-up replacing them. Someone's always fucking it up and asking "can I fix this" on /tpg/.

if you have the disposable income for it, i say go for it. i love mine, the keycaps feel really good.
but that being said...if you have issues that should be covered under warranty, ellipse can be a bit of a tightass like that. I had a keycap get damaged by the courier, took photos and he offered to give me free shipping and replacement "on my next parts order" lol. The only reason i agreed was because i was already planning on buying some different keys already, otherwise I would've put my foot down and made him ship me a free replacement.
The bog standard space bar worked perfectly fine, but the shorter 6U bar I had to tweak the stabiliser bar with pliers before it stopped getting stuck when it bottomed out. If you do have to take it apart for servicing or modifications you do need pliers and four C clamps. I adjusted some keys' springs after a few hours of use, because they didn't feel right to me, but after that it's been great.
I honestly think that if he really does stop making these for real, it should go to Unicomp or something. Dunno which chink factories he's been dealing with but maybe he can get blueprints or some shit to them, i dunno. But I wouldn't be surprised if he went full classic car boomer and asked for some insanely unrealistic amount for the blueprints/rights etc. even if he was about to croak.

https://keychronsupport.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/33474131840663-Fixing-Keyboard-Keys-That-Require-Extra-Force-or-Multiple-Presses
>If some keys on your Q Max or V Max keyboard require multiple presses or extra force to work, it is likely due to the plate being slightly bent or deformed over time, preventing the switch pins from making full contact with the PCB when pressed.
Method 1: Pressing the Keyboard Surface
Power Off or Unplug the Keyboard: Before you begin, make sure your keyboard is either powered off or disconnected from the device.
Position Your Palms on the Keyboard: Place both palms flat on the keyboard, covering as much of the surface as possible.
Apply Firm Pressure: Press down firmly on the keyboard. Focus particularly on the area around the problematic keys, but avoid using excessive force that could damage the switches.
Repeat the Process: Lift your hands and repeat the pressing motion 3–5 times.
Test the Keys: Power the device back on and test the keys. In most cases, the keys should now respond normally.
Method 2: Straightening the Plate Manually
If the first method does not resolve the issue, you may need to manually straighten the plate.
Disassemble the Keyboard: You can find the disassemble guide here.
Straighten the Plate: Gently but firmly, use your fingers or a small flat tool to straighten the plate. Be careful not to apply too much force, as this can damage it. Focus on the area around the problematic keys.
Reassemble the Keyboard: Carefully put the keyboard back together, ensuring all components are properly aligned and secured.
Test the Keys: Power the device back on and test the keys again. The keys should now function normally.
Even the gutter oil brain damaged yellow peril chinks at Keychron have admitted that their design is so comically retarded that the plate acts as a prybar, tearing the switches off. The hotswap meme further exacerbates the problem.

Ah well fuck me, I think I've made a mistake in buying the moonrune variant of this keyboard. The functions enabled by the function key don't work aside from the Fn+F4 sleep function; adjusting brightness through the function keys doesn't work, and the symbols enabled by the shift modifier are shifted over one key compared to the legends that are written on the keys themselves. That is an issue with the keyboard layout (I assume), and at least fixable with some configuration on GNU+Linux, but I still have to go through the trouble of configuring it.

Some other issues irrespective of the keyboard layout/registering of keys, is the fact that the backspace and spacebar are chode-sized, and that there are all these weird keys with Chinese legends. The keyboard types like shit too, it feels all mushy. I thought it'd me similar to one of the older model thinkpads. Even the chiclet-style xx30 keyboards feel better than this. This shit's too thin too. At least it stays in place when I'm typing. Still feels like using it will give me arthritis.

There's also the fact that one of the nav buttons doesn't fucking work (well). The entire point of me buying this keyboard was because I wanted to navigate with the nipple while in bed, and didn't want to pay all that much for a Tex Shinobi. I thought this would have sufficed.

Maybe other, older IBM thinkpad-style keyboards are different. Maybe I just got unlucky with Chang's shitty CQ--Chinamen still make these. Maybe this keyboard is just shit.

Fuck me, I knew I should've just gone with the Franch layout one; I don't even know Korean.

Like I said previously, I should've just gone with an older model keyboard of the same style--the one with the trackpad. There's a risk of the two having the exact same problems, but I remember seeing some anon comment on how inferior this model was compared to its predecessor.

Maybe the newer wireless one made by Lenovo would've been better.

Really, instead of operating with assumptions, I should've just built my own nipple-nav keyboard from scratch.

>notice any trackpoint drift or issues with scrolling using middle click + the trackpoint?
No, that's an issue that only exists after heavy use of the nipple; the one I got is new.

I find that the backspace button is not all that accurate/responsive for some reason, probably 'cause it's chode-sized and in the top-right-hand corner away from the home row, so it's easy to fuck up pressing it.
>ive heard their shura model has these problems
The keyboard I've been referring to is not the Tex Shinobi, it's the IBM thinkpad style keyboard it's based off of. These are shitty scissor switches, and they sound like shit when typing; sounds like I'm typing on broken glass.

Now that I think about it, my issues with keys registering might be an issue with rollover.
>my t420 thinkpad has a perfect trackpoint and id like the same experience for my desktop
The only keyboard that comes to mind is the Tex Shinobi. Unicomp has a Model M variant with a nipple, but they went about it in such a retarded faggot way; there's no middle scroll button. There are really no other alternatives, which is retarded since keeping your hands on the home row while navigating is pretty efficient, and the keyboard can be used while laying in bed. Really, this should've been a standard implementation, but that would make too much sense.

