FAQ: >How do I activate Windows?
github.com/massgravel/Microsoft-Activation-Scripts
HWID2 generates and registers a permanent legitimate license on MS's activation servers
Usage: paste into Powershell, run.
irm https://get.activated.win | iex >and Office?
Same method, use Ohook
You can also use Office.com if your needs are very minimal
or try OnlyOffice/LibreOffice and set it to save in MSOffice file formats

A client wants to upgrade his boot drive from 2TB to 4TB. The kicker? He's on Windows 7, on a Dell XPS Studio, and from what I can tell, it can't support UEFI. And I'm getting mixed signals, but it's looking like Windows 7 doesn't natively support booting to GPT either. What are my options?

Since I'm here can I somehow still get the security updates for win 10 (enterprise) after October without making a Microsoft account? Note that I'm a gaymer and kind of too lazy to format and install LTSC.

I'd love to, but he's obsessed with this lasting as long as possible. Not to mention he has several drives, each AT LEAST 2TB, most of them almost full. Of who knows what. I think it's mostly music.
How do I figure out which program out of the hundreds of processes currently running is the one that causes my computer to freeze up every few hours? >Speccy

Both give zero clues as to what's causing it. The closest thing I can think of is HuionTablet, but the freezing still happens when that's been uninstalled
I also have jwpen since I'm using a shitty Monoprice tablet

Use MAS as the other Anon said
In any case the ESU MS officially gives out for free is only for 1 year
If you activate ESU with TSforge with MAS you get 3 years
Planning on doing a dual boot of 7 and 10 LTSC on one of my PCs. >>106276157 >>106276599
Arigato, I'll look into that when my dumbover passes. I have Win11 on my laptop and really would hate to have to "upgrade" my desktop to it too.
>>106278014
No, the methods within MAS don't alter any Windows files so it can't cause random BSODs.
HWID and TSforge StaticCID are online based while TSforge KMS4k is the best offline based method currently.
>>106278048
Well it ain't MAS's fault. Seems like something's wrong at the hardware level maybe.
Are you actually writing down the error codes and looking it up?

The folderβs existence, along with specific ACLs, is required by the CVE-2025-21204 security fix.
Deletion or incorrect permissions nullify the effectiveness of the patch and could re-expose vulnerable systems.
Microsoft provides official guidance, updated as of late May 2025, for safely restoring the folder if deleted.

Is it the XPS that doesn't support UEFI or 7 you're claiming of?
Because if the latter, Windows has been capable of UEFI and GPT booting since Vista x64 SP1, albeit it still required the firmware implementation to have support for legacy BIOS interrupt 10h for the VGA graphics (so you're practically limitted to UEFI Class 2 devices.)
Only since 8.0 does Windows support pure UEFI (Class 3) devices and the GOP protocol.
>>106275086 (OP)
It looks like Microsoft is finally gonna force me to do it anons. Does anyone have experience running W11 on skylake processors or earlier? Are there any bugs or issues to be aware of, or has it been smooth sailing so far?
I'm probably gonna try to do an in-place upgrade early next month just because I can't be assed to redo everything.
>>106278595
To have the least amount of issues on an "unsupported" machine then just use IoT LTSC 2024, which is made to run on anything newer then a 64-bit Core 2 Duo
I have a Lenovo thinkbook and I like it... Except it uses windows 11. I hate windows 11. I don't know if installing windows 10 is an option, I tried with another laptop and some things like the touchpad wasn't working because of drivers and non compatibility with windows 10.
I would rather debloat windows than use Linux. What do I do? OP says to wait for windows 11 ltsc
>Avoid W11 at all costs unless you bought crippled hardware (Intel estrogen cores) that need the new CPU scheduler in W11.
Why do you always talk in meme language, I don't know what the fuck is an Intel estrogen core, what Intel cores are you talking about?
>>106278879
I just don't know what the fuck is an Intel estrogen core. What the fuck is that lingo? I can't read your mind.
I just want to know if my laptop is windows 10 compatible or not, I wanna know if I'm forced to use windows 11 ltsc or if I can still use windows 10 for more years to come.
>>106278890
I hate when people make guides and assume you know all the stupid language and vocabulary they are using. It's completely retarded to make a guide like that. You just waste everyone's time searching for terms.
>>106278458 >M$s shitty APIs that make it hard to not accidentally TOCTOU yourself or sanity check ACLs plus allowing C:\ ACL being user writable and inheritable has caused a CVE
I honestly wonder why there aren't more. Thankfully I have IIS installed since I test with it.
>>106278890
OP means e-cores (or efficiency cores)
A new style of core that's been added to Intel CPUs over the years and only 11 can use properly, otherwise you can just disable e-core usage in the BIOS. Though if you do this you lose a bunch of your CPU's cores.
Also if the laptop doesn't have any official 10 drivers then you're most likely out of like unless something like SDIO can grab something for you.
>>106275938
Why also insist on using it for the boot drive? My guess is the biggest problem you may have is MB support for UEFI (a fully updated 64-bit win7 should support GPT/UEFI just fine) but if its all supported you'll probably have to carefully clone the drive to a GPT system then use the Windows tools to expand the partitions and then switch it to UEFI / rebuild the boot partition but I don't really want to do someone else's job for them. >refuses to upgrade to a modern OS >many TBs of data
>>106278936
Literally first result >Total Cores 12 ># of Performance-cores 2 ># of Efficient-cores 8
Supposedly Win10 22H2 has "decent" support for them and can actually handle scheduling across the different core types but Win11 will use the hardware scheduler so you can expect measurably better perf. and power savings (probably less than 10% difference tho.)
>>106279044 >making the windows 11 experience not horrendous?
Just disable the slow ass animations and enable old context menu. I also disable the recommended section in start menu but that's regular LTSC only, not IoT LTSC

