Steering is very noisy, creaking like old floorboards. Doesn't do it all the time though. When it is doing it it makes noise whenever I turn the wheel, including when stationary, but also tends to make noise when driving straight
Been doing this for probably over a year now so I guess nothings about to blow up but it is a bit disconcerting. Anyone know what the cause might be?

The one on the left is a low profile jack, meaning the jack itself isn't nearly as tall as the one on the right. Some cars are low enough to the ground that you may not be able to get the right one under them, and thelo profile jack is also a lot easier to use with the longer handle.

>So "2v" was only used to describe mustangs after 4v/3v ones came out, got it
Not necessarily. You don't see it much after the Seventies but Ford used 2V/4V to describe the carburetor type and therefore engine power. The V stood for Venturi so a 2V was a 2-barrel and the 4V was a 4-barrel. (Yes, there were 6 and 8V's too even further back) So it would be more proper to think that the 2V/4V designation refers to valves on EFI vehicles instead of the blanket "mustangs".

Short term there's not really much to worry about.
Keep the battery charged so it will actually start when you need it to, a trickle charger is best.
Change the oil every 6 months regardless of miles.
Conventional wisdom is to keep the tank full so the fuel doesn't have room to evaporate and it won't get a layer of sludge on the bottom. Won't matter though, gas takes years to get to that point and you'll still be cycling your tank more often than that even if you're just driving weekends. Don't be surprised if your fuel economy plummets though, cold starts suck a lot of fuel.
If this ends up being a long-term thing, keep your car in a garage. Cars that sit outside rust worse than outside cars that are driven daily.
Rodents are also often a problem, they see immobile cars as free real estate and can be incredibly destructive.
At some point you may want to evaluate how much you're driving and consider carsharing services if there are any available in your area. Renting a car once a week to get groceries may actually be cheaper than paying registration and insurance, depreciation etc. on a car that you barely use.

Probably. Also harder and slower to operate, probably shoddier, might not fit under your car if it's low enough. There is another type of jacks you might be interested in, they are generally cheaper, more compact and do not require smooth floors: hydraulic bottle jacks. Their only disadvantage is they are slower, but $35 trolley jack isn't going to be fast either.
I also hope you have jack stands and wheel chocks as well, anon. Don't jack your vehicle up without them.

No. Nothing made in the last 10 years is worth driving. Cars have been absolutely ruined by jews, women, brown people, and their "safety standards"
I've thought about buying a LS400 but my only concern is when it eventually breaks can I still get most parts to keep it going?
American cars seem appealing solely for the ability to get practically any part for the low from a random bumfuck auto store.

Jumper from the connection in question to the chassis. Or you can do something like below
>how do you find a bad cable splice?
Put a multimeter into continuity mode and put one lead on each side of the splice. If it beeps, the connection is good.
You could connect one lead to the chassis and touch the other lead to any grounds you think are bad. If it doesn't beep, the ground connection is open.
OR you could also put the red multimeter lead on the battery positive and test for voltage at the questionable ground. A voltage reading would mean a good connection.

looks pretty minor, i've seen these much much worse than this. the places frames really rust on these is by the gastank and the downward bend on both sides of the frame back by the muffer where salt accumulates and rots them from the inside out. look for soft spots you can poke with a screwdriver or cracks in that area. if it's all just surface rust like this it's good, just make sure to fluid film every year to keep it from getting worse
Would these be good for working on a car if I don't have a lift? And how the hell do you transport something like this? Rent a trailer?

Not much to worry about on those cars because they're so simple. My 2 cents, rust will be the limiting factor in keeping those cars alive to 20+ years as it's a detriment to both reliability and ease of repair. Compare the pictures of the engine bays for the 2012 and the 2013, the 2013 has quite a bit of visible rust so I would skip that one. If the 2012 is as clean on the bottom as it is up top that would be ideal. No idea about the 2014, probably best if you get underneath the 2012 and 2014 in person and compare them, a little bit of rust on a 13 year old car isn't a deal breaker but if there's a clear difference go for the one that isn't rotten.

Somewhat dependant on where you live. I live in PA, and the underside of pretty much every car on the road up here is rusted to shit because of all the salt on the roads in the winter. I've heard that people that live near the ocean can have their cars rust out because of the salt in the air.

I wouldn't; it doesn't really seem worth it. It's surface rust, like you said, and it doesn't seem nearly bad enough to affect the structural integrity of it.
If you really wanted to, you could sand/brush the rust off and throw some Rust-Oleum on it, but by the time the rust got bad enough to be a real issue, you'll have moved on to a different car.

