Alrighty, so today I attempted to do proper gesture studies using references. I did some sandbag practice prior, which I think helped a bit. But how do these look? Do they work as gestures? I tried to make sure the proportions were on point enough btw and did struggle with that at first. These were done in like 15 minutes each or so.

This quickly turned into nightmare fuel but I kinda like it still

The issue is gesture drawings vary in how they look quite a lot, though the main thing is they are more about the flow and feel of a pose, not the detail or form so much.

Yes gesture drawings vary in how they look but it's clear from the drawings and what you said that you weren't drawing gesturally.
Spend less time on them, don't try to do construction, and don't worry about proportions. You're absolutely right it's about capturing the flow of the pose, use your lines to capture that flow, think about how the muscles flow into each other as you draw them.

The head feels just a little bit too big while the torso is just a little bit too squashed, both add up to make the proportions feel off. Not bad tho anon

i think i'm done with tweaking this for now, the more i tweak the more it messes with something else so i don't think i'm gonna get it much better unless i redraw the whole thing, so i'll keep it here and say im happy with it. the shoes still aren't great and in the wrong perspective but it's the best i've got :( big thanks to the redlining anon for the tips though, hope i fixed the issues he raised.

For how you draw faces you need to make a few small but important changes. I tried to do them here without changing the style too much so you can see.

First, the eyes are too close together. Typically you want around one eye of space in the middle between the two eyes.

Second, the forehead is too small for the anime style you're going for. Go look at some references and pay attention to how truly massive the space above the eyes really is. The more cute the style the more brain room.

Third, the ears are a little too high and disconnected from the jaw. Start thinking about the connection between the jaw and the ear to help guide your placement. They are intertwined.

Last, the hair has no volume and the shape appeal is off. This is my biggest struggle so I can't tell you exactly how to fix this, but avoid repeating exact shapes like you do for the bangs, and don't make the long strands so bendy. It messes up the form of the head.

While I agree line variation is a quality you can explore, it's not going to carry your work as heavily as the shapes and value composition. You can think of line quality as how to accentuate/clarify/intensify an idea to the audience. There are many ways to communicate fur with line that changes the expression. Something jagged and sharp will feel aggressive, whereas making the it soft instead of sharp will lessen/undermine that idea. Other than that use reference and hone your observational skills. Lines on the inside of a figure tend to do better when thinner/lighter.

You're missing the forest for the trees here. Focus on the big light and shadow shapes. Maybe not best to try and draw what you can't see and don't know.

You need to know whether they are wrong. Why do you think they went wrong? You need to be able to assess why you think they're wrong with an objective statement. Are they too big/small. too tall/wide? Are they placed correctly relative to the shape of the head/face? Then you check to see if your assessment is correct after the fact when you overlay it over the reference. I know this might seem like a silly question to ask, but how do you know if a circle is wrong or in the right spot?

Not sure if you watched the video or not, after he goes over sight size he goes into just using your eyes. Eyeballing is still measuring, your just using eyes with no tools. You'll still be making judgments and more importantly, you're still thinking and making observations. You're just doing it without the measuring implement/tool. I don't need a plumb line to tell when another point is on top of the other unless they're really close. But you're going to need to know eventually when you're wrong. I don't think you're at a level where you shouldn't be checking. I think you should make the observation with an objective statement (i. e. The width of the eye is the smaller than the width of the nose by 1/5 more or less.) using your eyes, make the mark on the page and then verify whether the observation is true. If false, change the mark on the page. This way you still retain the eyeballing portion of the exercise, but you can know whether it's true or not.

I thought her ear was some sort of mouth at first glance. I can tell she's a deer girl but the context of what she's supposed to be didn't click for me without scanning the drawing in more detail. Maybe you cropped it too tight.

Her nose tip being solid black also stood out to me as I thought it was an error. You can try adding a bit of highlight, maybe that'll make the nose more distinct.

Was drawing from morpho when I realized my perspective is so fucking WACK so I decided to just doodle skulls in perspective and note where I fucked up
Perspective shouldn't be this hard, you can just see it easily by looking at it with your eyeballs

having a hell of a time with tennas whole hand, and also on kris's mouth/teeth. I really want it to look like tennas getting in there, it's pretty flat. I wanted him to fishhook the corner of the mouth but I don't think I can make it look right with such a small head/mouth

How do you actually use construction? Everytime I draw something by reference and use construction the final result looks like shit. If I copy something by just eyeballing the lines that I see the result is way better.