Lmao just download it anywhere, I'm sure if you're using MAS you can also work out how to get a cmd/pwsh prompt in a particular directory
Btw my Lenovo thinkbook takes like 1 minute to boot and it stays like almost one minute at a black screen before showing up the Lenovo logo. It started extremely fast when I bought it but after a million updates and programs it does this. This problem persists even when I did a factory reset.
Dunno if I have a crypto miner or something like that. Or if it's just Microsoft's/Lenovo incompetence (most likely)

Uh.... Does this mean IIS admins who may not have "admin" can use this bug to run code as SYSTEM? how exactly is this vulnerability triggered? Like what file is being made that Windows is looking at?
1) Are there any drawbacks to this besides automated repair systems not liking it and the risk that comes from losing the MBR drive?
2) Is it safe to do this with an existing drive that already has stuff on it without wiping it?
>>106279978 >2) Is it safe to do this with an existing drive that already has stuff on it without wiping it. If you need to ask why don't you have a backup disk if your data is so important to you.
What is so important that you want to install Windows 7 and mess up your partition table?
>>106278464
Huh, really? I tried booting Windows 7 on UEFI in a VM as part of an experiment and it got stuck
Thinking about it now, I heard about the graphics kerfuffle when it comes to UEFI booting but never looked into how that was "supposed" to be circumvented.
So I guess it really is just a limitation of the XPS (which IIRC is an XPS Studio 9000). Heck, I even popped in a Windows 11 install drive (created through Rufus) just to see how the PC would handle it, and got a message basically saying the USB drive was UEFI only
>>106279978
Why would you do this? Use a secondary drive if needed for all your data. Don't forget to have a couple backups of whatever you don't want to lose. Use Macrium Reflect 7 Free to make a backup copy of your Windows 7 install, too, if desired - just make sure you have no errors in Event Viewer to make sure you are backing up a pristine install.
>>106279991
I have a client that has been wanting to hang on to Windows 7 as long as possible, and I,guess that goes for the hardware as well. He already has a 2TB boot drive and it's almost full, and he wants to go even bigger even though he has a few other drives
Funny thing is, among his drives is the old HHD from before it was cloned to an SSD. I know the feeling easier thing would be to just replace that and set the old drive aside, but be seemed to want a bigger C drive
>>106280292
Agreed. I'll try and convince him that that would be the easiest option. If this was a UEFI-capable PC, I'm sure there are hacks to fix any setbacks, but that might involve more technical stuff than I am comfortable doing
Also, on a,semi related note, I already know about Macrium Reflect. It's my go to for cloning.
I did have one case where a cloning failed at the last minute (after several hours), something about a CRC failure. A read-only chkdsk saw nothing wrong, but maybe I should do one of the other chkdsk modes? Or use a alternative (even though I would also have to move from MBR to GPT (this isn't a boot drive so I should be okay)). Or maybe make and image and use that, even though the overall process would take twice as long
>>106280385
CRC failure means there was an error in the process. Most likely simply need to repeat what you did and it might come out right on the second try. This sometimes happens with downloads. It is uncommon, but it happens, that's why good content providers also include hashes so you can double check the integrity of your download and re-download if necessary. Windows has its own CRC calculations when moving files from one drive to another, for example, no matter the kind, so that file transfers can always be perfect and reliable.
Poor quality USB and SATA cables can force Windows to spend more time doing CRC checks and re-copying data, which slows down file transfers within a system a little bit, did you know?
>>106280364
I do. Serial terminal, Telnet and SSH client all in a few kilobytes. When you work in the real world, with real enterprise kit of all different ages, you're mad not to have it on your laptop.
>>106280506
Not relevant. I'm NTA, but he did specifically say SATA cables too.
There are other ways: I saw an SAS HBA pack it in recently, but instead of simply dying, it started slowly corrupting drives that were attached to it.
Thankfully, it had only trashed a few hundred GB of files (the way/pattern that it trashed files was easy to detect), which were restored from backup once a new HBA went in.
>install windows ioc ltsc >takes just a few minutes >open sidebar, less than 10 entries >didnt even type in a product key