>How do I stop being scared of learning manual
By nutting up and getting in the driver's seat and doing it.
>How do I stop my anxiety of stalling
By learning to drive manual, which guarantees you're going to stall it sometimes. I've driven manuals for 15 years and still will have the occasional stall. They happen and aren't the end of the world. Once you get a feel for where the clutch starts to grab, it will get easier.
Taking off in first gear is the hardest part; shifting up and down from there is much easier.
Protip: if you have to take off from a stop up a hill, you can use your e-brake to cheat without rolling back. When you engage the e-brake then let off the brake pedal, the ass end of your car will rise a little. When it's time to go, let off the clutch and press the gas until you feel the rear of the car start to drop. When it does, let down the e-brake and you should be able to go without rolling back.
>>28609197 (OP)
Brakes are starting to feel a little spongey. They engage just fine, but it feels like the pedal will continue to press in for another half an inch or so. Fluid tank is at max level and looks clean, no noticable leaks making it to the driveway, plenty of pad left. Intend to flush fluid anyway see if it helps. Worried either calipers or master cylinder starting to go since it's old but it all appears to work ok. either that or I am being thrown off by my sim racing pedals, they're stiff AF.

hose pincher pliers (picrel), or if you're cheap duct tape some pieces of rubber over the jaws of vice grips so the metal doesnt cut into the brake hoses
Why exactly I shouldn't replace the rotten steel fuel lines of my project car with just regular fuel hose?
Obviously I'm going to tuck it inside the fender so it doesn't accidentally get punctured by a freak antler or leg bone, but otherwise I don't really see any downsides personally aside for needing more fixture points than steel lines so it doesn't flop about and sag.
I just need a single fuel line from the tank to the carb, no return lines whatsoever

it would probably work though rubber is more likely to get snagged on things, pinched, kinked, wear through, burn through etc. plus steel fuel line is cheaper and it's easier to work with imo. if it were me i would do it right with steel line, but if you just run rubber line it'll probably be ok if you route it carefully and tie it up well.

Some meters have a function that will beep for a good connection, but that one will still do it. Turn the knob 180° so it points to the 200Ω position, then test across the questionable splices. You want as low of a number as possible. If it doesn't show a reading or says OL,the connection is no good. If you touch the meter leads to each other, that will show you what a good connection looks like.
If the number wildly fluctuates while you wiggle the splice, it needs redone.

I've managed to redo my entire suspension on my Slowbalt, except the sway bar itself since the transmission had to be lowered to put it in. On my current car, I've done CV axles, coolant and transmission fluid changes, as well as the AC pump, which was probably the most involved of anything so far.

>the naysayers
I'm just keeping it real with you. Mechanics themselves say all this. The pay system usually has you work unpaid hours. You probably get treated like shit, and you have to work for free sometimes. If a job goes wrong, your pay gets snagged. The manufacturer warranties basically exist to screw you, the technician, over. Warranties pay way less hours than you need to do the job, and you're the one stuck making up the difference. Not to mention the job is physically taxing, quite unhealthy, unsafe, and you need your own tools. And it'll suck all the car passion out of you. You'll start to realize that almost every vehicle is trash. Even vehicles you liked before will be ruined, when you realize just how poorly they're designed.
>final verdict
You're better off doing a better trade like HVAC, plumbing, electrician, etc. And if you like motors so much, then go be a diesel fleet mechanic or something. But the automotive industry sucks, and gets worse every day. The only promised land is if you get your own garage, at which point you'd be battling the manufacturer, who wants you and your family dead for owning a private repair shop.

As for car passion, I don't really have a passion for them. Doing work on vehicles is just something that works for me because I'm mechanically inclined, it's working with my hands, it's something to put my mind to, I can try figuring out the issues, etc. I know they're designed like shit though. When I was doing my Slowbalt's suspension, there was a nut that was too thin to hold up to wrenching on it, so they both stripped and had to get cut off.
I just need a job that lines up with how my head works and that I can learn something from and put to use in the future.
My main work has been in the electronics field. Fuck being an electrician though; 12 AWG can eat my short dick.

Hate to say this, but you can get a construction job for $20 under the table (tax free) easily, where you'll learn actual useful skills. 17/hr is not a living wage in 2025.

I know vastly less about construction than I do about taking things apart and fixing them. Any time I try building something, it comes out like shit.
As for the wage, I live in a shitty apartment with low rent and don't drink, smoke, or do drugs and my car is paid off, so my expenses are pretty low. I've gotten by in this place making less than that.

