>the feeling of community and belonging and we are taught to be compassionate
So you do it for a good feeling. If you won't do it, your community would expel you. And that would cause a bad feeling. Feeling of being alone, rejected, unaccepted.
It's an egoist motive.
Every religion on this planet is based on the same principle. Do good, get reward, from your community, from your Gods.

You’ll find that most animals don’t care whether humans call them herbivores or carnivores. Animals are opportunistic and will eat whatever is available; deer, cows, and pandas are nominally herbivorous, but will not turn away from a baby bird if it’s sitting right there and they are deficient in calcium, proteins, or other nutrients available in it.
This isn’t just accidentally biting into an animal while grazing, either, herbivores are documented to actively seek out small animals. Not very often, of course, since they are better adapted to digesting plants, but it does happen. Similarly, nominal carnivores will eat plants and grass to deal with digestive issues or micronutrient deficiencies on occasion.
The upshot is, animals don’t give a fuck. They’re not abstaining from meat/plants out of loyalty to the honor of their varna, they just eat what’s easy to eat and satisfies their cravings.

Exactly what other body shape would have the dexterity to create intricate industrial tools and machines while also being able to type inputs on an interface? We are also surprisingly compact creatures, we are thin and tall and able to bend and squirm into places.
Homo-Sapiens literally evolved to grab things and use tools. You can have all the brainpower but it's useless if you don't have the body to make and use things.
Being bipedal and having hands is a requirement for civilization. Without either one your lucky to make a spear let alone a spaceship.