NTA: I get that all this markup stuff arr rook same, but no fucking way you would convince me that DirectUI (which I believe uses XML for the markup structure) used in the shell is "interpreted JavaScript".
Though MS has goofed with using HTA/DHTML for parts of the shell (including logonui) even further in the cancelled Neptune project. I'll give you that. These were the miserable Active Desktop times. >unless you're fishing for some (You)s with that bait.

MyPal68 is a fork of an old Firefox ESR version made to be up to date with a lot of modern web stuff. You can use that to browse the sites you're talking about.
This is nice. It's weird how consistent Windows has stayed over the years, while mac and linux have changed so much their UI paradigms.
I'm talking about taking a screenshot and pasting it in paint, for example. You can't take a 1998 MacOS or GNOME user forwards in time and expect him to know what the fuck is going on with their OS in 2025.
Now back to playing YU-NO. Too bad I ran out of beer on a Sunday.
>>106290147
you're missing the point, but you're also defending M$ while posting their garbage posts so I don't know what to expect.
Linux just works with MBR partitioned disks, in fact, you could do no partitioned disks if you can manage to inject, kernel + initrd and exec somewhere.
Linux just works without some faggy TPM device.
Linux just works without vmx+iommu
It's clear Windows 11 can equally work as much as 10 did for these setups, no matter how sub-optimal or memey they were, so what's the *real* excuse? best non-malicious one I can think of is maintenance burden of diverging configurations.
>>106290171
Yes, the LTSC editions.
Note that these "requirements" can be bypassed in SAC editions: they're "support" requirements, not "functional" requirements. Windows actually degrades fairly gracefully (usually only taking performance hits) right down to decades-old machines - 23H2, for example, ran on a 20 year-old Athlon 64.
However, 24H2 mandates certain CPU instructions (POPCNT is the most famous) which were introduced in first-gen Core i*s and AMD FX - it won't run on anything earlier than this, no matter how many regedits you throw at it.
>>106290242

>>106290374 >sudo
what the fuck are you blabbering about?
the only reliable way to get setuid() on Windows is to make a custom program that probes and prods the LSA subsystem, similar to how OpenSSH Server works on Windows. runas is not even remotely the same as sudo and you'd know this if you knew anything about software.
either way, I'm not even talking about whatever fresh hell windows "sudo" is, I'm talking about basic shit like unix domain sockets, eBPF, symbolic links, containers, futex, working C99 libc (UCRT), afd poll based IO, and a shitload more.

I don't know why this is still a topic in this general. It's basically shitposting because it is a load of total bullshit in a personal context. if you're a member of Administrators, you just use:
Start-Process -Verb RunAs -FilePath yourcommandhere -ArgumenList 'args', 'go', 'here'
yourcommandhere can be an absolute path, or if your machine %PATH% has it, you can leave it unqualified.
It's not really the same as sudo though because you can't run it, in-line with your current terminal because of how Windows works. runas.exe is pretty shitty honestly, but a lot of the built-ins in Windows are. You just have to find the parts of powershell that mog the old tools and use the old tools that are less fucky when appropriate.