Came to this conversation late, but… yeah, automotive is like the worst trade to get into.
Diesel or any off-road equipment is way fucking better. Pluming, electrical, HVAC are all real straight especially if you get in the union. I’m playing mechanic right now at a water plant and it has been fun because it’s everything from the air conditioner in the office building to pickup trucks we use for towing and parts to a starter on a yard dog that moves trailers around the plant. Also a while lot of 460V 3 phase electrical motors and panels.

fall down from the cowl above. they design it this way on purpose, the leaves rot, trap moisture and rot through the car right at that structural spot requiring (you) to buy a new car.
clean it well, hit it with some rust converter and coat liberally with fluid film.
i take the inner fenders off my cars every other year and do this when i'm fluid filming. the result is all my cars are 100% rust free despite living in the heart of the rust belt

That’s what I did a couple months ago, and now I’m not a diesel mechanic.
That was one of a few jobs where I’m like “I can’t believe they offered me that job” but I took the one with a better schedule and less rainbow flags in the breakroom.

Having a CDL is nice if you want to go for a diesel mechanic gig too. At least for on-road diesel mechanic.
The Waste Management job I was offered… which I still feel bad about not taking because I liked the bros in the office but the company felt like Bepis+ with layers of office politics and woke bullshit and no holidays for frontline workers…
Anyway I went in there like “Listen, I pre-tripped my tractor trailer every day for 11 years at my last job, I know how to run a grease gun and PowerProbe, and I do automotive repairs on the weekends a bit.”
Also one of their old mechanics came to Pepsi and we were talking about how Carlos was a good dude and that probably helped.
So look for that stuff. It was “Assistant Diesl Tech” so those are the guys doing greasing PMs and oil samples and probably light bulbs and shit. It was $21/hr to start with 50+ hours a week, so there was a little bit of money to be made. And a company that big has deals with CAT and Cummins and all those companies to get trained and certified on their stuff and roll that into pay raises and a better resumé to go make $30/hr+. That was my goal if I were going to take that job.

why are people buying cars so above their budget? specially when they may only use them 30-90 minutes a day to commute

Because it ain't 1940 anymore and all the "automotive" machine shops rely on industrial customers far more than any automotive work so they do a shitty job on the auto stuff. Sure, they can probably plane a head reasonably well for a grocery getter, and maybe do a single-angle valve job that has a decently concentric seat with almost all of the stem heights similar but they'll rush the boring bar and crank lathe leaving surfaces rough as hell and out-of-round. Then they'll have the least-paid guy assemble it and he won't check a damn thing because no one above him wants to hear it, they just want the job done and out the door because the customer will never know he got fucked so why do more?
Now, if you wanted to pay race engine money for an engine from a racing-oriented shop then you might get something but that's way more than a crate engine.

What would cause an engine to blow blue smoke on startup, but at seemingly random intervals? I have a 4.6 2v with nearly 350k, all original aside from a timing job about 70k ago, and this just started happening roughly a year ago. When it first started it would do it at least once a day nearly every day so I and most forum posts I found figured it was possibly valve seals, but I didn't have time to take care of it so I just lived with it and checked my oil every three or four days for probably three or four months. Then it just stopped doing it completely out of the blue for another 6 or 7 months leaving me puzzled but happy. Now it's started doing it again, but randomly. Sometimes it will do it everyday for a couple weeks, sometimes it'll do it once every couple weeks, sometimes during cold starts sometimes during hot sometimes either, etc etc. there seems to be no rhyme or reason to it making nailing down an exact cause pretty much impossible short of parts cannon and hope for the best which I try to avoid.

If the motor was maintained well, then all you have to do is worry about the transmission and body, both of which are known to fail. If the motor wasn't maintained well, you won't even be able to remove your spark plugs, and of course you'll also need a new motor. Those triton motors are very sensitive to missed oil changes. If the previous owner failed to change the oil often, then the motor is going to be fucked. Overall, these vans have a lot of issues, and I'm a Ford fan. My dad had one of those and it was the biggest pile of crap. You get what you pay for with that van. I'll end on a positive note by saying it drives well.

it stops moisture getting onto the back of the door card/panel and encouraging mould and mildew growth. it's just a plastic sheet so you can get builder's plastic at a hardware store or something for dirt cheap, then butyl tape to stick it on, and cut off the excess.
there's usually a slot along the bottom - you feed the sheet into it then tape it up so that any droplets that form on the inside will fall down into the door skin and out the drainage holes, rather than into the door panel and growing mould.

I took a look and it's not something you just pop back on by hitting it, the little clip pops into one piece but it's supposed to be slid into the outer piece first so you can't just slap it on. I doubt anything's broken, maybe some retard took it off to clean the water drains or who knows what.
you think the dealer will fuck me on this one? Just to take it off and reattach it? Was gonna ask when I get an oil change. I feel like a body shop would fuck me less but they're busy with work that's actually worth their time so idk. It just sets off my autism seeing the slightest gap because one of the clips isn't attached correctly.

