There are people who inflate their steam numbers for the lulz, by running the game on several devices at the same time. Or at least that was a thing in the past as maybe steam has patched that by now. Basically they let their devices run even even though they did not use it and that pumped the stat that shows how much time they spent playing. You are right, but the flip side of that is that the victim was an 88 year old man who was already in poor health and didn't die directly from the result of his injuries, so it would have extremely difficult to get any kind of murder/manslaughter charge to stick.

The main problem is that the UK is very reluctant to put people in prison at the moment because we are at almost 100% capacity and have no more space for prisoners. It's gotten so bad that the government is actually shortening prison sentences to free up space.
