Yes, but getting hired past 50 gets increasingly difficult no matter how well you've kept up with the times. Ageism is real, and all the bean counters just kind of assume that you're a slow, hard-headed pile of deadwood that also costs a ton to hire because of all the now "outdated" experience.
Depending on company culture, it can take anything from a strong endorsement from a team lead to outright miracles to get hired past 50 and people in productive (non-managerial) roles in their late 50s to early 60s are usually the first target when a company wants to reduce their personnel costs. Being the maintainer for some key legacy system is probably the best shelter you can have at that point.
If you want to stay gainfully employed into an advanced age, you probably want to get on a managerial track at some point.

My managers half assed implementing a solution which affects thousands of users and costs the company hundreds of thousands of dollars, and now that shit is constantly breaking to the point of insanity, I'm expected to be on call all the fucking time and fix something nobody knows how it works, without training, a clear incident response plan or anything. Should I look for a new job? It certainly feels like it. Oh and they would "love to hear our ideas on how we would organize a paid on call because the system is now so critical we need it monitored 24/7". Like bitch I'm not going to tell you how to sign my life away, that's your job.

IT aint that bad for old guys. A lot of them have relevant experience even with today's bullshit. The real kicker though is they stagnate and rather stay at a certain level of responsibility. You rarely find above 50yr managers. They prefer to give that up to younger guys with more willingness to accept mistakes. Older guys just want to act as a subject matter expert, train the new guys and grill.

Tons of people quit/moved before I arrived at my team 3 years ago. From the original lineup of 6 engineers in 2020, only 1 remained by 2022. Since then, me and him are the only ones who persisted through more hirings and firings. Our direct manger changed 3 times until my OG teammate was promoted to a team lead so he manages me now. I'm still a regular engineer but in practice I am sort of an incompetent tech lead as well.
So yeah, powering through this shit can be worth it, especially in this dead market. Pic related is me from 3 years ago, how time flies.

Cubicles look like shit to normies / people who have never worked in an open office for more than a week. Movies like Office Space / Fight Club did massive harm towards perception of cubicles as they portrayed them as a means of depersonalization and corporate anonymizing. If you ignore how comfy a cubicle is, that bleak maze looks depressing as fuck. It's no wonder it was an easy shift for management to implement exciting! new! open office plans! They're LITERALLY breaking down walls, leading to easier collaboration and! transparent coworking! You can literally SEE what your coworkers are working on!

in addition to the various feefees of office culture and not having a real office, cubicle walls never look/feel good (its just one big lint collector) and disrupt airflow so cubicles are always stinky and hot and 99% of cubicle walls are super flimsy so they always are leaned over a little bit or are dented all over or got holes in em or dont lock together properly anymore
also cable management is a nightmare. not in your cube, just get a dock lol. but modern cubicles run power/ethernet through them so you have giant retarded looking stanchions going into the ceiling everywhere and it just looks like ass (and cubicle divider/furniture providers apparently dont have limbs so the power outlets and ethernet ports are always in stupid places)

Why would management waste money, space, and time on proper walls when flimsy walls would suffice?
Why would management waste money and space on flimsy walls when bench desks and open floor plans will suffice? Now you can cram even more people into a small area, and it's easier than ever to make sure people aren't slacking off.
This is what we had before cubicles.
Notice that office work is for women because men are expected to be outside and work a real job.

Pretty high on the west coast. I live in Seattle, my "starter home" in the north end of the city was $615k when I bought it in 2018-- now it's worth about $750k due to market increases. The same house in a very desirable location would be about $950k. A larger home suitable for a small family (2 adults 2 children) would be $1,000,000 and about $1,500,000-$2,100,000 in a more desirable neighborhood.
San Francisco is even more insane. Last I really looked into it, home ownership costs were 1.5-2.0x higher.

Do tell ITlet are you on commercial internet? Alot of this sounds like they do not fund your section at all. If you have the equipment in the same room as them then you are forced to dump the AC to the lowest setting. If the equipment is off the shelf instead of from a big manufacturer then you are really hampering the needs of your customer.
Its what i imagine working IT for LTT is but they add even more work since that is a additional(no extra pay) job that some fat ass has to do at the company.