Couple questions about jacking up my car:
1: how can I pick up the whole front/back end without having my car move? I've picked up one side into stands, then jacked up the other side, but it's slid a little on the stands. Is it best to use two jacks at once and pick each side up a bit at a time?
2: How to jack my car up when I don't have smooth concrete? My jack has pulled the car over instead of pulling itself under. I have some ~1/2" thick HDPE sheets. Can I put my jack on those?

You jack it up from the centre, usually on the subframe/chassis and/or the rear diff. Side to side is entirely possible, obviously, but you'll always have unwanted movement, even with a perfectly level and smooth surface. If your jack is too short or tall to get under the car, drive whatever end you're trying to jack up onto some blocks first so you have better clearance underneath.

I have no experience with, nor have I ever owned a subaru, however;
Upon googling for wiring diagrams, I found something you can check. I have no idea if this is even correct, but it's something
I have circled and squared components in this diagram.
The circle is a diode. If the it has failed, it would allow power from the brake warning circuit to *also* illuminate the charge warning light. It's a long shot, as it can disproven by confirming operation of the parking brake light.
The squared component is a relay. Essentially, when the generator is engaged, that relay is supposed to open, preventing the light from illuminating. If that relay is inoperable, the light will always be on when the key is on. This sounds more likely to me. Where that relay is beyond me, however. And again, I'm not even sure this is correct, this just *appears* to be the cluster diagram for a 98 imprezza.

i like my car but this does feel like a ticking time bomb. i just put new rotors and pads on and every time i spend money on it i can't help but feel the sword hanging over me.
do you think i ought to get rid of this car? i mean it seems logical to me because that's a lot of the value of it in one repair. is it hard to sell a car? this is all pretty new to me.

Standing starts are the hardest part, and you are absolutely guaranteed to kill the car repeatedly while figuring it out. You just need a wide open lot to practice for a bit.
Get the car moving in first, stop, repeat.
Ezpz after that (minus the stress and yips incurred at intersections; avoid those initially - practice standing stops off the road first)

Need to finance a car (and by need, i mean car i had is beyond salvaging, busted frame and too rotted to weld), just yolo'd paying off debt, so dont have the money to buy anything running in cash, local dealership has an '06 4 runner with 200k for 7500, limited trim, beautiful condition body, and good frame, with the 4.7, is this a good buy? i know toyotas are generally really reliable and long lived, but the mileage makes me nervous even if it seems in good condition. would only be financing for 24 months max (and only because paying off faster than that tends to be bad for your credit). pic is same model/trim, but one im looking at is black.
Bought a used 2017 Grand Cherokee in 2021 with 30k miles, currently have 68k miles. Carfax was clean, no accidents, dents and everything worked. Changed oil regularly and did basic maintenance. Few months ago the car suddenly started overheating while I was driving back home. Check Engine light came on and the temp was going up and down. Drove it to the closest auto store and noticed my coolant was empty, which it shouldn't have been because I just got it topped up a few months prior to that. Let the car cool down for about 45 minutes, put more coolant in and the Check Engine light went away and didn't have any problems for another 4 months until...
Suddenly the car is overheating again. Same thing, went to the store, bought more coolant and the car was "fine". A week goes by and once again the car is overheating. Coolant is empty. Okay, obviously I have a coolant leak. I get it to the stealership and they do some diagnostics and tell me I more than likely have a Blown Head Gasket and need to replace everything, which would easily cost 12k+. I said I'm going to get a second opinion, especially after they tried fucking me over on the costs of the diagnostics.
Got it to a shop that specializes in this specific issue and they did their own tests and told me it is definitely a Blown Head Gasket and that it's just the top half. Their quote was $10k but no more than $12k. They apparently have the machining in house as they specialize in this kind of work.
Surely, there is no way it cost this much to fix this issue. I live in Hawaii if that has anything to do with the prices.
Another issue is that I still own $9k on the car.

I’ve driven some old trucks with fuses you can reset.
What other people said about cost. Fuses are super reliable and basic. Also when you’re talking about a house, you can trip a breaker plugging too many things into a certain set of outlets. That’s sort of a normal fault where you can safely put the vacuum cleaner or toaster on a different outlet and reset the breaker. Meanwhile everything in a car is perma-wired except the damn 12V outlet. If you’re blowing a fuse, you need to go diagnose the issue and fix it. Resetting a breaker on a faulted hardwired circuit is going to lead to a trip real soon or other issues. You rarely blow fuses in cars for a one time overload event.

Well, there was coolant in the spark plug area, so it's definitely fucked regardless.
What are my options at this point?
