Not that anon but this placement is much better, or at least more accurate. You still aren't really following your brow line as closely as you should be, and that construction line under the eye isnt consistent with it which could be dire in more cases

Can someone tell me why these aren't gestures? I swear these are, but they look so bad and don't resemble the anatomy at all, I know this thread is full of elitist know it alls but can someone explain to me how I am supposed to actually gesture? I just can't capture the pose or anatomy quickly yet.

You should be using your guidelines less as a general point of reference, and more as literal construction to build out of.

Look at this picture and the way the middle line (top of the eye socket / brow) is part of the actual face geometry on the right, and why that makes it so important for your "under eye line", to be consistent when you build out the facial features

Visualize drawing less like finding correct line placement to sketch in features, and more like forming something out of clay. That's what helped me.

This is why btw, it's typically better to learn how to draw "realistically" compared to jumping into a cartoon style. You need to know how to make these forms first so you can then properly subvert them in different styles. Just some advice, though I know a lot of people don't actually go that route these days

If I prioritize too many shapes everything comes out boxy and awkward, but if I flow with the gesture without construction the whole thing is a mess

Do the circle like this. Do the vertical division to the left (or to the direction the face is looking) instead of the exact center. Same with the horizontal line, do it slightly lower than the center. This horzontal line will be the most usefull, use it as the bottom of the eyes, where the nose is and also where the top part of the ear and the head connects.
The vertical line should also overshoot outisde of the circle to show where the chin will go.

It's all proportions anon. The trick is just to get really good at mentally spacing the distance between the parts of the face you care about.

This goes for all styles. Using the Loomis method is just a way to get good proportions, so is every other method for constructing a face. If you want to make appealing faces you take artists you like and figure out how they proportion the face.

I tried estimating where the pelvis would be if I extended the legs up a normal amount. And it actually lines up quite nicely with the waist, so I thinks that's where you had them as well.
But for both, if we take the length from heels to crotch, it's way less than half. Obviously you can play around with proportions, which is why I asked if it was intentional. The relation of legs to the rest of the body in yours are kinda similar to shortstack proportions, but those are usually drawn with a much smaller torso and a larger head.
If you're going for more "normal" proportions though, I'd really recommend sticking at least a little closer to the 1/2 1/2 division. Especially when you add things like bunny ears that make the upper body look even bigger.

I resized your images a bit to show you what it would look like with a higher crotchline.

Also, the bent leg of the right figure is pretty uneven. The lower leg is usually about as long if not a little longer than the upper leg (depending on where you measure exactly)
Also also, the arms on the left one are a little long. You can really tell in my resized images, but even in yours, the wrist of the arm with the microphone almost reaches the crotchline despite not being at rest. I've drawn in the arc to shopw where it would be at rest and it's pretty low.

I'd recommend taking a look at proportions again. Doesn't mean you have to stick to them, but understanding what is normal might help you change them in a way that still looks appealing.

It's not "a random line down" actually. I used to draw the line at the middle, then draw another line above and under the middle line always in a consistent way. With time and practice I just stopped drawing the middle and upper line and just went directly to the bottom line which is the most useful. Sorry for not clarifying that.

Anyhow, what I am working on right now. It's not shadows but I am trying to learn how to draw expressive faces (with the same character as earlier). This looks awful right now but this is just the layout, the proper rough sketch will look leagues better...on that note I can't draw faces well in one go yet. I always have to draw a bad face first and then draw the superior more appealing face after.

Idk dawg. Using references is normal, every professional artist does it. It’s how you build visual accuracy and intuition. Even if you feel confident drawing a certain body part, you can still mess up perspective and end up with a torso facing one way and legs going another (pic related). Then you waste time redrawing, getting frustrated, and eventually tossing the piece.

References prevent that. Style isn’t something you pick first; it grows from your particular insights and the small, informed rule-breaking you develop over time. They also speed up how fast you strengthen your fundamentals.

Even when you think there’s no reference for the pose you have in mind, you can sketch it out and use an image generator to visualize your idea. Compare the two, it’s basically checking your work with a calculator.

In the end, references save time, time you can reinvest into drawing more. More volume means faster growth, and speed is just a byproduct of solid fundamentals.

you can make it easier on yourself with 2 crutches:
the first is to turn the image to grayscale, since hue and chroma really distract from making value judgements
the second is to blur + posterize the image to your target amount of values, which turns the exercise into simply copying abstract shapes
I recommend starting with the second and quickly moving into the first, and spending a while just with grayscale

Anyone have advice for getting your pencil to do what you want it to do? I'm finding a huge hurdle is the ability to draw the same line twice, and while my understanding of fundamentals and how to study them is growing, my ability to draw lines and circles/ellipses how i want sure as fuck isn't. I do this and add dots until I clayshaped the rough circle into place, then use my good stroke directions and follow my markings, (not in one go circle is usually a handful of lines) turn the canvas when you draw in directions that are unfavorable to your hand movement.

I was thinking I made the thighs too long so I think you're right that it's off. That also means the skirt and arms are too long, so I probably overcompensated for the low angle of the pose. I did a more 3d construction, which no, isn't finished, I was tired sleepy and depressed today and didn't have the mental energy to draw much at all. Even if that was the case I wouldn't have shaded the picture, my main focus was on proportion and pose, and even then it's not that good looking.

It's better than not drawing at all, and if you are wondering this took me around an hour or so to draw but longer because I was tired and distracted by other stuff. It's still better than focusing on Lining and Texturing though in my case.

I actually did use blood earlier this year for drawing, just to see how it held up. it wasn't too bad, just waiting for out to coagulate a bit so it's better as ink was the tough thing to gauge. it's been months since I've cut though, dw. I would recommend just using red ink instead lol

probably shouldn't have mentioned your trans here, everyone here is a closeted chaser so they're going to be mad at you even though they want to fuck you.Anyways if you want advice I'd say practice on drawing breasts. the perspective isn't awful and you'll learn with time, the rest of the anatomy is fine but the breasts just look really unnatural, and to be honest the proportions of the arms to the rest of the body just isn't right, I'd make the arms thicker so they look in place with the rest of the body, heads a little small too.

all in all this is standard /beg/ stuff and you're going to get better but you really shouldn't de-anonymize yourself

Funny thing is, I never actually did myself, it was another tranny doing it because they were pissed at me IG. And yeah the anatommy in general is kinda off and the perspective doesn't really show either. many practice required to make this better. I took in maybe too much of an undertaking when I can barely even paint or do proper perspective. Thanks anyways. As of today I’ve been drawing for four years (started in 2021). I’ve improved but nowhere near as quickly as others around me as I’m not even mid-beg tier. The worst part is I can’t in post my work because I have no work to post—somewhere along the way I stopped actually drawing and now endlessly “practice.” I say it in quotations because the only consistent thing I’ve done and stuck to is basic and 3D shapes. Trying to learn how to draw made me realize two things: I’m extremely dumb—Regardless of method or how something is explained I will always fail to understand at first. And that, despite my inherit stupidity I am also extremely stubborn. I’m still going to continue drawing. Maybe I’ll even actually have something to post soon.