Just build your own.

You're getting analog inputs in only four directions (with shitty diagonals that are easily interrupted) and with very short throws, compared to sticks or wheels that have way more directions, and the distance that sticks or even wheels can move is far greater than any MX switch on the market, allowing for much finer precision.
It's just a fucking awful platform for analog input inherently. You could maybe make it less shit by having heavier springs and training yourself over a long period of time, but why bother when it's still just not going to be as good as a controller?

Learn to use your editor without the mouse. That means learning modal vim-like editing, and finding plugins that help you jump to any visible word on screen, like avy-jump in emacs. For browser, install qutebrowser or use vimium for firefox. Also, use a window manager, e.g. i3. Set up a bunch of workspaces and jump between them.
The only use-case for the mouse remains games (obviously), some browser shenanegans (some scrolling some stupid element), and certain GUI applications if you use anything other than a browser and an editor at all.
Most importantly, switch away from qwerty asap, that helped me. This should be your foremost goal.

I like low profile also, especially the keyboard on my old dell e6410. I am just so fast with it. But I also like my newly-assembled split board because my thumbs fatigue on the laptop keyboard (am a heavy user of left and right alt).
I have recently started using a tbk mini (a 3x6+3 small dactyl), and while there's some discomfort, I suppose it's just a starting period, and the "flow" isn't so great yet, I will just stick to it and these problems will go away I think. At least I am 90% at the old speed, after only one week, which is apparently a fast adaptation.
That said, while I dig the keywell, I can't help but look at corne-ish zen with its choc switches and just wonder at its magnificence. Can't help but think of trying Gateron Low Profiles at some point with an even smaller dactyl, such as Tightyl.

So is there no way to get them to register on Linux? I've only tested key inputs in xev on Linux, I didn't bother testing each key, function key, and modifier on Windows; it worked fine typing. I just want full functionality of my keyboard--no matter how shit it is.

I read a comment--don't remember where--that mentioned that these keyboards feel like shit initially, and have to be broken in; they have to be "buck-broken" so to speak. 8835 and 8845 I bought used so idk about breaking them in.
The housing is easy to take apart. 8855 is literally just a custom housing and usb adapter board for a regular laptop keyboard (top of the pic), 8845 has usb controller integrated with the keyboard pcb. Key caps and scissors plastic breaks very easily.
With 8855 most (maybe all) function codes are regular keycodes. Good luck finding a used 8855 for less than a brand new Shinobi.
I am not aware of any way to make special function combos like brightness on 8835/8845 register in any OS, they worked when plugged into IBM T42 laptop so I know the keys work. Same function combos when pressed on T42 internal keyboard also did not show any keycode in xev.

The problem is anon is that there are posters here who grit their teeth if people type with hotswaps. The same kind of people who complain about keyboard noise are the same ones going to autistic lengths to sound proof their keyboard with zero usecase. So this whole "it adds nothing" argument falls flat to me. People get keyboards to improve their typing experience and part of that is sound. A typist on a membrane will be on par with a mechanical 90% of the time but people get mechanical because they want to make typing more pleasurable. You don't NEED tactile or clickly but to some people it makes typing more pleasant. People who go for clickies typically cope with linears, but people who go out of their way for *quiet* linears can't do the inverse. There is an inflexibility there.

buy a syringe with a small nib. fill said syringe with your lube of choice. g205 works if youre clueless

take some tweezers or your fingers and pull on on the stabilizer stem. find the wire, and use the syringe to put lubricant underneath the wire, up until where it bends on both sides. then, find where the wire sits inside of the stabilizer stem, and put a very small bit of lube in. these two things should help with ticking or shitty noises coming from bottom out

use the syringe to put a small (salt grain sized) dot of lube on all 4 sides of the stabilizer stem. wipe extra lube off of the stem with a cotton swab. put the bar back on and gently spam both sides for like 15-30 seconds each to spread the lube around the stem. this should help with stab scratch

depending on how dogshit your board is this will either help or entirely fix awful stab feel/sound without having to break the thing open

Chances are the thing that will go best with your other gear on your desk is black. It's usually a safe way to go.

So that means getting some good WoB (or otherwise black) keycaps. Your options here are:
- GMK WoB at Drop
- GMK Shaded (gray-on-black) at Cannonkeys
- GMK Shanshui (chinese WoB) at Cannonkeys
- GMK Black Snail (beige-on-black) at Novelkeys or Geonworks
- GMK Olivia No3 (pink-on-black) at DeskHero

- Keyreative KAP WoB at Cannonkeys
- Keyreative KAM Playground at Novelkeys
- Keykobo WoB at Keykobo
- Signature Plastics DCS Intro WoB at Bowlkeyboards
- Swagkeys WoB (cheaper, but they also sound and feel cheaper) at Bowlkeyboards or Clickclack
- Mode Obscura at Mode
- Drop MT3 WoB at Drop
- PBS Black-on-black at Cannonkeys (if you are anything less than a seasoned touch typist I would avoid)

I might be forgetting some stuff, I don't know.

As for the board itself: if the keycaps are black you can get away with doing almost anything else, but there's nothing wrong with black caps on a black board. Silver generally looks good too. Look at your desk and think about what would either fit in with what's already there or accent it. Avoid clashing by putting e.g. navy next a royal blue mousepad, etc.

For me, it would be a silver Neo75cu with DCS Intro WoB.