I disagree. In my many years of experience (mostly useless), I've learned that if I'm brooding over something, there's a good chance hundreds of other people are, too. I'm not that special.
Once we get over the wow of consumerist technology, we will slowly crawl back to soul, and let our own souls express themselves in media again, now much more affordable.
The fact that I can type this post on Windows XP, have access to an LLM, spell checking, and a handful of other amenities that we tend to think are a byproduct of having to bear with Windows 11 is a testament to that. We DON'T need to bear with Windows 11, or any other enshittified modern piece of crap. The software problem was solved ages ago, and we just added useless layers on top in order to make profit for corporations that are as fragile as they are huge. All it takes is for silicon chip manufacturing to survive the bursting of the mother of all bubbles (late-stage capitalistm), and we can refocus. Taking advantage of everything we learned along the way, and discarding the rest.
>>106290805
assuming the same user you normally use is in sudoers, ya, this is basically the closest answer.
Windows and POSIXy systems are just not similar enough.
POSIXy systems have ways of just setting UID, setuid(), to whatever.
Windows, you are supposed to setup a custom Logon process to do it.
You know that "the internet used to be a place" meme, and the "your feeling makes your reality" crowd? They're onto something really important, even though they don't really know it. Reality is huge. Human society creates a shared mental space that is host to so many different experiences and frames of reference, that one single person is unable to hold them all in his awareness at any given time.
The internet used to feel like a place, because we had no choice but to go to a place (our computer desks) to experience it. It wasn't still available everywhere.
But it being readily available did not change anything. Our relationship with it changed, and with it, our feeling of it; feeling creates your perception of reality, which in turn influences your behavior, and the reaction of the world to your behavior.
We got tricked into feeling reality was something that it isn't. That's why you feel bad about what it has become. It's fake. The internet is *still* a place; you just forgot to feel it like one.
I understand it is unrealistic to expect one to just flip a switch and start feeling reality is something it doesn't appear to be out of one's ass. That's why "baby duck" experiences are important. They are a crutch to feeling reality as it should be again. Efforts to reclaim functionality in Windows XP, or Windows 7, are not mere futile exercises in nostalgia (although sometimes they are). They are literal magic spells that summon back the spirit of a sane world.

>>106289779 >XP control panel (*.CPL) files
Of course you'd be paying attention to these specific applets - XP's control panel inherited the Web View from ME (which in turn was probably inspired by Neptune's idea of web-based UI, like the ill-fated Activity Centers) and made it default, although it still had the good ol' classic view.
Had an XP SP3 (maybe it's different in the RTM release?) VM ready, unpacked contents of the .cpls in System32 with 7-Zip: only 2 of those built-in applets are proven to be HTA-based in plain sight: appwiz and nusrmgr (fun fact: the applet was initially developed for the Neptune project). Regardless, not related to the DirectUI framework used.
Not that any of that would matter after the Explorer (and thus control panel) rewrite in Vista, as all these integrated control panel applets are basically shell folder-based: rendered by DirectUI-based explorer. None of that HTA bullshit. >not to mention how MS tries to move all of the settings to the Immersive Settings app, anyways.
Amazed? Rather disappointed. If that's all the evidence you've got of "every version of Windows since XP has written large parts of its UI in actual, textual, interpreted JavaScript.", then the argument seems poor.

Your trips are greater than my dubs, but nevertheless, I think you miss my point. My post could be rewritten replacing the whole spiel about the internet for an argument against the printing press versus oral tradition.
What I'm really talking about here is an invasion of the imaginal by ideas that hurt the human spirit. It can take many forms, and will happen again countless time as history unfolds.
If I understand correctly, we have UAC because of how overly complicated it is to create an additional non-admin account for daily use and reserving your admin account for when you really need to install or tweak stuff, which would create increased security sort of like crApple and Linux.
>>106291406 >implying anybody needs to disprove the childish and hypocritical babblings of a baby duck
Considering how much and how often you're mocked - even in this shithole - I wouldn't project so hard if I were you.
THEY'VE DELETED 2 OF MY POSTS

MY BOY ASKED FOR MORE HOT SHIT, I MUST PROVIDE MTY BOY HOT SHIT
I bet the guy that reported me is a fat loser virgin faggot balding wagie XD KAKSOISPISTE DEH DEH DEH DEH DEH

