Control abyss wants a more powerful finisher to actually close out games. Abyss may very well receive that since the livestream will have Ginsetsu's voice actor as a guest, and a new ginsestsu card may fit that bill. Ginsetsu's previous incarnations have been similar to Amalia in that she's a decently sized body that hides behind a ward spam board that she brings with her onto the field. It's not instant damage from hand, but she historically can frustrate opposition's ability to score lethal while also being a hard to remove before she can swing face.
Aggro abyss wants payoff to the self damage effects so that they get a power spike going into the midgame that they can potentially leverage for an eark. Historically that is provided by stuff with the "wrath" mechanic. Also look at "Flauros" to get another example of something that would give aggro abyss an early power spike. It's unclear if that will arrive in the second set. Speculation is that the Omens will return with the third set, and wrath was the flagship mechanic behind Valnareik Omen of Lust.
Both control and aggro will benefit from more "sticky followers" similar to bonermancer that break apart into different followers upon death. That sort of follower makes it easier to maintain board presence, and synergize immensely with Cerberus.

I think that they wanted to sunset the "vengeance" mechanic. They wanted a faster format, and it looks bad for a craft to have a flagship mechanic that does nothing until you are essentially in one shot range. Mechanically they are related in that blood and shadow embody different facets of mtg's black slice of the color pie, and thematically they both share and underworld/demon/undead themes. So rather than look silly having a craft with a DOA core mechanic, they just fully merged blood and shadow.
As for why abyss is so mid right now, I would bet money that these first two sets were designed as one big set and that some retard came along and haphazardly split them in half. For example, abyss blatantly has wrath enabler cards right now but no wrath cards as payoff. Likewise dragon has some vestiges of its discard theme, but not enough to do anything with it. Portal and rune were the lucky cunts who lucked it having fully cohesive decklists in this initial set.

I've healed 12 points of hp this match between cerb, ceres, and Olivia. Puppets HATE that one simple trick.

Sapphire, it is fantastic if you're going first but weak if going second.

>playing midrange abyss with skews to aggro
>losing slightly more often than winning
>drops Beryl and other aggro options in favor of pure control
>can't stop winning now
It isn't as fun, but wth why is there such a world of difference playing defensively versus offensively for this craft? I feel like I was gaslit.

It's so shit that I had to stop playing it. I was hard stuck in topaz with it. I genuinely want to know what was going through their minds when they made it so gimped.