Any tips on managing this on the transition to a new job though? I just shut down and anytime she asks something stupid I don't even turn on my mic and just let the group meeting talk waiting for my response. I'm trying to remain coolio but honestly the way she does things... it's actually ticking me off even if it's not directly towards me.

what jobs to avoid this mess bro. ;_;
Interviewing and I'm seriously wondering what's the best number to ask for during an interview. I feel like my salary right now is a little bloated for my role. (like written responsibilities for similar jobs are definitely making 10-20k less, but my actual responsibilities are wayyyy higher than what I'm making but I'm in the weird middle role where I don't have the experience and knowledge to actually get those type of jobs). I could ask for something matching my current job or I could ask for 10-20k less or I could be ambitious and ask for maybe 5k more. I don't know the best approach. I know it's more on the role but I'm a little desperate to leave and I'm starting to think a 5-10k shave off isn't too bad if I can get outta here...

My first job had a very basic kitchen (microwave, fridge) and provided free milk. Every day, for 6 years, I took two 8oz milk cartons and used them to make a protein shake for my lunch. Two scoops of optimum nutrition chocolate protein, two cartons of milk.
I was in the office 4 days a week, 175 days a year after PTO. Two cartons a day, 350 cartons per year. I worked that job for 5.5 years, so 1,925 little cartons of milk. For free. About 120 gallons, or 1,030 pounds of milk. 15,400 grams of free protein courtesy of my work. Saved so much money over my fat fuck coworkers who constantly dropped $20-25 a day on the food trucks.

- c/cpp ??. they're completely different
replace two of the projects with something you can talk about in depth. you can do something that looks impressive in a weekend with some help. Also, keep in mind the target audience. with rare exception unironically yes. you may be aware of the company Sysco -- they provide food to even high end restaurants across the US and Canada. their catalogue isn't 100% slop but it's pretty close. and besides, proper restaurants are pretty rare. there's a very wide gap between shoveled slop and proper food, and with only an hour and there not being any fucking buildings within 200ft of eachother on this godforsaken continent, proper food may take too long to prepare and eat anyway. hence
>>106229716 question of "how do i eat when there's no restaurants close enough and i am too lazy/fat to bring leftovers"

>doable in a week but would it really help
yeah, it really would. After fixing your bullet points + adding a decent project, consider one-lining the project headers, and removing a bullet point from each.
more:
- chronological order and/or GitHub links for all of the projects.
- asking
to rewrite your bullet points in XYZ format would be an instant improvement, please fix them. Even if you don't have specific metrics for something you did, you can indicate why it's important + what it accomplished.
- remove "target operating system", the colon is also misformated
- remove certificates section?
- if you want to larp "knowing AWS", add specific things like dynamodb, s3, etc.
- i don't know what location you're applying in, but the whole resume is really bad for any big american city. If you look at any swe resume review community you'll see the same advice I'm writing. It looks low effort

I told him "No. I'm just waiting for you guys to fire me and set me free then I'll take a year long vacation haha". I was met with the longest most uncomfortable pause ever and then he looked to my new coworker and said he shouldn't be afraid to just take multiple days off whenever he felt like it. You are a liability if given admin creds. One retard tried to have me promote their account to a domain administrator so that "he could map shares" faster even though we have a company wide user for that that's tailor made for mapping shares and accessing the repo.
There is nothing worsen than developers thinking they're system administrators because they built a computer at their home. I stay in my lane, you stay in yours and we'll have a good thing going on.

> developers push something retarded to prod

>look into event viewer

These idiots routinely ignore basics of networking and domain relations, they keep hard coding IPs like apes and then cry that nothing works because our development talent pool is comprised of people who genuinely can't do anything other than code.
>DBA team optimizes queries to ease the CPU load
>all our nodes start going down one after another OOMing like crazy
>DBA team cries about hardware constraints
>nodes still have a 40GB mem overhead during the incident
It takes exactly 3 hours of convincing each of these apes to roll back the absolutely disgusting changes they've made, at which point prod works normally again. I have no idea what the fuck they're doing but it's nothing good.
Also
> no budget for a sandbox machine
> updates go directly to prod
> have to stay up late into AMs durinf update weeks
It's an absolute shit show, no one respects us but will happily use our powershell prefabs and tack on work onto our backs, when things go sour we're always at fault and when things are running fine we're lazy bums with nothing to do.
Fuck you Jason you sleazy cunt.