Hey anon, I followed some instructions that claimed(based on what this thread said that LTSC is binary identical to IoT), that you can install IoT by using the key and putting it in a LTSC ISO, using "PID.txt" and deleting ei.cfg.
I did some experimentation and installed LTSC when OOBE came, Ctrl + Alt + F3 and changed the edition via changepk, it went OK and winver says it is IoT.
>no store >no apps
I did it because I wanted IoT installed in "El Spanisho", as the original ISO only has "English MF do you speak it".
Sound like a hassle free installation compared to "edition the iso".
>>106291939 >he's still stuck on the default "baby duck" loop
I really love how you try to present your own introspections onto others, lolcow. Still remember that spergout you had a few generals ago about le baby ducks not appreciating your tile UI mommy OS for tablets.
Keep it up and you might land yourself a footnote on some hundred-page-long thread on KF. >reminder: DirectUI is not a JS- nor HTA-based framework.

thank you for your service, mikucoomer o7

Stupid question but if I use MAS to activate windows is there a way to "undo" the process and return my copy of Windows to being unactivated again? (Without doing a clean install)
>>106292547
You're welcome :3
I'm banned again on my fiber optics XD
I didn't even post lude shit again on muh yotsuba shit boards
I think the fucking loser jannies are watching
>>106292547
The difference between you and me is that I repeat facts - you repeat cope to cover that you're poor and stupid.
This is why you have to hide in a NEET safespace with likeminded losers - the only people who'll agree with you.

How can I be a wetback when I never left my country?
Seriously. niggerfag, crawl back to your crime infested LA, ShitCAGO or Basedattle and maybe, just maybe, you stop being a stupid nigger.
With that answer you just proved that you're nigger. I've been around Whites and it shows you're not.
>>106293017 >delusions of grandeur
Yup, you are the only one in the whole clear Web blessed with the holy knowledge of Winblows... sans for the fact that DirectUI (still used in modern releases of) not being JS/HTA-based, oddly enough.
We all know how your cycle ends: (You) being so unhinged that it gets you b&, then complaining like a jew about le freetard janny cabal persecuting you for the 109th time and how you'll leave this cambodian competitive fishing newsgroup, only to come back days later with the cycle resetting.
Funnily, you perfectly fit here in this shithole of a board - along with other lolcows like bruce3434, MikeeUSA, Daiz/SS2 et al.
>>106288287 >one settings screen being a React Native component (that is compiled down to XAML and WinUI) somehow means that the entire UI is written in React
did you actually even read your own link, zoom zoom?
>>106290906 >>106290988 >actual retards who unironically think the world doesn't change, the internet doesn't change
Why do I even bother at this point.
Between bots/LLMs, feds, trannies, phoneposters, and idiots like you, I'd be better off just leaving this place and never coming back.
>>106294031
probably. this general in particular is bad. I came here originally to try and learn and understand windows better, but this place is full of the dumbest niggers I've ever dealt with. very rarely do I find anything useful ITT.
Recently found out that you can download app installers right from Microsoft Store's web version. That's fuckin' cool, I don't need to install this awful store on LTSC ever again
What sort of option should I be looking for in the Bios, then? I've accessed the Bios of one of my computer maybe 3 times in my life, at best, it's not something I use frequently, so I wouldn't know what to look for unless it's very obvious
>>106298472
Keep seething, lolcow. None of your projections regarding "le poors" and "le ducks" won't change the fact DirectUI is not and will always not be a JS/HTA framework. Not to mention your epic fail when you have mistaken these two technologies. >also be creative with those "insults", anyone with at least half a brain can recognise your writing style from a mile away >then again, lolcows always regurgitate their own catchphrases, no wonder you're still pushing le baby duck forced meme for all these years
>>106300442 >the brainless duck >so frightened of text on a screen and being called names >tries to sneak in a parting shot
What a piece of shit your entire lineage is.
>>106300454
Aww, how cute. And yet DirectUI is still not a JS/HTA framework, no matter how much you're gonna quintuple down on your own mistake with so much butthurt.
Don't let the UIFILEs and XML structures spook you, anon. Or lest you'll be frightened that logonui is also a HTM application. All hail Active Desktop :^) >i swear this board has the best lolcows. Not even MikeeUSA is that unhinged when he spergs about ReiserFS being gone from Loonix every thread or two >btw i love the samefagging that you do sometimes; again - someone with at least half a brain can detect it
C'mon dumbshit trannyduck - thread's nearly on page 11 now. Come be a coward again by trying to slip another one of your pathetic and repetitive "n-no u" insults under the radar.
I promise I won't blow you and your entire inbred family's fucking heads off, honest.
